How has he been overused at all this year? He had 4 days rest before today's appearance. I don't think anybody knows what is wrong with him, and I'm equally as sure we'll see the Chapman we saw most of the year in the very near future.

It's really simple. There is a reason they didn't want to use him back to back. My guess is they thought he would get fatigued and not be as sharp. They put him in the closers role and used him 4 times in 5 days and on some back to backs. He has sucked now and my guess is it's because he was used too much.

So your theory is that because when he was used 4 out of 5, and some back to back, (and was dominant during those times) he is sucking now because he's still fatigued from those outings? Doesn't seem very simple to me.

I have no idea. Why did they release Jared Burton? The numbers show he has no problem pitching back to back days, but you still want to throw that out there as being what is wrong with him, despite the numbers showing he has worse numbers when he has several days rest.

I think everyone is trying to over analyze everything, instead of seeing the problem may be rather simple. He's falling behind batters, where earlier in the year he was throwing strikes, and getting ahead of the batters. It's not physical, it's not mental, it's not off the field issues. It's simply a matter of getting ahead of the batters.

 

 

Aroldis Chapman allowed a two-run homer to Josh Willingham in the top of the ninth inning, and the Reds lost 4-3 to Minnesota here today at GABP. Chapman says his back is not an issue, but rather he has been falling behind in the count. Reds manager Dusty Baker agreed:

“You can see he’s throwing 100 … He got behind in Cleveland and you get behind here, guys know you’ve got to come in with a fastball.”

I said this in an earlier thread: Chapman does not have the best mechanics. So far he has went through stretches like this in each of his 3 seasons in the majors. When you throw as hard as he does the least little hiccup in your delivery can cause extreme control problems. I don't think his role has anything to do with it.

Not all all. It was a 3-1 fastball that he grooved to Willingham. Mastorianni and Morneau he stayed ahead in the count and he K'd them both. Mauer just had a great AB.
