Let's see - Mason County girls play the #1-ranked team in the Commonwealth, followed by one of the boys' "mark-your-calendar" games, televised from Memorial Coliseum, and help was needed in the office? Just out of curiosity, did the LI send anyone to Hawaii? If so, was the yearly travel budget exhausted?

 

Oddly enough, our little subdivision has quite the connection to the LI sports department. Fray grew up a few houses down from the mcpapa family; my son was in his graduating class. Tony lives a few houses in the other direction. Makes me feel a "connection" for some odd reason.

I was afraid that the help was needed to sift through the Comment Line calls about the 10th Region venue.

 

As we have discussed before, I'm not interested in bashing the LI just to be bashing; I'd like for the local newspaper to be a source of community pride. Maysville may be one of the smaller towns that is blessed with a daily paper.

 

But SOMEBODY has to get to Lexington on Friday night.

Covering all the local sports that are going on at the same time can be challenging. Someone is always asking why aren't you covering this game or that game. Not enough room or time to cover all games. But, you have to cover the games that are HUGE in local sports.

I tried to call in the boxscores from the MCIT JV tourney just to give the JV some love, and Mr Hopwood was really not interested. I invest a lot of my time calling in scores to all papers and I try to take care of the LI. I have had great workmanship with others at LI (Matt, Fraysure, Chuck, Elden etc) but Mr Hopwood attitude just kinda got under my skin. When Mason girls played Ashland a couple of week ago, late on Friday I did not get it in Saturday paper. I meant to call on Sunday but forget since it was not gameday. LI ran a little piece about the game with no boxscore. The LI people that I have the scores for both the boys & girls and all they had to do was call me to get the boxscore in the paper. That was the least they could do with me making every effort to get all the boxscores in the paper. Also people who do basketball research needs the boxscores and not some generic article. And I realize they are journalism majors but please, please make sure the boxscore add up correctly. I am sure you guys had a math class somewhere along the line!!!!!!!!

I remember when we had two newspapers in Maysville, the Ledger and the Independent and got great reports on sports and area games.They were so easy to read because we had actual box scores and they never missed a game in the Lewis ,Mason, Fleming, Robertson, Southern Ohio and Bracken co area. There weren't large write ups about the games but always showed the box score. EXAMPLE: Game in 1958--Maysville vs Minerva

I guarantee you it has less to do with who's operating the Sports Dept. at the paper than it does those writers' bosses.

Extremely POOR coverage of area sports for the Ledger-Independent. I realize resources determine what can and cannot be done to cover the area sports, but in past years I am sure the money was about the same and the paper did a much better job covering the area.

 

You have to love what you do and go above and beyond the call of duty regardless of what the circumstances are. The staff at the Ledger used to do that, I don't see it now!

This one couldn't possibly be more wrong.

 

You have certain writers, as mentioned earlier, who want to be out covering games because being out around the sport, the kids and the coaches is the one part of the job they truly love, yet are forced to stay in to do somebody else's job. You have writers covering games for free on their day off just because they love it and because they take pride in the quality of the coverage. Unfortunately, said writers all too often get nothing but negativity not only at work but on places like here, all because of things the writers themselves have no control over.

 

I'm going to leave this one alone now, because I've just about reached the extent of what I'm willing to say on a public forum. If anyone has a real interest or concern about the sports coverage, I'd be more than happy to talk by PM.

Especially when they wrote the article last year on the big party that was planned when Mason Co won the region and the finals hadn't been played yet....:lol:

I agree there's something amiss with the paper, maybe the new office heads will change their way of thinking after a days and go back to the way things used to be, being from M.O. we considered LI a local paper.

Did you catch the article on page 3 of today's L-I about the new sports editor? Didn't mention anything about being microwave-impaired or anything...

 

Here's hoping that there will at least be live coverage of the marquee games.

I have to say, I CANNOT agree more, 1000 percent.

 

I take absolutely nothing away from Chuck Hamilton or Matt Montavon. They are each fantastic game writers. It's just a shame that the coverage has had to suffer with a new change in leadership.

 

Oh, and the reason I moved this thread to the boys' side is because the Ledger did not send a writer OR a photographer to Memorial Coliseum last night. This was a decision made from above, not by the writers themselves.

No disrespect at all to Chuck or Matt. Both men are very good at what they do, but its a shame that others are holding them back. I personally know that scores have been called in and not posted in the paper. What kind of service is this? I was thinking about subscribing to the Ledger for this basketball season, glad I didnt now. I would be very disappointed.

 

This has been a paper in circulation and if things dont change it will be out quick. I have heard of several people locally that are going to cancel their subscriptions.
