By naming him the closer, you can't have that with Chapman. So Torre was an idiot for using Rivera in the 9th, and some in the 8th and 9th, but never the 7th when he became closer?

You can lock down the 7th and 8th and still lose in the 9th...I'll take my chances in the other guys locking down the 7th and 8th that's why they are on the ML roster and the best pitcher with the best stuff locking down the 9th...It does no good if Chapman saves the Reds in the 7th and 8th if someone comes in and blows the game in the 9th, even if they save the game in the 9th and its nerve wrecking high stress inning that's not what you wan't... Chapman will blow a game or two sure, but he is the surefire bet too be the Closer of this team and the one that most people would be most confident in...Chapman closing the 9th is like a game ending touchdown or 3 pointer, the crowd goes nuts! Triple digits on the gun, 1-2-3 sit down! I love it!...It really gives the fans, and the team, a brisk feeling towards the end of the game instead of, okay, let's see how difficult this victory is going to be to maintain like in years past and at times this year...I like the change, especially since the reds rotation has been pretty solid...Chapman gives everyone a reason to stay till the end.

Umm, you really think they are taking into account who gets the "fans fired up" into account? :lol: It's much easier to get three outs with no one on base to protect a 1-run lead than it is to get two outs with 1st and 3rd and protect a 1-run lead, even you'll agree with that, won't you?

May 23, 201214 yr My only real issue is that I think he should be starting. Now since we know that isn't going to happen for right now I guess having him in the closer role is a good spot. Hopefully that doesn't mean Dusty will wait strictly till the 9th to bring him in if there is a jam in the 8th. I'd love to have him available at anytime but other guys have to do their job in the pen at some point as well. He can't pitch out of every single tight spot. I'd take him over any pitcher in baseball for 1 inning.

I do agree, however many teams have late inning set up guys for this role as do the Reds...But most teams only have one closer, the guy that everyone is confident in, fans, player,coaches and front office personnel...This guy usually throws smoke and is an intimidation factor and one of the most popular guys on a team...Aroldis Chapman is the hardest throwing Lefty since the Big-Unit he puts fear into an opponent... The 9th is your last chance it does no good to save the innings prior if you don't have an ideal guy to lock down the game in the 9th...If you are at Home you lock the 9th down game over, if you consistently put guys on and make it interesting or blow the game you kill the teams mojo and it's hard to come back with only 3 out left and the other teams closer in the game...If your on the Road you don't want a guy in that can give up a walk off...How many HR's has Chappy even given up? It can't be many... I'm confident in the other guys getting the game to Chapman in the 9th and I don't know what else I can say about the way I feel...The more you come back with stuff the more idiotic you rub off on me in trying to prove my point...
