This was a competitive and well played game between two evenly matched teams. Brian Hewitt was MVP and deservedly so. Both teams played the night before but despite this, executed very well. Lasalle subsituted five for five all night long while LexCath also substituted liberally as usual. The final margin was close to the biggest lead either team had.

Not a pretty game. LexCath built a 13 point lead in the first half but CovCath whittled it down to only 9 at the half. CovCath controlled the third period and surpassed the Knights with a good press and excellent half court defense. The Knights turned the ball over numerous times and CovCath led at the end of three quarters by 4 points. The fourth quarter was the worst with both teams committing a lot of fouls and neither team leading by more than 4. LexCath eventually caught the Colonels with a two pointer by Novosel. The final four points were made by Hewitt, a pair of free throws and a layup at the buzzer. Hewitt led the Knights with 21 points. The fourth quarter was mostly fouls and free throws.

LexCath won 58-54.

LexCath rotates about 12 guys normally so missing the above two shouldn't hurt the overall flow that much. Not having the main goto guy available in a close game will be the main problem plus Burbage gets a lot of runout baskets. LexCath is taking better care of the ball than earlier in the season but still needs work in this area. Looking on the positive, this gives Catholic another chance to win without acouple of their main players.

The visits are for football I believe. I don't know about the scheduling details.

Reid Brown will miss the game as will Cornell Burbage. Both are scheduled for college visits. LexCath will be without their biggest inside guy and their quickest perimeter player. It should still be a good game and I think the Knights can still win if they take care of the ball.

I don't think South plays defense as well as SC and LexCath. I'll go with Mason in a squeaker.

The NC State quarterbacks coach was at tonights LexCath basketball game sitting with Justins parents who I understand assured him he was still firmly in the NC State fold.

This game was never in doubt as LexCath extended a 10 point first quarter lead to 21 by the half. In the third quarter Mason showed some of the intensity they are noted for and managed to cut the lead to about 16 but it was a case of too little too late as LexCath went into a slight stall in the fourth quarter and regained control of the game. I thought Mason looked much better in the second half than the first and I think it was due to matching and sometimes surpassing LexCath's hustle. Number 21 for Mason seemed to get all the rebounds and carried a good bit of the scoring load too. On this night though (Homecoming) LexCath was not to be denied.

LexCath has been rolling of late but Mason is most dangerous when taken lightly. Considering their recent history, I doubt if LexCath takes the Royals lightly. I'm thinking a 5-10 point win is in the cards for the Knights.

It's harder to gauge LexCath's position in the region because they don't play many of the principle players until the District tournament but I base my opinion on the fact that they seem able to play fast or slow, go large or quick, and have adapted well in recent in-game situations such as the two stated above. LexCath also has shown steady improvement whereas some of the others have been more erratic. There of course are six weeks left in the regular season and things may change dramatically in that time but right now I'll go with LexCath and SC at the top.

I think by the time its over Scott County and LexCath will be the class of the region. I thought when LCA went to the halfcourt game they may have found the Knight's achilles heal but they made the adjustment after a few shaky moments. For what it's worth, I think LexCath played very well against Ashland considering the intensity of the game the night before.

LCA almost got run off the court early when the Knights raced to a 17 point lead in the first half mostly on runout baskets off the LCA press. After halftime LCA dropped the press and managed to whittle away the LexCath lead to about 6 with some good threepoint shooting, but the Knights settled into a nice halfcourt offense and eventually rebuilt the lead to 22 before the JVs entered the game leading to the final margin.

Paul Rains might be a good fit since he runs a similar offense and has had program building experience. His seniors are leaving and it will be hard for him to maintain his momentum at LCA next year. Don't know him or if he is interested but it would seem a good fit. I think they will hire someone from within the program myself though. The recent experience in basketball may have taught the powers that be, that it is better to promote than looking elsewhere if you already have qualified people inhouse.

If you're worried about availability, you need not. I've been to the Civic Center half a dozen times for numerous such events and it has never been half full. I don't think there were two hundred people there for the recent South Laurel vs Beechwood game. Great place to watch a game though, seats are close to the court and have great viewing angles.

Haney never pulled his starters until about a minute left in the game. That statement is only true if you count the top 10 or twelve as starters. Haney rotates a lot of players in and out, at least he did in the second half which was all I saw.

This was my first time seeing both teams this year. LCA won this game because they worked harder for it and more importantly they hit their threes in the second half which allowed them to build an 11 point lead halfway through the fourth quarter. Lafayette seemed to wake up then and began feeding their 6'8" center who just about brought them back. Lipka hit a couple freethrows with six seconds left to seal the greatest win in LCA basketball history to date.
