True, those four seniors were extremely important to the program, for many years. I wouldn't say they don't return a lot though. Coming back are five of their top seven hitters and both of their two starting pitchers. If a couple of the JV (or even younger) players can step up, they can still make noise in the district! Don't forget, Bracken lost some seniors too. I say it's a lot more even in the 39th (with a improved St. Pat squad also) than people think.

I said in the St. Pat/Deming thread that it's hard to beat a team four times in the same year, and Hinson's boys did that. Augusta/St. Pat has been a knockdown, dragout everytime they've played the last three years (two district games come to mind), but the Saints proved a big point last night despite those two teams playing for the third time this year. I think, Reader's Digest version, is that St. Pat so far has gone against the odds twice in Mount Olivet (beating a team four times, beating a team three times ... I'm not saying they were underdogs or anything like that). I hate to predict (also see: jinx) another win, and I liked what Coach Hinson said last night about it's still Brossart's tourney until they get beat. I'm going green all the way on this one.

Good call, I forgot about Kyle Campbell. Haven't been able to see the 'Jackets play so far this year. I did give a lot of love to Clifton Willoughby during the regular season last year though, if that's any consolation.

True, Chris had 54 points against Pendleton County on Senior Night in 2004. Ronnie Lyons actually holds the Mason County record with 60 points at Bourbon County in 1970.

Sweet man. You know that you can't tell sarcasm on written type. Also...good dig on the "only following Mason County" statement. Keep in mind at my previous job I covered 26 high school teams. Aside from that, let's hope the Polar Bears act like their female counterparts and come out of a weak bottom bracket to the championship. THAT is not out of the realm of possibility.

Untrue. To quote Fred Hester, Mason County (in charge of keeping these counts), there were 4,004 at the Fieldhouse during the finals. That's most likely not counting those unpaid, which includes -- as people may sometimes forget -- two sections for each team's band.

I think St. Patrick is the favorite of this matchup. But it is REAL hard to beat the same team four times in the same season. It'll be a good one, for sure.

I'm going to have to go ahead and say that this is ridiculous. No high school team, especially one coached by Jay Fite, sandbags games so that their competition will take them more lightly. Ridiculous.

Sadly, quite the opposite. The Fieldhouse has such good attendance that even the teams that don't make it to region play get a share.

I completely agree with the mental aspect, and if you add in ... a bigger crowd, maybe they could feed off some noise to get some momentum, especially only down four. That's when things would get loud, at say, the Fieldhouse. That being said, it was definitely a shame to see the crowd discrepancy.

It would've been great to have ANY picture from this game in the local paper; then again, that would mean a photographer from said paper would've had to make the trip to Lexington. Not to mention a writer. Sad state of affairs that a legitimate state contender doesn't have any support from the town's local newspaper.

Good point. They had that chance last week when Scott County was struggling and Darius fouled out, but couldn't make the most of that opportunity. Against LexCath, they did. Setty was HUGE. And Miller does what good players do, took over when needed. Big statement from MC and O'Hearn after Catholic overcame a big lead the first time around. I'm with everyone else, I hope they can meet a third time at state.

I have to say, I CANNOT agree more, 1000 percent. I take absolutely nothing away from Chuck Hamilton or Matt Montavon. They are each fantastic game writers. It's just a shame that the coverage has had to suffer with a new change in leadership. Oh, and the reason I moved this thread to the boys' side is because the Ledger did not send a writer OR a photographer to Memorial Coliseum last night. This was a decision made from above, not by the writers themselves. Unbelievable.

For reference, this was something planned by parents, not by anyone involved with the school or athletics department. But yes, I get your point.

It's not "anti-rotation" that is the issue, it's more "anti-not-big enough." The way I take all of the threads concerning this change, no one cares that it is rotating gyms from Mason (unless they are enamored with the tradition, which is another part of the opinion altogether). Everyone is more up in arms that the tournament is changing gyms to one where it's possible that people will be turned away. To answer your #1, if things play out as the general opinion says it will, then there is the possibility of three scenarios playing out -- Mason-Clark, Mason-Montgomery or Clark-Montgomery -- either in the semis, finals, or both. Then, the gym will not be big enough (your #2). Notice none of three of these schools are NKY. Only from a purely selfish standpoint would I like it to stay at Mason each year of the district rotation (it's 10 minutes from my house). Bottom line is, if it's going to change annually for each district's vote on a four-year rotating basis, make sure the best-attended region tournament in the state is held in a facility big enough for all the fans wanting to watch.

I'm no 16th region expert, and I can't give any other contenders to the title of "best ever." But I will throw out this cliche: don't count your chickens. They are a great team so far this year, some 16 games in. But that leaves half a year to go, not to mention tournament play, which as we all know means one and done. If they don't make it out of region (or god forbid the districts), then obviously you can't mention them in a best ever thread. To me, a state title is the first thing that gets them into the conversation, and then you can start the debate against teams of the past. Seems to me this may be a bit too early to have a thread like this. Then again, that's just me.
