State Tournament Question

Featured Replies

I'm pretty sure, that in 1981 Simon Kenton lost to Connor in the district Championship. They then went on to win the State Tournament.

I'm sure it's been done, but who are some of the others that have done this?

SK won the districts in '81. WV had the game won but SK pulled it out in OT.

Ok...was given some bad info I guess. Still curious though, to know how many district runner-ups have won State.

I don't think that the WV/SK game was the district championship game. Once WV was beat I think their season was done. That's why it was so dramatic. If SK had lost that game their season would've been done. I don't remember who SK played in the district finals. It very much could've been Conner, but if it was I'm pretty sure they beat them but I could be wrong about that.

I was told that Connor beat SK that year in the finals.

You are correct, that wasn't the final. You are correct, that would take away all the drama since winners and runnersup advance.

Best my memory serves, the most notable of these district losers to state final winners was the 79 Lafayette team. With a lineup of Dirk and Kenny Minnifield, Tony Wilson, Junior Johnson, Kurt Rose and a few others and coached by Jock Sutherland, they were one of the best high school teams in Lexington history. But if I remember right, their only loss of the year (or one of the very few) was a district tournament finals loss to Tates Creek when a left handed kid named Montgomery hit everything he threw toward the basket.
