Why is Highlands v Cov. Cath. a great rivalry?

Featured Replies

Sometimes people just don't fit in at CCH. It is very click oriented at the student level. I'm not saying it's bad or good, just that it is.

Dixie doesn't have clicks? Or any high school in Kentucky for that matter?

You are correct in that you went back to the 97/98 season when HHS went down State in back to back years. However since the 99/00 season CovCath is 6-2 against HHS. While I can't prove it, my educated guess (maybe you can but I have tried finding the information but can't) is that CovCaht has beaten HHS more times than HHS has beaten CovCath since the Basketball series began.

Basketball:

2001: CCH beat HHS @ CCH - Then sophomore Ross Neltner complained about the conditions in CCH's gym, as the cold air caused slippery spots on the floor...

2002: Cov Cath beat Highlands twice, once in the regional semi-finals.

2003: Cov Cath knocked off Highlands @ Highlands...HHS' only regular season loss to a NKY team that year (unless you count Mason County as NKY). The 2 teams matched up in the 1st round of region out at Ryle, and HHS won by 20+.

2004: Cov Cath defeated Highlands handily.

2005: Cov Cath beat HHS in one of the ugliest high school basketball games I've seen in quite some time.

That's off the top of my head, but I think those are right...

b. Players go to Highlands when they can't make it at CovCath

Classless statement, and I have told him so. Also others have told him so and some of those were even CovCath grads. Just as I will support parents who choose sending their child/children to CovCath for academic/family/religious/sports reason, I have no problem in other parents sending their child/children to HHS.

Statement: False

OK, that's the only one that you said was wrong. I can only remember 4 players who switched and played football in recent times.

The first was somewhere between 96 and 98, he left for academic reasons as well as discipline problems (I know it was one of the two, but I think both).

The other 3 were from the most recent pronbems. One of them left because he was struggling academically, then another left because he hit a kid in the face, and from what I hear, it was specifically so he'd get kicked out so he could go to Highlands with the friend I just mentioned. The 3rd also left because it got too hard academically, they were not "forced out"

Thanks for the info. I was not able to find it in my initial research, but it was not exhaustive. There is no doubt that both schools are very good schools, academically and athletically. I think with CovCath coming up on the short end of the stick so often recently in the football matchups that it has made the game so much more important to them. What is even tougher on fans like Fritz is that this year was CovCath's big chance and they couldn't pull it out.

and name some more who switched to CovCath for sports because they couldn't make it academic wise at CovCath

B - don't speak about how virtuous CCH is and then make a blanket statement that is 100% untrue. None of the boys that left CCH for HHS were failing. Period. One had discipline issues which seemed to have been corrected at HHS. Props to HHS. The others, especially the one with the highest profile, were not faililng.

Do not make a generalization and try to ruin reputations of boys that were 16 and 17 years old when they made their decisions. Its very unbecoming and, truth be told, should be followed up with an apology.

Mike Mitchell IN NO WAY left CCH for academics.

Time to zip it, BFritz.

The newspaper said he did. :D

Discipline

The other 3 were from the most recent problems. what does "from the most recent problems" mean?

One of them left because he was struggling academically, if you don't know this for sure, you shouldn't say it.

then another left because he hit a kid in the face, and from what I hear, it was specifically so he'd get kicked out so he could go to Highlands there are easier ways to get into Highlands...I never hit anyone and I got to go there with the friend I just mentioned.

The 3rd also left because it got too hard academically, everyone knows that the academics at Highlands are not up to the standards of other schools in the state

they were not "forced out" nobody said they were (except for the first one)...but it could have been the case that they simply chose to leave

Not to say the 4 players in question were not good players, but you have to realize there were several hundred other players in the last 10 - 12 years that helped at least a little with Highlands success.

First off, Covington Catholic makes a "Beat Highlands" t-shirt (or something similar) every year.

Secondly, Covington Catholic's last state title was in 2002 - a baseball championship. They also won a state title in football in '97. Before that, they won back-to-back titles in '93 & '94.

Right if you read the previous posts this post was not about football it was about the other team sports. The comparison made was that Highlands is the best football school in NKY going against the best "sports" school in NKY. The baseball title was an oversight that has already been corrected.

As far as the beat highlands t-shirts goes, I will make this comparison. You will never see a floor rush after a game at Rupp Arena because it is expected that UK wins. I doubt you will see en masse highlands students with beat cov. cath t-shirts for the same reason, it is expected. :D:D:D

I never said they were failing, NEVER, I said problems with academics and/or discipline, which I am friends with just about every, if not every teacher at CovCath at the time.

Your implication that they could not handle the academics is incorrect. Period.

Secondly, this board is not intended to be a discussion on an individual's academics. Talk about how well he catches or how he can't block or how slow he might be, but it is no one's business as to a boy's academic ability.

I'd also question any teacher who shared academic information with you.

First of all, almost all high school boys have problems with academics at one time or another. If they were not failing, they would not have had to leave.

Secondly, due to federal privacy laws, if "just about every, if not every teacher at CovCath" discuss ANYTHING about individual students with a third party (YOU) they will have VERY serious legal problems.

BTW, we've now shown the UGLY side of this great rivalry.

It was other students who told me about it, actually, every teacher had no comment. Just because someone isn't failing doesn't mean they're not struggling, and on a side not, they were not forced out because of race

BFritz - I'd encourage you to stop while you still MAY be able to get out. You're just digging yourself deeper & deeper.
