Ryle JV wins 3-0 over Cooper. Complete game 3-hit shutout by Alex Goodridge, who has been lights out all year long. He is going to make an impact at varsity level next year. Ryle versus Beechwood on Wednesday at Beechwood.

I won't disagree with the selection of Coach Mullins as Coach of the Year. Great coach who did a terrific job with a young Beechwood team. I do think it's a shame that Coach Roesel from Ryle didn't get any recognition though. Picked up his 400th career win this season, team has 32 wins (to date) - which is 2nd most in school history - and played a very tough schedule, has advanced his team to state as 9th Region representative, and is, by anyone's standards, an excellent coach. Certainly deserving of some type of post-season honor - hopefully it'll be holding the state championship trophy. :thumb:

Great first game matchup. 32-7 9th Region champion and #10-ranked Ryle vs. 24-7 10th Region champion and #15 ranked Harrison County. Both teams with excellent head coaches and coming off very strong performances in their respective regional tourneys. Ryle is 7-3 in their last 10 games and have allowed only 5 runs in their last 4 games, while Harrison County is 8-2 in their last 10 games and have allowed only 2 runs in the past 5 games. They have played 7 common opponents, with Ryle sporting an 10-0 record (played Scott 3x, Campbell County 1x) and Harrison County owning a 6-4 record (played Scott 2x, Campbell County 2x). Here is a breakdown of these opponents and scores. Personally, I will go with Ryle. Besides being a homer pick :thumb:, they are playing excellent baseball in all three phases of the game - pitching, defense, and (especially) hitting - and there seems to be a special chemistry about this team. I look for a close game, but think Ryle wins 4-2 or thereabouts. Who you got?

Here is my understanding of the selections: The "All-Star" teams are those individuals selected by the coaches as the top players at their respective positions from NKY (9th and 10th regions). There is no game associated with these selections, just the honor of being selected. The two players listed under "Senior All-Star", "Junior All-Star", and "Sophomore All-Star" heading have been selected by the 9th Region coaches as the two players that will represent the 9th Region in the state all-star games. Every region will select two players and there will be three separate games, one for each grade level. I am not entirely certainly why Suchanek (Beechwood) and Jones (HHS) were selected as 9th Region reps to the All-Star games but didn't make the NKY All-Star team. First off, a HUGE congrats to those players listed! EVERY single one of them was deserving on the honor. Please don't take anything away from these young men - they are all outstanding players. Were there some absolutely terrrific ballplayers not included on this list? Sure, no question, but not everyone can make it and it makes more sense to congratulate those who did than go on endlessly about those who didn't, imo.

I forgot he came out to start the 7th. We were talking about how not bringing him in that inning would preserve him for today and that sort of stuck in my mind. Ryle still will have plenty of pitching available though. See can be very, very effective when he's on.

I meant Ethan Brennan, not Jackson. Not sure where the heck I came up with that one. And I do think he'll get the nod.

My guess is we'll see Ethan Jackson on the bump for Ryle. I believe Hoard is eligible to relieve as well.

I would not use the word "over-hyped" when referring to CCH, as they are year in and year out one of - if not the - most consistent programs in the area. Keep It Real is on point with one item, though I would state it a little differently. And just to be fair - it applies equaly well to Ryle. I think most people would rank both CCH and Ryle in the top 3 or 4 baseball programs in the 9th, BUT it is valid to point out that between the two of them they have exactly zero regional titles since 2008 and two since 2003 (Ryle 2007; CCH 2005). For whatever reason - and certainly NCC and Beechwood are two major reasons :lol2: - they simply haven't gotten it done consistently come regional tourney time. Does that make either of them "overhyped"? No, I don't think so. They are both well-coached, very competitive teams that are always a legitimate threat to win region and deserving of the "hype", but I do think it is fair to say they have been a bit of a disappointment of late in their post-season tourney performances. I look for Ryle to change that this year. :thumb:

Talked to Tyler (Ryle 1Bman #16) after game. He is fine. Nice mark on his forehead where he got hit, either by runner's elbow or helmet. He'll be ready to go Wednesday night. Raines did a nice job filling in for him tonight.

Disappointing finish for Ryle. Congrats to Boone. Ryle would not be someone I would want as my first game reward for being a #1 seed. Of course, NCC and Beechwood aren't exactly cupcake #2 seeds either. And St Henry is a tough play with their ace on the bump.

