Unless the entire student body participates in the GovCup and/or unless it's mandatory that the top students participate then using it as a basis for how well a school does academically is simply a waste of time and brain cells.

You could make the same argument about football. It's not mandatory that the top athletes in the school participate.

Participation in the Governors Cup is not mandatory, however, my experience at least in the Daviess Co. / Owensboro area in the early 90's was that the majority of the schools best students did choose to represent their school. Just seems like a school with an above average number of Commonwealth's Diplomas awarded would have better results than they have had.

Yes, but I wasnt taking total yardage gained by the JV in one quarter and trying to say one school's varsity football team is better than another.

You are if you are using GovCup results.

Agree Clyde there are kids at Highlands who are National Merit finalist who are simply not interested in participating in academic competitions. Whatever floats your boat I guess. Some kids thrive in those environments and others check their high IQ at the door and go on their way. Kudos to the Camel squad though. I know one young man out there who is extremely bright and has smoked the ACT.

I couldn't bring up the link for the Governor's cup but based on those results, I sure wouldn't send my kid to Cov Cath, New Cath or Beechwood. They are not even in the top 5.

 Yeah, I wouldn't go for those schools either - they're terrible. Academically speaking, I don't think I'd want my kids going to Cov Lat either...I mean, they couldn't even crack the top five for their district's Governer's Cup standings. They must provide a pitiful education there.

For what its worth. A lady who works for my wife told her yesterday that they just enrolled her son at Highlands. He will be a freshmen this fall. And he is on the football team. They live in Hebron and are not moving.

My guess is that this family had already started the process so Highlands had accounted for him.

The mother also said the main reason they were sending him was not for football. She is a teacher in Boone County.

So is she saying "I and my colleagues do not do a satisfactory job?"

Thats not really fair Clyde, if mom is an elementary teacher, she has no control over what the High School Teachers do.

It's a fair question that may have a legit response.

If the kid is a strong student he will get a strong education in Boone County.

Just saw a publication last night where HHS was ranked two hundred and something in one national rating of high schools and one hundred and twenty something in another. Pretty strong.
