Why is Highlands v Cov. Cath. a great rivalry?

Featured Replies

b. Players go to Highlands when they can't make it at CovCath

I try not to let you get under my skin but sometimes I just can't help it.

Are you saying that EVERY kid that goes from CovCath to Highlands does so because "they can't make it at CovCath"? Your implication is CovCath is such a superior school. Sorry B...it is not.

What about the kids that leave for Dixie, Beechwood, Holmes, Ludlow, Boone Co. NCC, St. Henry...etc. Do these kids also leave because "they can't make it at CovCath"?

Could it be they could very well have made it a CovCath but chose to leave for some other reason? Maybe, unlike SOME people, they realize that CovCath is NOT the best school in the universe.

I know you are fiercly loyal to your Alma Mater and I admire that about you. However, perfection has yet to be achieved anywhere here on earth...not even in Park Hills.

All most probably true, but as you will learn as you grow older (and you will grow older) pointing fingers at others only leaves yourself open to others pointing it right back at you. Learn to consider the source of the finger pointing and be better than the person who is pointing that finger at you. You received a great education at CovCath that not many receive, use it. Remember how the crowd loved CovCath at Rupp because of how you the student body cheered. No one in the CovCath section was rude, crude, or poor sports they just cheered their team on, by being funny, loud, and doing cheers that no one else had thought of. Be proud you are a CovCath grad and show the current students how a CovCath grad acts; you would be surprised at how many of the current students look up to the former students. They might not admit it but they do.

I simply made a few points, you argued that one was wrong, and then you post that, which was not relevant in any way, shape, or form. You attack me and say that I have no class, when I simply posted facts that were in no way cruel or attacking anyone.

CovCath students- make sure you're right before saying anything, don't attack anyone, but defend CovCath with facts, just as I did.

Thanks oldguy :thumb:

How would 1 of 3 points being wrong make nothing accurate about it? Anyways, the 2 kids have nothing to do with my point. That's only 2, and did they play sports, and name some more who switched to CovCath for sports because they couldn't make it academic wise at CovCath

Excuse me nothing accurate about point #2.

Excuse me nothing accurate about point #2.

Once again, if you'll look at every kid who switched from CovCath to Highlands and played football in recent times you'll find it to be true

Number 3 is not very accurate either IMO now that I look at it again. :D

Number 1 or a (whatever) is all that is remotely accurate. Is this person ( Big F) serious or is this really tongue in cheek?

I assure you, though misguided in this argument as I believe him to be, he is 100% for real. He is the biggest, blue colored eye glasses wearing fanatical CCH supporter I know. When we stand next to each other the world turns green.

for those of you that may not get that joke, that is because my glasses are red. :D

Wow as a supporter of the team from Ft Thomas I will try not to be drawn in :fight:

BFritz,

As a fan of Sports in Northern Kentucky and thus both schools in this discussion, I can say with some certainty that your Principal, Athletic Director, and Teachers, didn't teach you to speak this way about others. The one thing that I have been impressed with at CovCath at the many games I have attended there over the years, is the way the students cheer on their team, they do it with class and “with a Sprit that will not die”. Your above statement didn't show any class at all and as an Alum of CovCath it doesn’t make CovCath look very good either.

Gunner11,

I think you will find that CovCath won the State High School Baseball Tournament in 2002.

Thanks for the info. I was not able to find it in my initial research, but it was not exhaustive. There is no doubt that both schools are very good schools, academically and athletically. I think with CovCath coming up on the short end of the stick so often recently in the football matchups that it has made the game so much more important to them. What is even tougher on fans like Fritz is that this year was CovCath's big chance and they couldn't pull it out.

Once again, if you'll look at every kid who switched from CovCath to Highlands and played football in recent times you'll find it to be true

What to be true?

The only thing I know for sure is they went to a better football school. :D

One kid in the last 10 or 12 (mid 90's) years had discipline problems at CC which caused him to be asked to depart...

When you say "EVERY kid"...you couldn't be more wrong.

What to be true?

Okay, lets look at each statement, on it own merit.

A. They're two of the top teams in 3a in the state every year.

If I were a fan from Bell, Lex Cath or Western Kentucky etc. I might not agree with this statement but it would be hard to agrue with it. To win a State Championship in 3a you must beat the best team in Northern Kentucky and more times than not it is either Highlands and or CovCath. For years if Highlands didn't win it, it was because CovCath did.

Statement: True

b. Players go to Highlands when they can't make it at CovCath

Classless statement, and I have told him so. Also others have told him so and some of those were even CovCath grads. Just as I will support parents who choose sending their child/children to CovCath for academic/family/religious/sports reason, I have no problem in other parents sending their child/children to HHS.

Statement: False

While I wish that the big 4a school in NKy didn't have to come up agaisnt the big Louisville schools each year, they the NKy 4a school haven't won a title in years. Is it fair? Not sure but

CovCath and HHS play every year and a lot of times play again in the playoffs, ending one teams season.

Statement: True

I do not think the rivalry has been diminished at all it is still alive and well. Which was the point of the UM vs. OSU comparison. One team can dominate the other for the series or a period of time and it still retain the flavor. This year it was obvious how much the football game meant to Cov. Catholic. The students made beat Highlands t-shirts, and for good reason, because they arguably had the more experienced team and were playing at home. It was their year to beat the Birds.

They are not dominant in the form of winning state championships in team sports. There are multiple other schools in Northern Kentucky that have won more state titles in the recent past than Covinton Catholic. Last time Cov. Cath won a state title in Cross Country was 1994, Golf was the only other state title I could find in 1984. Brossart, St. Henry, Highlands, Notre Dame, etc. have all won state titles in the last 5 years, with a few of those mentioned in multiple sports.

First off, Covington Catholic makes a "Beat Highlands" t-shirt (or something similar) every year.

Secondly, Covington Catholic's last state title was in 2002 - a baseball championship. They also won a state title in football in '97. Before that, they won back-to-back titles in '93 & '94.

What to be true?

A high and tight fastball from OB!
