Maybe b/c the Yankees had the highest or one of the highest payrolls forever and they go pay other teams ex closers huge money to pitch those innings.

 

Maybe b/c they had enough money to not need to find a way to get their best pitcher more innings as a starter like the Reds seemingly intend to do with Chapman.

 

Maybe b/c if a starter for the Reds go down anytime soon the most likely replacement is Chapman and they might start working on extending him where the Yankees would most likely have just replaced said starter with a trade.

I think Rivera was used a lot in the 8th inning especially in the playoffs when games mattered a lot more to the Yankees than regular season games because their roster could make up for a few losses in the regular season. Also I did say they pay really good guys pretty big money to pitch the 7th and 8th inning. ie...Rafael Soriano 3 years $35M

From 05-09 Mo lead the league by a wide margin in saves of more than 1 inning. He has like 116 for his career.

Cincinnati has the best bullpen in the league. Does it really matter when Chapman pitches? I have just as much confidence in Arredondo and Ondrusek as I do in Chapman.

And he's not going to pitch the 7th, 8th and 9th, so there's your answer.

 

Obviously you want to save your best reliever for as late in the game as possible, because each pitch/AB becomes more crucial. Rivera was obviously their go to guy in the 9th, and frequently in the 8th inning. Unless you're going to use Rivera for 3 innings, then I think you have your answer...

I love that people are comparing Mo Rivera and Chapman. Even funnier that they're comparing a Yankees organization that has been willing to outspend and overpay guys for over a decade to fill holes. The Reds don't have that luxury.

No. That's my point. I think he's their best so I'd use him in the toughest spot. I'm cool with anyone you named getting the last 3 outs or Chapman getting them if it's the right time to use him.

Of Chapman’s 17 appearances, he has gone more than one inning in more than a third of them (and again, has been very effective each time). This isn't something he is going to be asked to do every closing situation but he will be fine if this is asked of him. I have seen no signs that he cant recover and pitch effectively whenever asked upon...He doesn't have the innings or experience of MO however I don't know why Chapman wouldn't be able to still go multiple innings when asked too ala MO...We will see with time...He is going to get plenty of rest, not every game is a save situation...When he does come into a save situation I expect him to be very effective...And I have the most confidence in everyone at the back end being in pressure situations in a set up role...

How do you know the toughest spot will be in the 7th? What if the same spot comes back around in the 9th and you've already used your best reliever?
