Besides Mary Chaney there are not many gay people that believe Republicans are much more than homophobes. Many in the gay community believe Obama has not done enough for their civil liberties. And really this was nothing more than just a statement, because he still supports state rights to the issue. I think it was more about putting the finishing bow on an already wrapped gift (segment of his vote which he already had).
May 10, 201214 yr I'm confused. After North Carolina's vote today, and somebody else mentioning that 30 states have now have a similar law...by going out in favor of gay marriage, exactly HOW is this for political gain? I have to believe that there was some serious polling done by President Obama of the undecideds and moderate voters (he would have been stupid not to have done so and President Obama is generally not stupid) and he determined that it would help him attract the White moderate vote. Didn't he vote in favor of gay marriage as an Illinois Senator than conveniently went "undecided" or worse yet "evolving" when he ran for President in 08? I'm pretty sure that's accurate by not positive. If so, I'd be pretty naive to think that he made the move back to in favor of gay marriage without political reasons behind it. Perhaps I could be convinced the decision to now come out in favor of gay marriage was not for political reasons, but it would take some solid convincing. Regardless, this is a winning issue for President Obama in the quest to capture the White moderate votes. According to what I heard on the radio this morning, Whites whom consider themselves moderate are heavily in favor of gay marriage. Confirming what PP92 said earlier, the poll indicated that Blacks are heavily opposed to gay marriage. I have to assume that President Obama is not worried about losing much of the Black vote over this issue.

In all seriousness you have to wonder what kind of role this will play these coming months. I think that might be the other reason for release now since it has been determined who the Republican nominee will be. Many pundits thought it would be until mid-summer before a nominee would emerge. But now on a hot-button issue you have two camps fully formed. One side is for gay marriage. The other side is against it with a plurality of wives. At least that will be the portrayal.

He now said it publicly for strategic reasons.

May 10, 201214 yr I believe it's both. I think he has always supported it in his mind. He now said it publicly for strategic reasons. I've always kind of felt that way. I'd like to see him flip flop on the legalization of marijuana also. I always thought he was for it or not opposed to it but his administration's crackdowns on medicinal marijuana say otherwise.
