Last night, the 9th inning was the best time to use him. Doesn't mean it's still incredibly stupid to pigeon-hole him into the 9th inning when that's rarely when the most important outs of a ballgame are recorded.

Well, you're wrong. It's as simple as that. No reason to ever start to monitor the save stat in that case. Never should have been a fireman of the year award. So many baseball minds over the years have gotten it totally wrong. Yep, the ninth is no big deal. Managers hold their cards to make moves to win games in the 9th. And no one ever said he has to pitch only in the 9th. You keep saying that when it doesn't have to be that way at all. And it was you who said that we were simply discounting Marshall as a quality closer. How's that looking? He wasn't brought in to be the closer, and he will never thrive as one long term.

I love seeing Chapman closing games...It is very exciting for me as a fan to know that Chapman and is electric stuff is going to come in too slam the door...He is the only Pitcher on the staff that can come in and close games without making me nervous...He is the only pitcher on the staff that can make mistakes and get away with it...With Marshall all it took was one base hit and a walk and I was worried about him giving up a 3 run jack, I don't get that feeling with Chapman...The Big O, Arredondo, Hoover and Marshall can patrol the 6,7 and 8th innings in the close games...Did anyone else see the electricity in the crowd last night when Chapman was locking it down? Fans will pay to see that, I know his other role was very important and he flourished in it but the other pitchers the Reds have can handle their own...Chapman was paid big money to be a SP if he isn't going to start you might as well consider it closer type money and have yourself what could be and probably is the best closer in the game now...He is going to be very effective in this role...Just because he is the closer doesn't mean that he won't pitch the last out of the 8th as well or possibly both the 8th and 9th innings...

Yeah, he pretty much does have to pitch only the 9th. Anymore than that and he's not going to be available the next day. Can't have a closer who can't pitch back-to-back days.

 

Chapman isn't going to be a closer long-term either. Rest of this year? Looking like it, but next season he's back to being slated for the rotation, because that's where EVERYONE knows he belongs. Marshall would be fine in the closer role (if they have to name one specficially) for this season, although they have about 4 guys (Marshall, Chapman, Big O, Arrendondo) who can all be very effective nailing down the 9th depending on the situation.

No one has scratched against Chapman. And opponents know it. And that makes him even more effective when the last call is answered. It's okay to be wrong. The first step is admitting it.

 

I agree with him being a starter. And I hope our pen and starting situation allows it. But if it doesn't, he's a lights out closer. EVERYONE knows it. And I thought last week he looked good back to back games even though you say he can't. As for the other 4 you named, I think they're setup guys and agree that they can fill the closer role when Chapman is "unavailable".

The save stat is by far the most over rated stat in baseball history. The percentage of times a team wins a game going to the 9th inning with the lead is almost exactly the same as it was 100 years ago. It has never changed by more than like 1 or 1.5%. A guy that worked for a newspaper created the stat. I would assume some relievers and agents are very happy with that guy. Look no further than the TB Rays for proof that it's over rated. They just keep replacing closers year after year and they keep winning at a great clip in that division with the big spenders that have had Papelbon and Rivera. Rivera is really the exception to the rule.

If it wasn't for Madson getting injured Chapman would probably be starting...Since Madson is hurt Chapman is that big name electric stuff type pitcher that can come in and replace him...Opposing teams do not wan't to see Chapman in the 9th when they are down to their last chances, Marshall is one that doesn't strike fear into the opponent...Marshall is a lefty specialists and there is nothing wrong with that...Most teams have their best RP pitcher closing, what makes the Reds any different? And the Reds have a luxury not many teams have in that the Big O and Arredondo are both perfect set up men and can both be counted on in either the 7th or 8th Innings...I like knowing that Chapman has a defined role now and Marshall the Big O and Arredondo do as well...I like knowing that Chapman is going to come in with a 1 or 2 run lead and a clean slate to work with and the Adrenaline pumping, it's scary...He is the nasty boy that every batter fears and almost every batter looks lost against...

As far as the bolded goes, you said he doesn't have to pitch just the 9th inning. And that couldn't be more wrong. If he threw the 8th and 9th inning in a game, there is no way he'd be used the next day. None. You can't have a closer that isn't available two straight days, and yet here you are wanting Chapman to be used for two inning saves. Makes zero sense.

Marshall comes in and does hopefully what his job is and that's to get lefties out, if he does this there is now 2 outs...Dusty then walks out and insert either Arredondo or the Big O it doesn't matter as they are interchangeable, If they do there job you are out of the inning...The next inning either Arredondo or the Big O can pitch that inning as well or you can put in the one that didn't get the last out the inning before...Chapman then enters in the 9th and slams the door...Why does Chapman have to be the one to close the door in the 7th? Isn't this why you have a bullpen that consist of more than just Chapman, those other guys can be counted on as well and they have proven it...What happens when you waste Chapman in that 7th Inning and then it's the 9th and you still have only a 1 run cushion? Can you really say you wouldn't want Chapman available to seal the W?
