May 23, 201214 yr Dusty hasn't had a problem using him prior to the switch to closer for multiple innings...He is probably going to pitch in the same games now as he would have as a set up man only at the back end where you have no cushion at all too give up a run or two...I don't see the big difference...It's not like he will pitch multiple innings in every save situation but I see no reason he won't be used multiple inning in 1/3 of his save situations like he was being used in a set up role...Not every Save situation calls for multiple innings and not every tight spot in the 7th or 8th calls for the use of Chapman...For many that don't know Marshall thrived in these same situations in Chicago and will as well in Cincy, he never looked comfortable at the very end of the game...This is what he was signed for... I am fine with him being the "closer" as long as that means he is used in the 8th too if the situation warrants it. I don't think we'll see that though.

Why is everyone ignoring that teams win almost the exact percentage of games now that they did the last 100+ years when leading going into the 9th inning? Can we please start comparing the Reds to someone like say the Rays that don't have the payroll of the Yankees? I want the Reds to follow their path not the Yankees Rodney has 14 saves that's all but 2 for the Rays...He has only pitched more than 1 inning 2 times and 3 of his outings have been less than 1 inning...I don't understand the argument...How is he any different than Chapman as the designated closer?

And he's their 5th closer in 5 years. The Rays would have left Chapman as a starter since that's the Reds ultimate plan and figured out the bullpen with their other parts. Closing a game out in the 9th inning is totally and completely over-rated. Smart organizations see that.

If Dusty doesn't need too he won't, with the other guys the Reds have there is a good chance that he won't need too...I don't like Dusty at all but if he needs Chapman for 1.1 or 1.2 Innings I'm sure he will use him, he has thus far...

Rodney pitches at the end because he is their best pitcher he has always been good and has experience closing...You are right in that they don't overspend on closers however they also don't go out and sign Todd Coffey and make him their closer because he can throw hard...They understand the importance of closing out a game or else Rodney who is their best relief pitcher would pitch earlier in the game in tight spots, just like the MO argument...Just because they don't put a high price tag on a closer and choose to save or spend elsewhere doesn't mean that they don't use their best pitcher in the closer role... They signed Farnsworth to close and he got hurt so they then plugged their next best relief pitcher into that spot, it's not all that different than the Reds and Chapman...Marshall was not the Reds second best pitcher other than Madson, Chapman had all the potential and Marshall has had a solid career with his manager picking his spots which is where he will be at again now...The Reds are doing this out of necessity just as the Rays put Rodney in the closers spot out of necessity...The Rays haven't had a closer by committee since 2009...
May 23, 201214 yr If the Reds use Chapman as a closer after this year I will be upset if he doesn't at least get a cup of coffee as a major league starter first...For now I don't really care although I do think the Reds will become a better team with him closing...I feel like it really sets up the rest of the bullpen and gives everyone a more defined role which helps give the pitchers a sense of calmness in knowing what their role is...The only pitcher in the pen with a defined role prior to this year in his career was Marshall, as a closer he was no longer in this role and he now is once again...Everyone else in the pen prior to this year never real had a role or wasn't proven yet to be an effective reliever...I feel like the rest of the pieces are also in place now and the Reds bullpen won't skip a beat, if anything I think everyone enjoys there new role and the pen gets even better if that is possible...

Just pick up a Rays Relief Pitcher, Joe Madden will use anybody to close as the save is the most overrated stat in the game...O wait Madden hasn't gone closer by committee since '09... The way the Yankees keep getting hurt though it wouldn't hurt to predict who might be next in line and pick them up :lol:
