By the way 3ptshooter, has there ever been a decision on the player transferring from Boone to Beechwood? Just curious.

I would suspect it is because they don't play any of the good programs in NKY so no one gets to see them play, or gauge their strength.

I'm not beginning to say that playing club ball doesn't help players get scholarships. There is no question it does. BUT, how many kids give up basketball to play club ball and never get a smell for a scholarship. And in doing so they are deprived of participating in other sports while in high school. My point is unless the parents/player really feel the student has a very good chance to get a scholarship, playing club ball will cost the student the opportunity to play other sports and cost the family a lot of money. IMO the % of girls that get scholarships ( and I don't mean $500/yr) in relation to those that play club is very small. There just aren't that many scholarships to be had. The other point I was trying to make was a number of VB coaches tell the player they won't make the team, or at least their playing time will be liminited, if they don't play club ball. This forces kids to make a Volleyball/basketball decision when they are freshman and have no idea which way they want to go. It isn't fair to the player who isn't sure which they prefer, and unless they are TOP notch players at that time they are in no position to make that decision.

Agree.Too many athletes are sold a bill of goods that they can't be successful or make the volleyball team if they don't play v'ball year round. I don't think v'ball coaches are showing a concern for the other sports in the school when they do this. Playing year round doesn't "guarantee" success anyway. The coaches also aren't taking into considration the cost to play club ball. It is quite substatial, and some parents are put in the tough situation of explaning why they can't come up with the money for this, especially if they are in a private school and paying stiff tuition bills to begin with. All sports are becoming to specialized, and kids are missing out on experencing the fun of playing multiple sports. Most kids who play a sport year round at the expense of others look back later and wonder if they could have been sucessful at other sports, but it is too late to find out.

Isn't that a coincidence, that's the same place NCC's kicker was the whole game and their leading receiver was for 3 quarters with a shoulder injury. Thought there are no excuses?

Ryle deserved to win the game. BUT, where was the 3TD's victory and Blowout win I read about on this website for Ryle last week?

Again, he didn't pick soccer, he was INJURED, and was on the sidelines. That had nothing to do with the outcome anyway, as you can't kick it if it is a bad snap. And yes, Ryle went for 2 after thrir last TD to try and make it a 7 point game.

It was a bad snap, no fake. The regular is hurt, he was on the sidelines in shorts. After missing the first one they " chased the points" and went for 2 each time.

Not saying Ryle won't win, but there is NO WAY they win by 3 td's. Sooner or later the LARGE schools will have ro accept that the smaller schools in NKY can play with them.

Don't know where Miller is now, but she is definitely NOT playing VB for Dixie.

Flatrock, agree with what you are saying. As the old saying goes, you can do anything with statistics. By the way the last tme a team not in the top 3 at tourney time to win the region was 2005 when NCC was ranked 4th prior to the tourney.

I don't consider winning titles 10-20 years ago as qualifying as being a CURRENT power. Going back to 2000 is fine, but further back than that is ancient history. That's like saying UK men's team is a current power because they were outstanding in the late 90's. The teams mentioned in the post as current powers have won the LAST 5 titles, I think that was what was intended.

Just a thought on this matter of good coachs, as I "don't have a dog in this fight" as they say. However, I think you have to measure a coach's ability by wins, big time wins, wins against good teams, size of talent pool to choose from, and winning over a consistent number years. No questioning Fookes at Boone on these counts, but after her I think McDonald is a clearcut second at this time. Remember NCC is a Class A school, but play a BIG TIME schedule year in and year out, consistently win 20+ games, have won multiple Class A AND 9th region titles, beat big time programs around the state, and have done so for 10+ years. Can't ask much more than that.

Not that I'm "In the know" by any means, but the last time I talked with them they didn't give me the impression that was a possibility. Hopefully they just didn't know at that time or were not at liberty to say. What a great addition that would be, however. Maybe a campaign to add them could influence the Enquirer? What was that about the Easter Bunny. Anyway, it couldn't hurt to let them know how we feel. I for one, am going to call and write and let them know I won't accept less than we now get from the Post. Will the listen? Stranger things have happened. Let's try.

There are so many question marks about every team I think it is impossible to tell how things will shake out. Boone- Can they find a leader they apparently lacked last year. ND- Can they play well without the big girls who left. Holmes- Can they replace their point guard and get Webb to play hard all the time. Highlands- Can they overcome the lack of consistency they showed last year. NCC- Can they replace the points and rebounds Klei took with her. Connor- Must replace the seniors who left. Ludlow- Will their lack of a tough schedule do them in again. With all these questions I think it is real toss up and should provide for a very interesting season. Only question is with the Ky Post ceasing at year end will we even be able to find out who wins the games and who scored the points. We will sorely miss Terry Boemker, Jim Osbourn and crew. They always did a great job covering games. Ryan Ernst does a good job also, but we don't seem to get near te quantity of coverage from the Enquirer as the Post has given us.

I agree with your analysis. Very good insight onto the picure. I do have a problem with your comment about NCC not living up to their talent, though. They played as tough a schedule as anyone in the 9th region and still had a very good record. You must remember being a small school they just don't have the depth that all the other schools that are always in the hunt. They came within 2 points of making the region final for the 3rd time in 5 years last year, after finishing as state runner-up in the All A classic. Some insight into their postseason play: they got routed by Highlands and just got by Dixie, however Sandfoss played the last 3 weeks of the season with mono that the doctor said would have kept most kids out, and Klei was hurt during the regional to the point she didn't practice the last wek of the season. This is where the lack of depth killed tem, as they had no one to spell them. As for this year, I think Boone is still the team to beat. Their inside game could be awesome if they live up to expectations, and they have Bradley to get them the ball. They will need a leader as you say, but their size will difficult to deal with.

For NDA a lot will depend on how well Tierney recovers from her injury. they also will have to adjust to not having the 2 big girls to go to. They should get better as the season goes on. NCC could surprise a lot of teams, I wouldn't leave them out of the picture at all. I assume from your comments that Tom Szwick is not returning. Why would that be? Also, there seems to be a feeling in reading all of this that there is some discontent at Boone. Any insight that can be shared?

LN It is good to hear from a public school parent who realizes that parents, public or private, talk to each other. To think otherwise is ridiculous. I agree that a lot of public schools don't take the time and effort to extole the benefits of their schools, yet they don't want other private schools from doing this. If your public school really is the best choice for students TELL them why. Don't just expect they will attend and then complain when they don't. You make a number of other great points as to why public schools complain but do nothing about it. Congrats on being reasonable and seeing both sides of the story.

Agree completley. I'm sure the parents had as much to do wit it as rhe players. Everyone doesn't have to like all their teammates, just play as a team together. Noticed in one post no one showed up at a scheduled meeting set up by the school. Sounds like the "walkouts" don't want to discuss issue, just react. I say play with the girls that show up.

It can be stopped. I reffed for a number of years and the way to stop it in a scrimmage is to tell the person that one more word and you will stop the scrimmage until they leave. They did not pay to get in and most likely you are not getting paid to work the scrimmage. Just stick to your guns and stop the scrimmage if they continue. They will leave from embarrassment.

Agree completely. Great shooters are developed in the off season by shooting, shooting, and shooting more. I have known many great shooters and they all had tremendous off-season work ethics. There is not enough time during the season to practice shooting. Basketall is one of the very few sports you can practice the most fundemental aspect of the game by yourself. Coaches can correct flaws in form, but a player is the only who can make themselves better shooters by practicing.

Someone asked me today if I knew about fall sports being started a week later this year, including practice. This person was specifically interested in soccer, but I would suppose it would apply to football also. I do believe the state championships are a week later this year. The reasoning would be the extreme heat we had last year, and I think I heard a player may haved either died or was seriously overcome. Does anyone have any info on practice starting later for soccer, football, etc.?

The key word here is SCRIMMAGE. Anyone who really thinks they can draw any conclusions from these two teams in a pre-season scrimmage are really desparate for something to talk about Both coaches are too good to place any emphasis on winning, so you have the situation you mention.

Based on what several people have said there seems to be some truth to this, but WHY is this game any different than any other scrimmages in NKY in supposedly determining how these teams will play during the season? It doesn't make any sense at all. It's not like Dixie/NCC are huge rivals or anything. From everything I know the coaches and players get along fine, so what's the big deal?

I think this is a GROSS exagerration. I don't think that much emphasis is placed on a scrimmage by those who coach or play. NCC plays a number of big schools during the regular season and no one has ever brought this point up that I know of.
