Why is Highlands v Cov. Cath. a great rivalry?

Featured Replies

Thanks for clearing that up for the 799th time. I was unsure of how much animosity those noncompetitive games had generated (88 points is a lot of points), but it sounds as if the games aren't being scheduled due to a lack of common open dates more than anything else.

Basically but think about it. If I were Highlands I'd rather play a team like Dixie than Campbell Co lately because Dixie has better numbers and better records most every year. If I were Highlands I'd tend to stay away from Class A teams because in their "above average but not great" years I could get a better game somewhere else and even in their great years I should still win being a 3A team. If I were Highlands I'd schedule non-district games with Ohio teams or teams like St. X because basically I need to play those games in order to know what I need to do to beat CovCath.

I would say that you are not correct about Highlands basketball having trouble beating Cov. Catholic. As was stated previously Highlands has won 16 out of the last 18 in football. The last 12 Highlands vs. Cov. Catholic basketball games it is even 6-6.

You are correct in that you went back to the 97/98 season when HHS went down State in back to back years. However since the 99/00 season CovCath is 6-2 against HHS. While I can't prove it, my educated guess (maybe you can but I have tried finding the information but can't) is that CovCaht has beaten HHS more times than HHS has beaten CovCath since the Basketball series began.

The reason I went back to 1997/98 is because that was the football comparison time wise. I can see if I can get the basketball records. The football all-time records are easier to come by. The basketball series may be close. Highlands has 32 wins in 49 games against Cov. Cath in football. Not exactly close.

Something to keep in mind Da Birdman is the fact that while the win loss record would indicate one thing, the scores of those games would indicate something else: two very evenly matched teams for the most part. This past year is very typical of the games. Yes, the record shows we won, but any one at that game knows it could have gone either way and saw a very good football game between two passionate rivals.

Leatherneck is right, most of the time it is a very competitive game. It is similar to the other comparison mentioned. The OSU vs. Michigan rivalry is much the same. Michigan has a far superior record in that tilt. Michigan is even above .500 playing on the road at Ohio State.

Your info is a little misleading to the modern football fan. UM padded that advantage in the first twenty years of the series in games played from the turn of the century until the twenties. Since then there have been whole decades that the Bucks dominated. I think Woody was 12-6 against Bo and even Earle Bruce sqeaked out a winning record versus Bo. So I would have to say that UM/OSU is a pretty fine example of a rivalry.

Check your facts LSURock, Woody is 4-5-1 against Bo. There is only one decade where OSU dominated, the 60's they had 7 wins. So far OSU has 4 wins in the 2000's, so they have the potential to have their second winning decade in history against Michigan. 2 wins in the 90's, 4 in the 80's, 5 in the 70's, 5 in the 50's, 2 in the 40's, 5 in the 30's, 4 in the 20's. Michigan leads the overall series by 18 games. Michigan is even 5 games over .500 playing at OSU. You would think in most rivalries, you would at least have a winning record at home. I really have no dog in this fight, because I do not like either team. Just giving facts.

Quality of play and programs. Both programs probably feel to be the best in NKY, they have to beat the other program.

Great point LBBC :thumb:

I think it is great to see any school have a great rivalry!!!! It's all apart of the game :thumb:

Wouldn't that win total give the Buckeyes the edge in the 70's? They would be 5-4-1 against Bo and UM. Remember the great tie in ('72?) That was the year that they tied for the Big 10 and the AD's voted OSU the trip to the Rose Bowl.

That means OSU holds the edge in the 60's, 70's and possibly the 00's by the time the decade is finished.

The comment made was domination. You are correct that they were 5-4-1 in the 70s so that would be a winning record. Only one decade of domination. Although looking good for the 2000's. Lloyd may be short for this world if he loses another to the Buckeyes.

Usually a great rivalry has teams that beat each other on a regular basis, where one team does not dominate and games are always in doubt. (Think Michigan/Ohio State) This "rivalry" has none of this. Highlands has dominated this series for years. Cov Cath's previous coach had a record of 2-15 against the Birds during the Mueller years and the new coach is 0-1. So 16 of the last 18 games have been won by the Birds. Why Is this a great rivalry?

Not to split hairs, but Ray beat Mueller 4 times, and the series is I guess then 14 out of the last 18 to Highlands. He beat them twice in 94', once in 97', and once in 01'.

Has the fact that Highlands has had CCH's number the last 10 years diminished this rivalry? Maybe, but this is still the one game a year Highlands circles, so they obviously still see it as a great rivalry.

I think in any sport when a team sees "CovCath" on their jersey, they think of it as "the game". CCH is probably the top program in NKY for all other sports except football, cross-country, and basketball. So the fact the dominant football school is playing the dominant sports school makes this a natural rivalry.

Highlands had basically a 3 year stretch when they won all those games against CCH. Smith, Lorenzen, Herald and company owned CovCath. But if you go back, from like 90'-96', I'm not sure if Highlands even beat CCH one time. And since the previously mentioned trio have graduated, its been all CCH again.

In most years, simply based on size NCC would not be able to compete. This year's NCC team won state in A, and got poleaxed by Cov Catholic 42-0. No disrespect to NCC but they would probably have the same thing happen against Highlands. Therefore I do not think it benefits either team. Campbell County could compete on a size basis, but have been an average football team at best over the last 8 years. They have had one winning season in that time period, this year's 6-4 team. The last times Campbell and Highlands played it was ugly and I remember Highlands scoring 88 on the Camels once. That is not really helpful for either team.

The CovCath-NewCath score was a case of one team playing the worst game of the season and a very good team playing one of their best games of the year. Just one of those games, however, I believe that if they were to play again it would have been much closer. A NewCath Higlands game would have been close as well. Don't base a whole season on one game.

I do not think the rivalry has been diminished at all it is still alive and well. Which was the point of the UM vs. OSU comparison. One team can dominate the other for the series or a period of time and it still retain the flavor. This year it was obvious how much the football game meant to Cov. Catholic. The students made beat Highlands t-shirts, and for good reason, because they arguably had the more experienced team and were playing at home. It was their year to beat the Birds.

They are not dominant in the form of winning state championships in team sports. There are multiple other schools in Northern Kentucky that have won more state titles in the recent past than Covinton Catholic. Last time Cov. Cath won a state title in Cross Country was 1994, Golf was the only other state title I could find in 1984. Brossart, St. Henry, Highlands, Notre Dame, etc. have all won state titles in the last 5 years, with a few of those mentioned in multiple sports.
