May 23, 201214 yr Chapman is a horse, just look at his physique and frame, he was built and managed his whole life to be a SP...I think he will be fine Closing games not 2 days in a row, he will be fine closing 3 or 4 games in a row if there even are that many consecutive games with save situations...The reality is not every day is a save situation so he is guaranteed to get rest...If a game is a save situation that means it is probably tight as well in the 7th and 8th where some of you would rather pitch, however he can't pitch everyday...What happens when there are 3 or 4 tight games in a row with runners on in the 7th and the 8th, some of you say he can't close everyday well he can't pitch every day in the 7th and 8th either then...This is why the Reds have a pen and one of the best at that...I personally have more faith in the Reds pen than I ever have and Chapman isn't the savior that was going to pitch every game when it's a tight situation and Dusty needs some one to bail them out... The other guys will blow their chances during the 7th and 8th, it happens with every team...However they are very good and are better than the league average so all is good...I wan't Chapman entering the 9th with no outs, no runners on and a clean slate to work with...I wan't opposing teams to know going into every game that they aren't going to get runs in the 9th in a close game...Chapman can have a slight psychological effect on the 7th and 8th innings even if he is only pitching in the 9th, hitters will press in the 7th and 8th against very good pitchers at that to try to get runs knowing that nothing is crossing the plate in the 9th...He will get used to closing and he will have no problem going every-time there is a save situation...In my mind it really did no good having a lefty specialists that you were saving for a save situation where he might have to pitch against all righties and the meat of the order where he is prone to get hammered, that isn't Marshall's role... It also did no good having basically 3 guys in Chapman, Big O and Arredondo that were all in set up Roles...There is now defined roles for everyone, Lecure and Simon are long men and are going to pitch in blowouts and may get an increased important role in the case the pen is spent...The Big O and Arredondo are your set up men and Marshall is your lefty specialists with Chapman closing...I love it...Nasty boys version 2.0...

May 23, 201214 yr ^It's ignorant because the game isn't over. If they really felt that way they wouldn't even send hitters up. Rivera has blown saves, hasn't he? How's that possible if the game "was over"? They have to send their hitters up there, but have you watched Chapman this year? I think opponents are hitting like .075 against him and he has hardly walked anyone this year and even when he does he can strike out the side...Some of the best opponents have looked ridiculous it's unfair... Realistically Chapman could pitch 1 crucial last out in the 8th in 3,4 or 5 pitches and come back in the 9th for about a 12 pitch inning...That's about how many pitches it takes most closer's to get out of just the 9th if not many more, 25+ in some cases...Hitters are flat out guessing at the dish Chapman can throw a mistake pitch and it don't matter they chase...He will only get better and stronger the more he closes and gets used to the consecutive days... He also just has that aura about him, he looks to be past the command issues and seems like he will be even more nasty coming out in 9th to lock the game down...Chapman could come in when he may be a little gassed and throw nothing but Slide Pieces with the occasional fastball and still be effective...He doesn't have to throw 98+ to be effective...Some days he may throw all cheese like he did last night, the next night it could be sliders with high cheese to put them away...Chapman at 75% is still flat out nasty...His intimidation factor alone gets even the best hitters to go away from their game plan...

It would be nice to read/comment about the series with the Braves instead of 100 posts debating Marshall vs. Chapman. Just saying.

Assuming he stays the closer all year, if he blows a save you stay out of the Reds threads the remainder of the season, and if he's perfect (as you guys suggest), I'll stay out of the Reds threads all next season.

We get a bit carried away some times but you are probably right, if it happens is a different story . I think it already might have its own thread though.

May 23, 201214 yr ^:lol: What can I say LRCW, you've taught me well... Seriously though, it seems pretty common sense to me that you'd rather have your best, most effective reliever available for the most important crucial outs of a game. By naming him the closer, you can't have that with Chapman.
