Seems like with all the complaints listed on this thread that Mr Hopwood has little interest in local sports and maybe needs to be replaced . :ylsuper:

We know have our own newspaper here in Roberrtson County called The Robertson County Review and I have to give Kudos to former Ledger Sports reporter Wade Holland on the job he gives covering our sports teams here.

To follow up, I searched in vain this morning to see a story, a box score, a score, a mere mention of Bishop Brossart's thrilling win in their Class A tourney win vs. LCA yesterday in today's Ledger-Independent. Nothing, nada, zilch, zero. In fact, if one had to rely solely on the L-I for sports news, one would not know that there was a Class A tournament in progress. Not a word.

 

Now, I understand that Brossart is not a traditional 10th region school, and that perhaps Alexandria is not considered part of the newspaper's coverage area. I understand that it was important to get coverage of the West Union Lady Dragons' 42-point loss to Peebles; this story was also included on today's online version of the paper.

 

I guess my question is just how much research is involved in getting at the very least a line score from each of the All-A games; and especially the score of the game involving the 10th Region representative.

I watched for the results of the games on Lex tv last night switching from one channel to another and they only gave a few scores and one of those were wrong (The Rose Hill score) of the Class A tournament held in Richmond. There were 8 games played down there yesterday and only 2 reported. Don't understand it. I think it lags everywhere .Channel 27 in Lex does the best on reporting scores.

Not to single out mcpapa here, but one of the things that always makes me laugh when there is coverage of a game with minimal interest (which is putting it mildly in the case of Peebles/West Union girls) is that people don't consider the schedule of games that day.

 

People act like every mediocre game that's covered is at the expense of a Mason County game or something. As if the writers at the Ledger are sitting there saying, "WOO-HOO! West Union girls AGAIN!" As for the night in question, it was going to be Peebles blowing out WU, Eastern or Georgetown blowing out non-local teams, or nothing at all.

 

Sometimes the schedule plays out well and sometimes it doesn't. Unfortunately, this was a week where there wasn't much choice but to do three WU girls games, two of which were the only games between local teams and one of which was the only game in the area PERIOD. Combine those with Bracken/Scott boys on Tuesday and it's a pretty ugly group of games. Then Friday you end up with more good local games than you can cover. Unfortunately, that's just how it works sometimes.

 

As for Brossart, not only are they not in the coverage area, but not even close. While it wouldn't be a bad idea IMO to run a final score to at least acknowledge the game (or for that matter the AP's list of finals from around the state) anything more for a non-local team seems a bit much. The All A finals are probably worthy of something regardless of who's in them but I don't see making any kind of special effort for Brossart. It's important to note that the Ledger obviously doesn't have the budget or staff to cover other teams from around the state like the Herald Leader or Courier Journal and doesn't pretend to. It's hard enough to keep up with the 20 or whatever local teams from OH and KY, and at some point, the call just has to be made that if a couple people in Maysville care that much about what Brossart (or whoever) did, they know where to find it.

I would think that if only for the reason that Brossart is the 10th Region Representative to the All "A" and pretty much got here by beating St. Patrick, there might actually be some interest in the Maysvile area.

I personally would rather read about Brossart, Harrison Co., Clark Co. or any other 10th region team than West Union girls. Come on lets get serious now. How many people that read the LI do you think actually cares anything at all about West Union girls game, I would say it would be less than 2%. It's never been great but it is a lot worse now days. The only time Lewis County gets any coverage is if they are playing St. Pat., Fleming or Bracken Co. It's a shame, but you just keep putting those Ohio girls games in there and I'll keep buying the Ashland Independent to read about Lewis Co.:madman:

I agree with that and I have always had an interest in Lewis Co sports and their scores haven't been in there for years. It could be the fault of the Lewis Co people in charge of reporting the games for not calling them in also. I'd say the Lewis Co scores haven't been in there in the past 20 years. Kidwell always has a good report on games played in Lewis Co in the Lewis Co Herald. (Maybe needs a box score though. ) We get both the Maysville Ledger and the Lewis Co Herald. The best report I get on sports is the Lex Herald on line about midnight or the following morning.:ylsuper:

Nice to see you apparently responded without actually reading the post because you completely proved my point from the first sentence.

 

Never did I say anybody cares about West Union girls. I'm not going go over the whole thing again, but basically, the nights you get coverage of a 3-17 girls team against a non-local team, it's because that's all there was to choose from, not because the Ledger staff is sitting around saying "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if we gave the shaft to [insert team here]."

 

The whole point of the post was that there weren't any other games in the area those nights, but it's always funny how some people will still find a way to complain that somehow these games are taking coverage away from their team, whether they're playing or not. Thanks for proving it for me.

First of all, I agree with you, the day to day sports coverage by the L-I should focus on the Maysville area schools, and certainly NOT Brossart or any of the 37th District teams.

 

However, in this instance, Brossart representing the 10th Region in the "A" State Tournament, and especially with beating Lexington Christian and competing with UHA, I do think that is worthy of note.

 

Perhaps Chris Owens, Nick Anderson, Coach Hinson and the rest of his team might have a passing interest in how the team that they nearly beat is faring in the "A" State tournament.

 

The Kentucky Post is gone! Too bad, we're going to miss it. But you are right, even at that we will get our sports coverage of NoKy teams and events (what little there is) from the Enquirer, or other sources such as ICN-6, or the Community Newpapers.
