TheLegends64 Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Is anyone is favor of the new starting date for the 2008 high school season. I think it is August 29, 2008. The playoffs start November 14, 2008 and the state championship will be December 12, 2008. I hope I'm correct for all of the dates. I'm not a fan of the late start date. Is this because of the scheduling conflicts will U or L? I liked starting the season early August 15 and ending the last weekend of November and not getting into basketball season.
UKNCFAN Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 I'm not a fan neither of late start dates. If you have a lot of football players that play basketball to they dont get very much transition time or any time off at all.
Jeepman Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 It may be because of the heat we had last year. I just wish they would start the games later in the evening instead of moving the date back. But what do I know.

Hit Catch Throw Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 I agree. A 8:30pm start makes a big difference. Heck, I wish we were playing in January. We could play 2 more games. Every body loves football. Yes they could start the games later. Shoot for my goodness Its Friday night in America. To watch football we could stay up till 12:00. anyway.:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:
refinstripes Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I like the late start, reduction of heat and teams to get more practice time prior to the season.
scheat40 Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I like the late start, reduction of heat and teams to get more practice time prior to the season. I definitely agree with you
footballfever Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I like the late start, reduction of heat and teams to get more practice time prior to the season. You can work around the heat but thats 7 full weeks of practice after dead period and prior to 1st game and 3 1\2 weeks prior to dead period. Thats ALOT of practice time.
Jumper_Dad Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I like starting later at night early in the season, but even with late starts the heat can still be suffocating at 9:00-9:30 at night. Still much better than playing while the sun is still out at 7:30 however. Bowl games IMHO still have the biggest issues with heat with having to in most cases play two games back to back. Last years Correll Bowl at Somerset ended after 3:00 am due to late start for heat and forty minute weather delay.
Hamilton Joe Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I like the late start. Thats when football was intended to begin, somewhere around Labor Day. I think the season should be wrapped up by Thanksgiving Weekend. To many teams qualify for the playoffs. I think only 2 teams (1st and 2nd Place in their district) should qualify for the playoffs. Teams with losing records shouldn't go to the playoffs IMO. Far too many 1st and 2nd round blowouts. Lets quit rewarding mediocrity or even worse. Reward teams who had good seasons and things would be a lot better.

It's not an "in favor" or not. The schedules are based on corresponding dates put out by the NFHS and the KHSAA. Since the number of days in a year does not divide by 7, every once in a while, schools have a "rollover" year. That let's you basically catch up for losing a day each year (two in leap years). That school year is the 2008-2009 school year. If you look, you will notice all the sports starting five days later than the 2007-2008 date, due to the rollover. With that the schools did last fall (eliminating the bye week, playing 10 games in 10 weeks), the finals won't be as late starting in 2009. At least that's what KHSAA has communicated.
