Why is Highlands v Cov. Cath. a great rivalry?

Featured Replies

Seeing how you guys won't stop the P E ing contest on your own, I'll try again. This is a good topic in January and I can think of alot of great games over the years that you could be talkiing about. Instead its been a severe dissapointment to read.

Stop worry about the transfers and get back to the games. Pretty Please!

I agree 32, lets get back to talking about the games. My favorite was in 75. We beat them something like 56 to 0. I got the only interception of my high school career out in the flats on about the CovCath 25 yd line. Nothing but open field in front of me and I intercepted the ball running at full speed towards the goal line. Unfortunately, I was tackled from behind at about the 10 yd line (speed was not my forte) and had my ankle severely sprained in the process. So much for interceptions. But it was a great game! Well, at least for us. Was that Ray's first year or did he become the head coach the next year?

I liked the game in 79 regular season game myself. I was a sophmore and none of us thought we would play because we knew it would be a tight game. Then came and injury and bam! I was in the game. I don't know who was more shocked, me or my sophmore teammates. One had just finished telling me we weren't going to get in, we all speculated who the lucky one would be if any of us. I picked a few guys who I thought had a chance, none of which were me. Then the next thing I knew the coach called my name. :D First play clueless, second play tentative, third play I absolutely destroyed the right outside linebacker. :fight: After that I was good to go, but so was the guy I replaced. I split time the rest of the game. Still it was fun. There's nothing like the first taste of competition against a huge rival in an atmosphere like that when your on the field. :ylsuper:

What is everyone's opinion on when exactly this became a rivalry? Just curious to see what everyone thinks.

according to CovCath see Post #4.

I graduated from HHS in 1981 and I always thought of NewCath as our #1 rival and CovCath as 2nd. I'm not sure what year NC changed from 3a to 2a but I know while they were in 3a they seem to be our #1 rival. I think the best game between Highlands and CovCath had to be your senior year. I can still see the Schulte(sp) boy slamming Johnny Bankempers head on the ground after Johnny scored the winning Td. He seemed to be upset! That really started the rivalry with CovCath. JMO

In 1986 New Cath was still AAA and a bigger rival.

I think Cov. Cath. became Highlands rival after beating Highlands in 1987 and winning state. Each year after that it got bigger and bigger.

That's funny, I distinctly remember having to wear my equipment and helmet when leaving the game on the bus and vice versa for HHS starting in 78 for my experience. Sounds like a bitter rivalry to me. :D

My Question is as much as you want to cry foul for CCH. I don't think any team in the history of the 9th has got more bad calls or play their ways in the state tournament than Holmes.

Big Stud,

I hope you didn't think that I was crying foul about the 67 and 68 games? I even mentioned that the goal was good. I also mentioned the Holmes game and the no call in their State Finals game. I was just trying to give some CCH younger grads/students some "truthful and honest" history lessons.

BTW when CCH lost to Earlington in the finals, it was at the time the closest the Ninth Region had come to winning the state finals and now with Simon Kenton out of the 9th, it is still the closest the 9th has come.

Didn't Highlands lose in the Finals in '97 or so? I know they at least made it to the semi-finals.

And people can't figure out why these two are rivals?

Just reading this thread has intensified my thoughts on the bluebirds!

There is much love between the two! :jump:

You make my point. The kids would have made it academically at any school. For Fritz to say they could not cut it at Cov Cath is a ridiculous statement. It had nothing to do with the teachers at Highlands being better than at Cov Cath, I just had to get a dig in at Fritz's expense.

How about they made it at Highlands because their curriculum is not as rigorous?

Finals. We lost to Eastern in the Championship game.

Sandman32,

NC and Highlands had a great rivalry during the seventies and somewhat in the eighties with HHS getting the better of NC. Your comment on having to wear our equipment on the bus after the game is correct. I believe the Highlands fans started this tradition of stoning the buses because our old yellow bus just could'nt hold up as good as their rented Airporters with custom captain chairs etc...