Two years ago Newport was 7-16. Their wins were against Villa, St. Henry, Dayton (2x), Bellevue (2x), and a 6-29 Highlands team that lost their last 18 of 20 games. Highlands was not a good team that year. I remember them from that season. That's great that Newport played CCH fairly close in the tournament that year, but one game doesn't define a team as being competitive overall. Newport did not have a good season two years ago by typical "competitive" standards.

Couldn't agree more. I saw ALOT of games this year and overall I thought the umpires did a solid job. Outstanding? No. But then again, I'm not sure at this level I would expect umpires to generally be at the "outstanding" level. They are not professionals and it's not their career. I think some fans expect them to be perfect. It's unreasonable. Who of us in our own careers doesn't make mistakes? Lord knows I do. It happens, especially in fast-moving games that involve close plays. You can pretty much assume that for every bang-bang play called by an umpire, he is going to have half the fans thinking it was a great call and the other half thinking it was horrific. 9th region umps are much better than many people give them credit. Imo anyways.

I'm sure this will come off as extremely nasty and it's genuinely not meant to be . . . . . but when is the last time that Newport was meaningfully competitive? I know they advanced to the regional tourney a couple years ago, but it was primarily due to a beneficial blind seed draw. Since I've been following high school ball, I don't think Newport has had more than 6 or 7 wins in any season and has simply not been all that competitive. How far back does one have to go to find their last winning season or when they were considered the strongest team (or one of the top two) in their district? Why are they unable to put together a winning program (I honestly have no idea)?

I don't think so. I don't think there was any room on the varsity roster to bring up anyone. I'm not sure of the exact number, but they are capped how many they can dress in post-season play.

I didn't remember him getting yanked so early. So that being said, then Coach DW was indeed correct in saying that Hyde got "roughed" up a bit. Yes, Miller did a fantastic relief job. And he also pitched an outstanding game against Ryle two weeks ago. He has the makings of being a very good pitcher - great control, mixes pitches, and speeds, nice composure. Soon as he picks up a couple miles on his fastball, he is going to make some noise at the varsity level.

If the batter headed to the dugout, I'm not certain he can be brought back out to the bag. I believe he is considered to have abandoned his effort to run the bases and is therefore out regardless.

Having played just about the entire season in 60 degree weather (and rain and wind), I actually can see this being an issue, especially as it comes to the pitchers and fatiguing early.

I would like to be around for the game Coach Roesel doesn't want to win. :lol2: Don't think it's possible.

That, and if I'm not mistaken, Dunn has had issues going deep into games this year, hasn't he? I believe in the earlier Cooper-Ryle matchup, Dunn held them in check for 5 innings before things exploded in the 6th and Ryle took it to the Cooper relievers. Don't see another run-rule happening here, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar re-occurence of the events of that past game (close for a while, then Ryle jumps out to sizeable lead).

Nice information. I won't claim that Ryle has played the toughest schedule in NKY, but am certain they've played one of the toughest, so that fact that they are sitting on top of this stat by such a large margin is very impressive.

Ryle, Beechwood, and NCC would be the logical odds-on-favorite. Ryle has had the best all-around season, but NCC's pitching is a huge plus. Should be a fun tournament, but I'll go with the Raiders to capture their first regional tournament since 2007.

Any idea where the all-time winningest coach is from or where this list of the top 15 can be found? And congrats to Coach Miller!

Surprised this one hasn't gotten its own thread. I gave a brief re-cap in the "JV Tournament" thread. The short version is that Ryle won in the bottom of the 7th on a walk-off double as Ryle's runner on 1B came all the way around to score. This was a well-played and very exciting ballgame between two very good teams. Great fan turnout at Dixie, who did a great job as host, btw. I'm sure Beechwood fans and players left quite disappointed, but they had a great season, played a great game, and are a team filled with some outstanding talent. We look forward to meeting them in the finals again next year! :thumb: As for Ryle, what a season! Tied the school JV record with 26 wins and had an overall record of 26-6, including winning a very tough mid-season tourney down at Lexington Dunbar against some top-flight competition. Most people in the Ryle baseball community already know who I am, but I was privileged to be associated with this team this past season. What an incredible group of young men. It wasn't really their talent that impressed me - and that's not to say they are not talented bunch, as they most certainly are - it was how hard they worked, how coachable they were, and how well they supported one another. Not a punk or prima-donna amongst them. I was especially impressed with some of the players who did not get as much playing time as the others - they accepted the importance of their role, supported their teammates, and did their job when their name was called. It was an outstanding season from beginning to end and I enjoyed being part of it. Best of luck to those players that have ended their JV career and will be moving on to bigger and better things and look forward to seeing some of them return again next year.
