THe light doesn't matter in high school. If you remember, there was a similar situation in S16 a few years back on Friday. Kid hits shot that TV replays later showed was AFTER the horn, but BEFORE the light. The refs got that one right as the horn governs in high school. The light has no bearing. You will notice they got smart after that at S16. The light isn't even connected on the backboard.

Keep in mind that Kentucky schools are in the second year of contract cycle. May not be a vast conspiracy here, just maybe nobody was open at the right time. Also, this is the year (2008), that Ohio's schedule and Kentucky's schedule are not necessarily lined up (Ohio does something unique in setting their dates for play). So it should align itself by 2009 from what my coach told me.

There is a huge difference in Maryland (and Delaware and a few others). Those organizations are entities and departments within their State Departments of Education. That's why they are basically public only, because that's all their department truly regulates. Thus, the necessity to have other associations within the state. New York has several within the state, Mississipppi has a totally separate private school association (but before people jump up and down, they basically always have had separate), and Texas has four associations. The NFHS only has one member per state, but the others can come along to rules meetings, etc. So it truly is a mixed bag of options throughout the country. In the Northeast, athletics is only a small piece of the state office puzzle. If you look at their web sites, most of them are actually Principals Associations, so athletics is just a small function. But a majority throughout the country are still one association, public and private, along with the natural in-fighting that comes from different missions, compositions and purposes of all of those schools.

Rowan was fairly solid in my memory too. But the rest of 16 wasn't. It's been a bit of lull.

Best my memory serves, the most notable of these district losers to state final winners was the 79 Lafayette team. With a lineup of Dirk and Kenny Minnifield, Tony Wilson, Junior Johnson, Kurt Rose and a few others and coached by Jock Sutherland, they were one of the best high school teams in Lexington history. But if I remember right, their only loss of the year (or one of the very few) was a district tournament finals loss to Tates Creek when a left handed kid named Montgomery hit everything he threw toward the basket.

Incorrect. you haven't done anything illegal until you put it back down. by rule, high school and college. common mistake by people who don't know the actual rules.

At least you are consistent in your opinion. Don't let geography get in the way. The maps are still on their web site. Other than the OBVIOUS Jenkins move that should have been made, what do you do?

One clarification Ram. You can't have 7 on 7 or anything school based until school is out (if the team is together or the coaches are there).

It's not an "in favor" or not. The schedules are based on corresponding dates put out by the NFHS and the KHSAA. Since the number of days in a year does not divide by 7, every once in a while, schools have a "rollover" year. That let's you basically catch up for losing a day each year (two in leap years). That school year is the 2008-2009 school year. If you look, you will notice all the sports starting five days later than the 2007-2008 date, due to the rollover. With that the schools did last fall (eliminating the bye week, playing 10 games in 10 weeks), the finals won't be as late starting in 2009. At least that's what KHSAA has communicated.

Be careful looking through those trees, there might be a forest. If you look at it, the rotation KEEPS St. X and T from playing each year. If it were true west to east like the other classes, with no rotation, they would be bracketed to possibly play in finals EVERY year.

My guess is for them to "get what they wanted", would be for more public district and county schools to have an opportunity to enter the playoffs for a long enough period to where they had the fire and determination of the tradition rich private and independent programs in the state. Face it, forget about any other enrollment arguments, that's not for this forum, but those closely knit independent districts and legacy driven private programs have been successful for so long, it has become expected, and that challenge motivates and drives the kids. For some the newer public school success, there seems to at first be a questioning of "how the heck did we get here" and then maybe if they can hold on a few years, they do what Boyle did and refine a fine tradition. But this new system, as I see it, will ensure that all of the schools (or nearly all), keep playoff participation opportunites so that they aren't solely saved for the tradition rich programs of all types. But that's just a guess, who knows.

More than that, as I remember reading, football was (and still is but only in a few cases), the only sport where you don't have to win a game to get in postseason. In every other sport, you can play the regular season, and you get to start over in district play (or region in some sports). In this way, almost every football team can at least get to the playoffs. It truly appears to be a very fast growing trend nationwide so some of us 40-something types have some mental adjusting to do.

A stretch at the absolute best, unless it can be documented that the Board of Education actually paid those dues. Your school taxes go to the Board office unless the system has changed.

To help you with your concern, I looked at their web site. This link http://www.khsaa.org/football/playoffpairings.pdf appears to tell you region numbers. If they matter. My original point still remains. Since football is realigned on a regular basis, and schools, classes and regions change on a regular basis, there is no continuity to the term "region" and it is an antiquated and outdated term giving someone only some false sense of geographic pride or statistics base. In sports with relatively little change in alignments, it is probably much more valid. Just one opinion and I respect yours as well.

My understanding is that it is a private non-profit, funded totally by ticket sales from events and then the schools pay dues that goes to pay for catastrophic insurance. There has never been a tax appropriation for the KHSAA.

That's exactly as I remember hearing the discussion. Several key schools tired ot the path to the finals always being blocked by the same schools. So with the new, now two year old rotation, at least some people have gotten a shot at late season practice, third and fourth round play, that never got that before. That eventually, if given time, leads to some parity. If you don't believe it, look at what is happening in college football. I can remember years ago when people screamed that there were too many bowl games, things were being watered down, etc. But funny thing is that football didn't die because of it. It actually has seen an explosion in growth. And more teams getting more and more practices (three and four weeks of bowl prep per year), have led to more parity than ever before. It is a tried and true strategy that works. But it does take time.

It doesn't matter. They won the region championship. Period. Get over it.

It probably is all about marketing. A new expanded system. A one-time shot at giving something a theme rather than just "the Kentucky come see all our finals at one site weekend".

Wonder who is paid out of state tax dollars that is involved in athletics. Don't think anyone at KHSAA is.
