I think Cov. Cath. became Highlands rival after beating Highlands in 1987 and winning state. Each year after that it got bigger and bigger.

 

 

In 1986 NewCath was playing in their third consecutive AA state final losing to Mayfield.

NC and Highlands had a great rivalry during the seventies and somewhat in the eighties with HHS getting the better of NC. Your comment on having to wear our equipment on the bus after the game is correct. I believe the Highlands fans started this tradition of stoning the buses because our old yellow bus just could'nt hold up as good as their rented Airporters with custom captain chairs etc...

Being less than 5 miles apart, I can see how NCC would be the logical choice for biggest rival back then, but being number 2 wasn't much different in anything than name. I guess we could have counted rocks and broken windows to get an accurate count. Come to think of it, some of the faculty at the time tried to tell me that NCC was our biggest rivalry too. Maybe so, but I never hated NCC.

I don't pretend to know how this thing got started, but I'm pretty sure that after back to back stonings both administrations had had enough and the police presence for a few years there after was huge. I'm pretty sure some of those same shenannigans is what led to NCC and HHS cancelling their game.

I'm just saying that we in NKY took our football very seriously back in the day. Sometimes too serously. :laugh: I don't pretend to know how it all got started or even when. In todays day and age, arrests would be made, law suits would be filed, and congressional hearings would take place.

You are correct. Elder replaced NCC on the Highlands schedule in the Sept 18/19 date slot. Highlands was coming off a spectacular 1998 in which they won games by large margins over just about everyone but did not have a "marquee" game on the schedule. The closest game was the first one 51-41 over Male and the margins got wider including 56-7 in the state final. The next logical step for Mueller and possible national recognition was to take on some big name teams. Elder came on the schedule first at the PIT in 1999 and then at Paul Brown Stadium in 2000. Both Elder games were the only defeats for Highlands. In 2000 Highlands also beat Trinity in the opener.

 

In 2001 Highlands opened with losses to Henry Clay and Male. Beechwood came on the schedule since the Elder series had ended and Beechwood was not allowed to play CovCath.

I believe that they dropped to AA in '83. They played in the '86 AA state championship game. The one year absence of the game really took the luster off of that one. That and the fact that CovCath was actually beating Highlands.
