Obviously you want to save your best reliever for as late in the game as possible, because each pitch/AB becomes more crucial. Rivera was obviously their go to guy in the 9th, and frequently in the 8th inning. Unless you're going to use Rivera for 3 innings, then I think you have your answer... How is that my answer? The answer is in the bolded, and that's what spindoc and I have been arguing.
May 23, 201214 yr Where are these holes at the back of the Reds pen??? Don't have any right now with Chapman out there. If Leake would have continued struggling he would have been moved into the rotation IMO.

Even funnier that they're comparing a Yankees organization that has been willing to outspend and overpay guys for over a decade to fill holes. The Reds don't have that luxury. We are comparing situations. You guys think Chapman should be used 7th, 8th or 9th because he's the best reliever. Mo was the Yankees best reliever. Thus the comparison.
May 23, 201214 yr How do you know the toughest spot will be in the 7th? What if the same spot comes back around in the 9th and you've already used your best reliever? I'm not at all saying I know when the toughest spot will be. I'm saying that if he's only used to start the 9th inning it isn't the best way to use him. Especially if they plan on starting him at all this year.

Arredondo, the Big O and Marshall are better than anyone the Yankees have at the back end of their pen right now...Even before the injuries you don't lose much with Arredondo, O and Marshall over the Yankees Chamberlain, Soriano and Robertson...The Reds set up guys have been proven to be just as effective as the Yankees at a fraction of the costs, nothing wrong with that...

He's the all time best relief pitcher in baseball. He wasn't used exclusively to come in and get 3 outs in the 9th. Early in his career he pitched multiple innings in front of Wetteland. If Dusty uses Champan in the 8th some and leaves him in to finish the 9th I'll completely change my argument here. I don't feel that will happen. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't feel that will happen. I hope I'm wrong. We are talking about Dusty here so it's anyone's guess, but there is no reason he can't be used to get 4, 5, or even 6 outs to get a save. Chapman has been pretty pitch efficient most games this year.
