Inside the 14th Region - Week 11

Recommended Posts

1.Perry County Central (22-7):

The Commodores finished up their regular season last Friday when they defeated Breathitt County 66-57 over in Jackson. The win pushed the Commodores win streak to 6 straight and have won 13 of their last 15 games heading into their first round district game with Leslie County, a team they defeated easily earlier in the season, 69-27, on Leslie County’s home court, the Eagles have to play at John C. Combs Arena, home of the Perry Central Commodores.

2.Knott County Central (19-8):

The Patriots also finished up the regular season on Saturday night when they also defeated Breathitt County in Hindman on Senior Night. The Patriots pulled out a thrilling 68-65 victory over the Bobcats heading into district play in two weeks.

3.Letcher county Central (19-8):

The Cougars have won 3 straight including a big 69-59 victory over district foe, Cordia. The Cougars have now won 7 of their last 8 games and will have two more games this week, both at home against Hazard on Tuesday and Pike Central on Thursday.

4.Cordia (12-9):

The Lions have fallen on hard times lately, having lost 3 straight and 4 of their last 6 games with two of them being region opponents, one being a district opponent, the team they will meet in the first round of the 53rd district tournament, Letcher Central 69-59. Buckhorn defeated the Lions on their own home court, 53-48.

5.Powell County (18-8):

The Pirates have put together back to back wins over Jackson County 63-62 and Jackson City 80-62 to snap their 3 game losing streak. The Pirates have two big road test this week when they travel to Wolfe County looking to defeat the Wolves once again and at Hazard.

6.Wolfe County (14-13):

The Wolves are starting to play better, having won 4 of their last 5 games and have everyone back from the injury bug that bit them earlier in the season. The Wolves went to Irvine to take on the Engineers looking to get revenge from an earlier defeat and revenge is what it was as the Wolves de-railed the Engineers big 57-39.

7.Estill County (19-7):

Engineers are still chasing history. Estill County has not won 20 games in 1 season since 1992 and they currently sit at 19-7. Estill County was looking to pick up win #20 on Saturday when they hosted Wolfe County, a team they defeated earlier in the season 77-75 but that wouldn’t come to pass this time around as the Engineers fell to the Wolves 57-39. Can the Engineers get their 20th win this week when they host all 3; Owsley County (Tuesday), Menifee County (Thursday) and St. Patrick (Friday) or will the 20th win elude them?

8.Breathitt County (15-13):

Another team that is struggling, at the worst time they could be. The Bobcats have lost 4 of their last 5 games. The Bobcats had lost to both South Laurel and Johnson Central before picking up a road win @ Newport but returning home and falling to both Knott Central and Perry Central. The Bobcats will host Owsley County tomorrow night and then travel back up to NKY to face Bellevue on Tuesday.

9.Buckhorn (16-13):

The Wildcats are starting to play a tad bit better then what they had been playing. Coming into the month of February the Wildcats had lost 4 straight and 5 of their previous 7 games, Buckhorn has now won 3 of their last 4 games including two big district wins over both Leslie County 69-58 and Hazard 47-35. Buckhorn also picked up a big big road win @ Cordia on Thursday 53-48.

10.Hazard (13-11):

The Bulldogs are playing better, having won 3 straight and 4 of their last 5 games. Can the Bulldogs keep this momentum going this week when they face Letcher @ Letcher and Powell County at home?

11.Leslie County (16-10):

Once was a top 5 team and was playing like they could contend for a regional championship has fallen and fallen hard. The Eagles have lost 4 straight and 6 of their last 7 games. All were by double digits with two of them being to district foes, Hazard and Letcher Central. Two of those losses were the same exact score, 64-53 to both Letcher Central and Hazard.

12.Jackson City (7-21):

The Tigers have now lost 6 straight games and 14 of their last 16 games.

13.Owsley County (4-21):

The Owls continue to struggle, having lost 3 straight and 4 of their last 6 games, the good news is, they beat Lee County to get the 3 spot, the bad news is, they will face Estill County on the Engineers home court in the first round of the 56th district tournament.

14.Lee County (7-19):

The Bobcat woes continue. They have now lost 3 straight. The Bobcats have gone 4 straight years without winning 10 games in a season. They have 4 games remaining this season, can they make it to 10 or will it be 5 straight seasons without a 10 win season? Red Bird, Betsy Layne, Wolfe and Powell County (District Tournament)

15.Jenkins (3-23):

After picking up back to back wins over Rose Hill and June Buchanan, the Cavaliers have now lost 3 straight.

16.June Buchanan (3-24):

JBS has now lost 7 straight games since their last W.

17.Riverside Christian (5-22):

The Rams picked up back to back wins last week, defeating Piarist School and KSFTD to push their win total to 5 games. That’s impressive for a school that small. Keep up R.C.

I came so so close to putting Powell County at 4 and dropping Cordia down to about 7th or 8th.

I don't think Cordia can beat Powell County. Coach Fraley is Old School and he has his Pirates playing hard and disciplined. Their only negative is they don't have much size, basically starting five guards.

It's hard to get a firm grip on rankings. Like for instance: Powell County defeated Buckhorn by 16 to begin the season @ Buckhorn....Buckhorn beat Cordia @ Cordia by 5..Estill County defeated Buckhorn by 17 but split with Powell...It's like that throughout this whole region...

I know. It's been crazy this year.

In Buckhorn's case I think they are playing better now than earlier in the season. Can't ever count out Noble's teams. The guy's one of the best, a winner.
