Why is Highlands v Cov. Cath. a great rivalry?

Featured Replies

My point was that they have not had many state championships in those sports you mentioned compared to the schools I mentioned. There is no doubt that both schools field very competitve soccer, golf, track, cross country and tennis teams.

How many state championships have Brossart & St. Henry had in their boys' sports?

The only one I can think of is in 2003 St. Henry won the Boys' All "A" State Tournament in basketball, but SOME argue that that is not a "true state championship".

You're correct that they have not had great success winning the state championships, but who in NKY has?

In 2002 I think CCH knocked HHS out of the regional tournament or playoffs in every sport. ;)

I believe they won "region" in everything except basketball? Maybe Cross country too?

It's tough to argue that CCH is not the #1 sports school in NKY; however, Highlands is the #1 football school.

What other sports are you talking about? CCH beat Highlands in basketball in 2002, they are in different classes in track and cross country, different regions in golf and tennis

You said #1 "sports" school in NKY, sports at the other schools are boys and girls. But since you asked for Boys sports and St. Henry and Bishop Brossart I'll give em to you.

The All "A" is not KHSAA sanctioned and is NOT a state championship.

These are a recent few

St. Henry Boys CC: 2004, 2003, 2002

Bishop Brossart Boys CC: 2001, 2000, 1999

Bishop Brossart Boys Track: 2002, 2000

St. Henry Boys Track: 1999, 1996

Bishop Brossart Girls Track: 2002, 2001

St. Henry Girls Track: 2005, 2004

St. Henry Girls CC: 2004, 2003

Highlands Girls CC: 2004, 2003, 2002

Highlands Girls Soccer: 2005

Basketball:

2001: CCH beat HHS @ CCH - Then sophomore Ross Neltner complained about the conditions in CCH's gym, as the cold air caused slippery spots on the floor...

2002: Cov Cath beat Highlands twice, once in the regional semi-finals.

2003: Cov Cath knocked off Highlands @ Highlands...HHS' only regular season loss to a NKY team that year (unless you count Mason County as NKY). The 2 teams matched up in the 1st round of region out at Ryle, and HHS won by 20+.

2004: Cov Cath defeated Highlands handily.

2005: Cov Cath beat HHS in one of the ugliest high school basketball games I've seen in quite some time.

That's off the top of my head, but I think those are right...

Keep in mind HHS won 3 straight regional championships. I think it was 97, 98 and 99 and then again in 2001.

Under Shields and Messmer since 1976 HHS has won 9 regional championships in basketball. Several times beating CCH in the finals and there were several others the Birds lost in the finals. That is one championship every 3 years.

I don't know the exact record between the 2 schools but even if CCH is up in the series at least since 1976 the wins that count are the regional championships and to be honest the only ones I can think of are the ones with Andy Listerman and the team with Nesto and Co. Somebody may be able to provide some additional information with regard to CCH's regional championship success in basketball over the last 30 years.

CCH dominated the region in the late 60's - I believe they won 4 or 5 straight. They lost on a controversial half court (full court?) shot to Earlington in the state championship - I have heard (have not seen them) that there are pictures where the Earlington player clearly has the ball in his hand, and the clock shows 0:00 in the background.

Andy Listerman & Company was '92, and then they broke that drought with their semi-final appearance in '04.

Heck, I don't think there was this much bickering back and forth during the week of the football game this past year! They are both great schools with each having a lot to be proud about. Neither one is perfect and neither one is right for all kids everywhere. We've done well against them at times, and they've done well against us at times. I respect the heck out of CovCath and their accomplishments. I'm glad they are our most intense rivals and hopefully the folks at the KHSAA won't screw it up. When we beat them its not because I get some perverse joy out of it; its because I know we've beaten a very good football program and dramatically improved our chances of winning state.

Although a little late, I have to come to BFritz's defense on this. Like I said earlier, I would expect Highlands players/fans etc. to be offended by this comment, but like BFritz said it was taken the wrong way. He was simply expressing his opinion not stating it as fact, and he isn't the only one who thinks that whether other people say it or not. Just thought I'd give my two cents.

Gracias, I feel like I'm on a boat in the middle of nowhere sometimes just getting bombs dropped on me.

Highlands had basically a 3 year stretch when they won all those games against CCH. Smith, Lorenzen, Herald and company owned CovCath. But if you go back, from like 90'-96', I'm not sure if Highlands even beat CCH one time. And since the previously mentioned trio have graduated, its been all CCH again.

Blue, have you bothered to look at the scores of the games in the past several years? How can you possibly say CCH has bee dominating since the Lorenzen/Smith era?

How would 1 of 3 points being wrong make nothing accurate about it? Anyways, the 2 kids have nothing to do with my point. That's only 2, and did they play sports, and name some more who switched to CovCath for sports because they couldn't make it academic wise at CovCath

Fritz, the academics at Highlands are second to none. Always the top academic school in the state. Cov Cath being a non public does not get evaluated by the same ratings system. I'm sure Cov Cath has top notch academics, but do not attempt to belittle the academics at Highlands. You are only showing your ignorance.

I believe blue was talking about basketball...

I never said they were failing, NEVER, I said problems with academics and/or discipline, which I am friends with just about every, if not every teacher at CovCath at the time.

Since you are such good friends with the teachers at Cov Cath, you should ask them why they were unable to properly prepare those students for the rigors of High school academics. It seems the teachers at Highlands were able to pull it off. All those players graduated and earned diplomas. Plus, as a bonus, they got State Championship rings!

My bad, sorry Blue!
