DaBirdMan Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Usually a great rivalry has teams that beat each other on a regular basis, where one team does not dominate and games are always in doubt. (Think Michigan/Ohio State) This "rivalry" has none of this. Highlands has dominated this series for years. Cov Cath's previous coach had a record of 2-15 against the Birds during the Mueller years and the new coach is 0-1. So 16 of the last 18 games have been won by the Birds. Why Is this a great rivalry?
cshs81 Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Its a rivalry because if there is one team HHS wants to beat each year, its CCH. If there's one team CCH wants to beat each year, its HHS. Annually, these are either the top 2 or 2 of the top 3 or 4 teams in NKY that play in the same district and their games have state championship implications. Simple as that.
malachicrunch Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 These 2 teams are the only 3A teams in NKY. There is no other rivalry school available, especially for HHS. Cov Cath still has rivalries with other class schools that are geographical rivals. Since no schools in HHS backyard will play them, they are relegated to scheduling teams from other areas. NCC would be a huge rivalry game for HHS. I would like to see NCC on Highlands schedule instead of one of the big powerhouses. Until that happens CovCath is it.
Theoldguy Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 I went to the CovCath web site to see if I could see why they might agree or disagree with you about the CovCath vs. Highlands games and found out why they look at this game as such a big one...... The greatest game ever played at CovCath Our maybe it has to do with yours and theirs history in Basketball, as Highlands has just as much trouble beating CovCath in Basketball as CovCath has beating Highland in Football. Not sure, but either way it’s great to be a fan of sports when the two high schools go at each other, and it isn't any different when Notre Dame Academy goes up against Highlands on the girls side....
birdboy Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 This is a great rivalry. I hope never to see this rivalry go away.
All Play No Work Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 This is a great rivalry. I hope never to see this rivalry go away. Well when 6 classes of football and a 1.5 multiplier for Privates is enacted it might just go away.
Theoldguy Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Well when 6 classes of football and a 1.5 multiplier for Privates is enacted it might just go away. While "APNW" you just might be right, but I hope not. As a fan, I hope they both continue to play as it is a great Saturday afternoon or Friday night when the two go head to head against each other, and I guess that the interest in this game isn't just limited to us in Northern Kentucky.
cshs81 Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Well when 6 classes of football and a 1.5 multiplier for Privates is enacted it might just go away. The multiplier with have little impact if its even considered. 6 classes will not be seen either.

Gunner11 Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I do not think it would benefit either Highlands or Campbell County/NCC.

I would say that you are not correct about Highlands basketball having trouble beating Cov. Catholic. As was stated previously Highlands has won 16 out of the last 18 in football. The last 12 Highlands vs. Cov. Catholic basketball games it is even 6-6.
colonel-fan Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I do not think it would benefit either Highlands or Campbell County/NCC. Is that the reason they don't play? There sure seems to be a lot of Bird fans eager to play NewCath.
Gunner11 Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 In most years, simply based on size NCC would not be able to compete. This year's NCC team won state in A, and got poleaxed by Cov Catholic 42-0. No disrespect to NCC but they would probably have the same thing happen against Highlands. Therefore I do not think it benefits either team. Campbell County could compete on a size basis, but have been an average football team at best over the last 8 years. They have had one winning season in that time period, this year's 6-4 team. The last times Campbell and Highlands played it was ugly and I remember Highlands scoring 88 on the Camels once. That is not really helpful for either team.
All Play No Work Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Why won't the backyard schools, like NewCath and Campbell, schedule Highlands? Here we go for the 799th time. Both Campbell Co and NCC used to play Highlands. Both had increases in district games they must play (both have 7 games they must play each year) and Highlands had the opportunity to play some huge marquee games so they were logical teams to drop because there is limited time to play non-district games. Plus those games (in the late 90s) were just as uncompetitive for Highlands as any other game. If Highlands really, really wanted to play them they could but they(Highlands) would have to be schedule magicians and pass up the opportunity to play games against great competition, games at Paul Brown Stadium, and games on TV.

Thanks for clearing that up for the 799th time. I was unsure of how much animosity those noncompetitive games had generated (88 points is a lot of points), but it sounds as if the games aren't being scheduled due to a lack of common open dates more than anything else.
