Academics is 1A.

And if you have any questions about it, do the math! :D

Way more academic money offered to the class of 2012 than athletic. It's not even close. Yeah football's big time, but overall the school and community take more pride in the academic stature of the school system. You can argue it if you want, but as a long time resident of Ft. Thomas, I'd be interested to hear from another resident that thinks I'm off here.

If they truly wanted to bleed blue, they would have moved to Ft. Thomas right? Valid point though.

As some folks on here know, you get more bang for your home purchase buck if you buy outside FT. For the most part, the lots in FT are very small and the homes are old yet priced pretty high. So if you can buy nearby and get more house for the $ but send your kids to the FT district and pay tuition, it's a viable choice for many. If it looks like the door is going to stay closed for a while, it wouldn't surprise me if some that purchased in Wilder, Cold Spring, etc. will be looking for homes in FT this summer or the near future.

Ru, I have to agree with MCrunch. You see the football perspective and yeah we take it very seriously. But in all honesty, the academics are a bigger deal. It's a definite and clear number 1 priority. Football is second.

I have no actual facts to base this on, but I would suggest that this is the case at almost any high school in the country. Obviously there could be exceptions to the rule, such as Findley Prep or Oak Hill Academy.

After reading the notice again, it looks like they will have tuition students for next year, they just will accept no more than they already have?

mcrunch and lneck,

mcrunch used high school math (see below) to make his case for academics and challenged us to do the math:

31 Commonwealth Diplomas handed out Sunday at HHS 2012 graduation. The state avg is 3%. Do the math. Academics is #1 at Highlands

===============================

Since he used a high school percentage I challenge anyone to use the state championships won by Highlands in football vs. other schools in their class and do the math. Of course, no need to waste anyone's time, using mcrunch's own example football wins by doing the math.

Now that even mcrunch knows he was beat, he, along with you, want to use college academic money offered as the measuring stick instead of Commonwealth Diplomas...

As someone pointed out to me this could as a result of less and less Ft T parents sending their kids to NC.

Well, there are less and less #s in all the Catholic grade schools in Campbell County. I'd say St. Thomas and St. Catherine have taken alot of hits in #s the past years. They've had to combine sports teams in every category.

But their only rival in championships for football would be Trinity and we all know that they have a great academic reputation as well. I think it's two things, the school administration from coaches to teachers etc all take sports and academics very serious. With that said the parents that go out of their way to get their kids in at Highlands do so knowing that if nothing else they will get a great education, perhaps little johnny becomes a great athlete and get's a scholarship but if not they're not putting their child in a situation where they have to focus only on a sport in order to help better his future.

And just so the Highlands faithful don't crucify me, the school is also blessed with a comunity backing that simply can't be matched. :D

Hopefully, I'm reading you right and you're just being sarcastic. Because it would be foolish for anyone to even consider that an extracurricular activity would be the most important aspect of an education -- in Ft. Thomas or anywhare else.

I got married this year and my wife has two little ones. We currently live in Ohio but plan to go to NKY in the next 5 years. I have already taken her to Ft. Thomas and did my best sales job. However, let's say for a 200k house you get something a little "nicer" in Union, she said, which I struggled to debate. Ryle isn't too far off academically either. HOWEVER, if we have a boy I have a verbal agreement to get at least a condo in Ft. Thomas!

For those that are not aware, the Governor's Cup is the an academic competition where the top students at each school compete in several subject by taking written test in a number of subjects, plus team competitions in quick recall and future problem solving.

We have had countless debates on this site about reasons for Highlands success on the football field even against schools that are considerablly larger. We are told about the tradition, community support, summer work ethic, etc.

So my question, with no disrespect meant, is if academics are the primary focus of the school and their supporters than why do have they had mediocre results at the district level in academic competitions while at the same time they have almost unmatched success in football at the state level, and even receive national recognition.

This debate if for a separate thread but if you are going to compare housing in the Ryle school district vs. housing in Fort Thomas you have zero chance JA. You better pick another battle.

That's a good question considering how top level the school system is in academic accomplishments such as state scores, ACT scores and students moving on to and succeeding in college. However, please keep in mind that we do receive national recognition for the entire school system, not just football. I know at least 3 of our 5 schools have been recognized as a Blue Ribbon school.

Unless the entire student body participates in the GovCup and/or unless it's mandatory that the top students participate then using it as a basis for how well a school does academically is simply a waste of time and brain cells.
