Scott County is the most talented team I've seen this year. Mason County has lost four games but was close enough to win each of them with a little luck. Scott County will be focused coming off a loss so they won't be overlooking Mason (that would be stupid). I'm tempted to pick Mason but will go with Scott in what will be a really good game won by no more than three points.

Ashland took very good care of the ball and did not try to run. Catholic was content to trade baskets as long as they were in the lead. Apparently Ashland has improved quite a bit. Also LexCath does play to the level of the competition which is why their record is only 9-5. The record will probably be 16-6 by the time the playoffs start.

Justin Burke hit a couple freethrows with 10.5 seconds left to give Catholic a three point lead. Walls missed an uncontested three at the other end. Well played physical game as usual between these two.

The 11th is full of good teams but Lafayette and Scott County appear to be a step ahead of the rest. Is this the time they separate themselves further from the pack?

Scott County has been possibly the states most impressive team to this point. LexCath has barely played above 500 ball. The game is at LexCath but will this be a blowout for SC or will Catholic pull off the upset like they did last year? Both teams have played competitively but lost against a common opponent, Brentwood Academy. I personally like this Catholic team more than any since the 2000 state runnerups. I think Catholic will win a squeaker in round one.

I am neutral on this. I usually attend one session at EKU and probably wouldn't if it was moved to NKU but I appreciate the historical perspective and think the states second largest metro area deserves to be able to host such an event. Overall attendance would probably be hurt though since many of the A schools are in very rural locations.

Maybe a move to Louisville could be tried when UL builds their new arena.

OK if you like watching games from behind the backboard where two thirds of the seats are. Of course attendance was so bad one could actually get decent seats there in years past.

Another year of eligibilty for Justin Burke.

Salsman is developing the depth to wear teams down aka Pitino. But when a team stays close late in the game, it works against the Knights because they don't really have a leader to take charge because of the substitution patterns. Catholic has gotten early leads in most of their games but hasn't been able to maintain them at crunch time. The third quarter has been their nemesis to date. I also think teams are getting used to the press and making adjustments at half time. We may need to use it more expeditiously. I personally enjoy watching this bunch more than any since the 2000 group.

This looked like a blowout early as LexCath roared to a 20+ lead in the first half but X. hit a couple threes right before the half ended to get back in the game. X. spent the second half whittling into the LexCath lead until with 3.6 seconds left, LexCath only led by one. The Tigers inbounded the ball and got it across the halfcourt line under heavy pressure when #35 the center took a 30+ foot heave that hit the back of the rim and stuck before gently dropping in.

Day carried Leslie County with 24 points. Morgan had 6.

Leslie County could have won this game if they were able to hit free throws better. The game wasn't as close as the final score. Leslie County showed grit especially in the final period when they made a game of it.

Travel time was the only advantage for HC. Certainly the crowd didn't favor either team.

LexCath had an easy win over winless Blythewood in the opening round for both teams in the Chick-fil-a Classic in Columbia. Catholic advances to play top ranked (Alabama class 5A) S. R. Butler today.

Is Chris Hawkens number 55 at HC? I remember him being a load on defense especially.

Congrats to Drew. By the way, Tanner Doss, who was backup to Justin Burke and brother to Wyoming backup qb Jacob Doss last year, is also at the AFA. He probably will be a defensive back though.

Wesvols, I enjoyed talking to some Brentwood fans at the LexCath game including the Vandy coach. Were you part of that group? I sat in fron of them.

Bob Sphires system at LexCath and the Horsemen requires an exceptional quarterback. He has been able to find/develop kids to fill this need in recent years. If he is able to continue to do this, I see the trend continuing. If he isn't, then he will need to adapt his system to the players available. Like many other Catholic schools there seems to be a lot of good talent available to form the basis for a solid team year in and year out. As long as Sphire is coach at LexCath, I don't see them falling too far from the top ten. Whether they can make a Highlands/Boyle type dominance doesn't seem likely yet but something on the order of CovCath's success seems doable.

I think Burkes numbers were hurt because the defense kept taking the ball away from BG and scored quickly a couple times, thus keeping the LexCath offense off the field more than would normally happen. As for the LexCath defense, it's been most effective against teams like BG and Highlands which like to put pressure outside thus playing to LexCath's strength on defense, fast linebackers and defensive backs. BG had running success up the middle where LC is small but you have to nix it up some when the D is stacked to stop this. I think BG's problem in this matchup was that the LexCath speed trumped the BG muscle and frustrated the heck out of them. Not much BG could do as I see it.

I know Highlands had an outstanding D last year. How did it compare to this years' Bowling Green defense? I also think BG runs a similar offense as Highlands. Overall Highlands has faster players but BG has big fast players. H and BG both played the LexCath offense straight up, not blitzing or anything, just trying to cover the receivers. Burke had a subpar game against both teams this year but in the Highlands game his injury seemed to effect his accuracy. He overthrew open receivers on several occasions which is unusual for him. Of course I think LexCath would win such a matchup.
