If you can't see the things that point to a bullpen guy there's a better chance of convincing BGH to vote for Romney than convincing you to keep him as the closer. I think you can easily make a case to make him a starter as well. Closer is one of the most over rates positions in baseball.

September 17, 201213 yr Coco as a Red had 150 saves and 24 blown saves. 86% Chapman as a Red 36 saves 8 blown saves. 82% (87% this year, just slightly better.) It's just more fun to watch Chapman.

Ironically, guys like Smoltz think a closer is extremely important. I'll take that from a dominate starter and closer. He knew he was more important everyday than once every 5th day.

You could find a number of guys to close games at an 80% clip and it's not much of a drop off. Replace Mike Leake in the rotation and it's a significant upgrade if Chapman pitches to his potential. It's worth the risk IMO. It doesn't work move him back to the pen. Cueto, Latos, Chapman in a 7 game series each going twice. Good luck.

September 17, 201213 yr Looking at the Save % of the top 10 closers this year. Chapman is very average. Listed by total saves 1. Rodney (TB) 96% Johnson (Bal) 93% 3. Soriano (NYY) 93% 4. Perez (CLE) 90% Kimbrel (ATL) 92% 6. Hanrahan 92% Motte 83% Chapman 88% 9. Papelbon 89% 10. Nathan 94% He just did it in such dominating fashion through that long stretch everyone went go go ga ga over him and rightfully so he was nasty.

No doubt about that and I agree with you on that. Shoot even in the games CoCo did save it seemed like he sure liked to make things interesting. Obviously if they move in to starter they will need to find someone else to close. However it could be worth the risk if it works out, especially in the playoffs. I know I am hoping the Reds get it done and win it all this year with the rotation they have and Chapman closing. Which if they do, then I am all for keeping him as a closer.

I mean from all indications he was definitely showing he was built to start and ready to start. Obviously the season is different and maybe it wouldn't have worked but maybe it would have. Maybe he still gets a fatigued arm, or maybe he doesn't. There is a lot of what if's with him starting, but its worth the risk. And as Hammertime said if he doesn't work, then we already know what he can do in the pen.

Too small of a sample size for my liking. Fatigue has set in at 60 innings, that's not a good sign for a starter.
September 17, 201213 yr He won't he warming up each day throwing as hard as he can 3 days in a row sometimes. He will have 4 days to rest after each start.
September 18, 201213 yr He'll be throwing on those off days. Maybe not 100% but they still throw everyday. Not sure how his arm will react to that.
