11th Region Week 2 Recap and Rankings

Recommended Posts

Another week in the books in the always tough 11th region. Plenty of interesting results from the past week and a lot to look forward to this week as well! Lets see how the teams stack up!!

Team of the Week

Bryan Station - The Defenders had a great week with 2 big city wins. The first came against district rival Henry Clay 84-74 and then followed by a 65-47 victory over Tates Creek. Big week for Terrance Clayton-Murphy with 20 points in each game. The Defenders continue to trend upward.

Player of the Week

Michael Moreno - Scott County - Moreno had an outstanding week for the Cardinals. He averaged 25 points and 14 rebounds in two victories to help keep the Cardinals undefeated on the season. Moreno came away with 32 points and 16 rebounds in a hard fought road victory against LCA early in the week.

Team Rankings

1. Scott County

The Cardinals had a big win on the road against another top team in the region in LCA. Michael Moreno had a huge game for the Cardinals pouring in 32 points and 16 rebounds. Cooper Robb and Bryce Long chipped in 14 and 13 points respectively in the win for the Cards. They ended the week with a 23 point victory against Knott County Central. Scott County looks to continue its early season success this week with matchups against rival Lexington Catholic and 11th region opponent Lafayette.

2. Lexington Christian

The Eagles started the week off in great fashion with a convincing road victory at Tates Creek then took a step back with a tough home loss to a good Scott County team in a game that was much closer then the final score might have indicated. This week is another big week for the Eagles as they travel to Paul Laurence Dunbar for a key 43rd District matchup and then end the week with a road swing to always tough Boyle County.

3. Paul Laurence Dunbar

An argument could be made that the Bulldogs could take the number 2 spot in this weeks rankings but for now they are coming in at number 3. The Bulldogs picked up two big 43rd District wins this past week beating Lafayette 85-57 and following that up with a 79-62 win over a tough Lexington Catholic team. This week is another big week for the Bulldogs starting off with a key district matchup at home against LCA and then heading to Louisville for the King of the Bluegrass. Their first round matchup.....the Ballard Bruins. Shoutout to Taveion Hollingsworth for passing Nick Hudson for 4th all time on the PLD scoring list.

4. Lexington Catholic

The Knights had a tough week with losses on the road to a good Corbin team, in a game that ended in some controversy, and a tough loss at PLD in a game that was 4 points after the 3rd quarter. However the Knights did bounce back with a neutral court overtime victory over State Runner Up Doss to end the week. This week the Knights host Scott County before heading to Boca Raton for The Rock Holiday Classic. While the record may not reflect it, the Knights are a solid team and the early season schedule will only help to make them better as the season continues.

5. Bryan Station

Our biggest mover in the ranking this week is the Defenders. They came away with two big city victories including a key early season win over district opponent Henry Clay. Follow that up with a beat down of Tates Creek and the Defenders are looking good. Only one game on the schedule this week for Bryan Station, a home tilt against Lincoln County.

6. Madison Central

The Indians had a tough road loss to GRC to start the week but salvaged the week with wins at Montgomery County and a home win over Male. Isaiah Cozart had a good end of the week and is showing why he could be a force in the region by seasons end. This week the Indians travel to Collins before heading to Rowan County for the Kentucky Bank Challenge.

7. Lafayette

The Generals started the week off with a bad loss at Paul Laurence Dunbar in a game where they led 16-8 to start but quickly fell in a deep hole and couldn't recover. They did salvage the week with a win against host Bourbon County in the Kentucky Bank Shootout. The Generals head to Tates Creek and Scott County this week in what should be two good tests for them.

8. Henry Clay

A tough week for the Blue Devils. They dropped 3 games this week against some good competition in Bryan Station, Eastern, and Pulaski County. The good news though is all those games were close and the Blue Devils show signs of being a good competitive team by seasons end. This week the Blue Devils host Western Hills in their only contest.

9. Madison Southern

The Eagles split this weeks decisions first falling at a good North Laurel team and then pulling out a close win over 12th region foe Lincoln County. The Eagles look to stay on track this week with games against Estill County before heading to Rowan County for the Kentucky Bank Challenge.

10. Woodford County

If anyone would like to stand up and figure out the 41st district please do so. A weird week for the Yellow Jackets. They began the week by blowing a 12 point halftime lead at home against Western Hills before coming back and beating Franklin County Friday night. I just want to say that at this point in the season you could put all 4 41st District teams in a hat and pull the rankings that way and it might be as good! The Yellow Jackets head to GRC this week before ending the week hosting Tates Creek.

11. Franklin County

Again the 41st District is a mess at this point and hard to tell who will be the teams to represent the district at the regional tournament this season. I do think when the smoke clears the Franklin County will come out on top but for now I have to put them just behind Woodford. The Flyers dropped 2 games this week, first to Collins and then at Woodford. Franklin County has 3 road games this week at Thomas Nelson, at Frankfort in a key district matchup, and then finish the week at Montgomery County.

12. Sayre

The Spartans had a big week compiling 3 wins over Frankfort, Villa Maddona, and Harrison County. Once again, I would like to report on Jake Duby and his happenings but Sayre has not reported any stats!! Only one game on the docket for the Spartans this week as they host the Berea Pirates.

13. Frankfort

While the Panthers only have 1 win on the year it is a district win against Western Hills who previously beat Woodford County. They remain the only team in the 41st with a clean district record. A big matchup with Franklin County does loom this Friday.

14. Western Hills

Wolverine fans could have a beef to be ranked higher after pulling off their first district victory since 2011 against Woodford County, yes I said 2011!! However, Western Hills had a chance to make a big statement Friday night hosting Frankfort High and moving to 2-0 in the district but ended up losing by 18 in a game that was tied at the half. This week they host Spencer County before heading to Henry Clay.

15. Tates Creek

Is Tates Creek really the 15th best team in the region? Probably not, but at this point they haven't shown anything to prove otherwise. They are currently 0-6 and have only been competitive in 2 of those games. It gets no easier for them this week as they host Lafayette before heading to Pendelton County. Hopefully for Mike Allen's squad they can get things going in a positive direction.

16. Berea

Don't look now but the Pirates are 4-0!! They picked up wins against KSD and Owsley County this past week and David Gadd is averaging over 20 points to start the season. If the Pirates can pull off a win against Sayre this week I may just have to move them up the rankings. They also face Lynn Camp and Heritage Academy.

17. Model

Another tough week for the Patriots with losses against Lynn Camp and Barbourville but did manage a win over Williamsburg to end the week. Some winnable games on the horizon this week with Burgin, Lee County, and Western Hills.
