Ledger Indpendent's coverage of boy's basketball

Featured Replies

I can't speak for the enquirer but I can speak for the Ledger Independent out of Maysville. I am disappointed with it. The girls Class A is going on in Paris and some teams that are local were playing last night and I guess no one could find the time to cover the games. A little disappointed with that.

I have to say, I CANNOT agree more, 1000 percent.

I take absolutely nothing away from Chuck Hamilton or Matt Montavon. They are each fantastic game writers. It's just a shame that the coverage has had to suffer with a new change in leadership.

Oh, and the reason I moved this thread to the boys' side is because the Ledger did not send a writer OR a photographer to Memorial Coliseum last night. This was a decision made from above, not by the writers themselves.

Unbelievable.

And I know of all people, MCpapa will have an unbiased opinion here. Hope to hear it!

I think the Ledger - Independent does a fine job with local area sports. Schools should be responsible for calling the scores in. I understand that only a few can be at so many places. Keep up the good work .:dancingpa

Well i know first hand that Schools have called in stats and they still never get any press, I think that the Ledger has gone way down hill since they had a change in Positioning in the sports Dept. If i had to grade them i would give them a D- and that is giving them the Benefit of the Doubt........

I'll take your word for it , but it's hard to believe that it's not printed when called in. I Look forward to reading it every day and I enjoy whats there.

Especially when they wrote the article last year on the big party that was planned when Mason Co won the region and the finals hadn't been played yet....

I still can't believe they did that...

It is a changing world, a lot of papers no longer have the resources to cover everything they want (or should) cover.

I know the L-I has more than just Maysville to consider, but there's as much or more coverage of teams like Peebles and Lynchburg-Fairfield as there is of Kentucky teams.

NO L-I writers or photographers in Lexington last night in the LC-MC rematch is puzzling, to say the least (unconscionable at worst). Lexington television felt that it was a big enough game to TELEVISE. Heck, Terry lives in Mayslick; it's not that long of a drive for him. With a limited staff you have to pick and choose; I just can't fathom why this game was neither picked nor chosen.

And while we're on the subject of the L-I, what is the paper's obsession with something called The Southern Hills Career and Technical Center? Every time I turn around they have a huge picture and an article about their most recent food drive or some such thing. No, it's not boys basketball coverage-related, unless one considers that coverage of the SHCTC could be pre-empting appropriate sports coverage.

I believe that I saw Jeff at the indoor track meet today taking pictures, so I look forward to Monday's edition.

I agree with mcpapa. There is alot of coverage of Ohio basketball. I know the LI circulates there. But, there are more KY subscribers. About 2 years ago the Ohio games would get most of the writers while the KY scores were just a paragraph summary that they made up from the call in score.

Had to laugh at this. I do feel rather well-versed on the happenings at Southern Hills. Although in the Ledger's defense, I think it's all article/photo submitted.;)

Being fairly close to the situation (and we'll leave it at that), I'm usually one to defend the Ledger coverage when warranted, however, I'll also give criticism where it's due, and the coverage has admittedly been garbage for the last few weeks. While I hate to tiptoe around the issue, I'll just say it's kind of a situation where the writers have their hands tied. I wouldn't rule out a lot of turnover fairly soon.

To respond to a few comments as best I can:

I probably have more first hand knowledge than anyone and no game results are ever left out that get in before deadline. The only exceptions I can think of are a few cell phone calls that have been broken up and the occasional fax from manchester that cuts off half of the stats.

It was a "news" story. Really, at the time, nobody in Ledger's sports department could believe they did it either.

Speechless. Making a writer who already had their stuff packed to go to Lexington stay home and write it from TV because help was needed in the office is at best unconscionable. Take my word, said writer was more upset about the pathetic story that had to go in the paper than any Mason County fan could be.

Now these are a couple I don't get. If any area of the coverage really suffers when they're shorthanded, it's Ohio hoops. There have been something like 3 ohio games in there this year, all of which were pretty big: Georgetown/Ripley (local rivalry and G'Town's first game following state championship), Manchester/Peebles (up and coming team vs. one with a freshman averaging 24 ppg) and Eastern/Georgetown (probably best two girls teams in the area). Any other games mentioned have just been a matter of scores getting called in.

They made the writer stay at the office and write the story off the TV broadcast???? Wow.

It is what it, in fact, is.

I second that.

One of the two biggest games in the state, and the local newspaper doesn't cover it ... unbelievable.
