This is a topic for the College Board, but word on the street has it they are going to renovate the old one and stay put. The first step is supposed to happen this Spring which is to get rid of the 25 year old Astro Turf. It's been the cause of a lot of injuries over the last several years because more and more High School programs are using the newer Sports Turf and the kids aren't use to the harder surface. :ylsuper: Congratulations Brad! :ylsuper: :ylsuper: Good Luck as a Flyer! :ylsuper:

I got one for ya! How about a field that is: *350+ down the right field line and only 225 down the left field line. *Has a very tall net (estimate 100 ft. tall) in left field that extends up the back of the football stadium bleachers and then up the light poles for the football field. Thus, the view outside left field is the back of the football stadium bleachers. *It has an extra foul pole just left of power alley that helps support the net. If you hit a ball over the net between this pole and the foul pole, it is a ground rule double not a home run. *There is an eight foot tall concrete wall down both the left and right field lines. *The outfield doubles as the parking lot for the football stadium in the fall. *The visitor bleachers are only two rows high. It's a site to be seen, but only once. If you have to.

I know measuring the 60 is a universally accepted principal in the coaching ranks and I agree you have to have some standard distance to measure for comparison of players, IJMO but I think this is flawed. It's flawed in that when players 60 times are measured, it's in a straight line from start to finish. With the exception of an outfielder run for a catch, when does a baseball player ever run 60 yds straight? The 60 yd run from Home to 2B has a funny 90 degree bend in it. Remember As a coach when I held tryouts I always required 2 measured times: 1) A timed run from Home to 1B and; 2) A timed run from Home to 2B. I did both with a signal caller at 1B so the kid had to read something to know if it was a double or a single. In other words, the player would NOT know before he left Home if he was going to 1B or 2B. This would simulate a more accurate in game situation were he had to read either the first base coach or the hit, to know if he should take 2B or run through 1B to try to beat the throw. I saw a lot of times measured this way that would be considered terrible in comparison to a straight 60 yd time. Some from a few kids who blew the doors off of a straight 60 yd dash time. Like I said, It's just my opinion.

One field that has had tremendous improvements done to it over the last five years or so, is Eastern High School, in Jefferson Co. They have: 1. Built a three foot high brick wall behind home plate that extends from dugout to dugout. 2. Increasing the distance from home plate to the new wall 3. Added warning tracks al the way around the field. 4. Improved both the infield and outfield grasses, which included adding a grass infield. 5. Rebuilt both dugouts. 6. Built a new concession stand. 7. Built a stadium bleacher section directly behind home plate. 8. Replaced all the old dilapidated bleachers on the home and visitor side. 9. Replaced and increased the back stop netting for better protection to the fans. 10. Upgraded the lighting. It was already pretty good, it just needed some dark spots lit up. 11. Added gravel to their grass field parking lot. I'm sure I'm missing some other improvements they have made. All of this was done through fund raising events and Bingo’s. (Sounds like this public school has learned a thing or two from us Catholics.) :laugh: The bottom line is, it is now one of the premier fields in Jefferson County. Maybe even in the State. Definitely should be in the top 25.

Just for clarification, a Varsity Head Coach can be a Head Coach for a summer team, but not during the KHSAA Dead Period? At that time they must turn over their coaching responsibilities to a parent during the 2 week dead period. They can then return to the team and be the Head Coach through the fall ball season.

STRIKE3, I'd like some clarification on this subject. I've always heard that the High School Coaches couldn't be the Head Coach or Manager for the summer team. They are strictly forbidden during the dead period, but are also limited outside the dead period. What's the skinny here?

It all boils down to "PRIORITIES". If your priority is vacation and your sons priority is baseball, then you need to compromise. Either, 1) You go on vacation, leave him behind with another team members parents and miss all his games that week, or; 2) You stay home, forgo your vacation and take in every pitch, every out and every victory or defeat. If your priority is baseball and your sons priority is vacation. Then I call in to question, "Does he really want to be playing Baseball or is he playing because YOU want him to be playing baseball?" Tough question? You bet. But it's reality. Go on vacation. I'm one of the lucky few who's priority is baseball and so is my sons. Has this ever been discussed in our house? You bet it has! My question has always been, "What takes the higher priority: Baseball or partying with your buds for one week?" As long as the answer is baseball we stay home. We watch a lot of baseball. We take vacation in other times of the year, outside of baseball season. All the while remembering he won't be with us after High School and IF he's lucky enough to play at the next level we won't be able to see as many of his games as we do right now. The bigger question here, "Does your son plan to play baseball at the next level?" If the answer is yes, then he better get use to playing during Spring Break. That's when colleges (ALL LEVELS) are in the height of their seasons. What college coach is going to let a player take off for Spring Break? NONE! You have to get your PRIORITIES straight and the time to do it is NOW! Not when spring break rolls around. That's not fair to that kid that was on the bubble who gets cut on the last day of cuts. The kid who would have made the sacrifice to stay home for Spring Break to play for his TEAM!

The "Boys of Summer" better bundle up for their first couple days of practice/tryouts. Cause it's gunna be COOOOOOLLLDDD! But I'm sure this'll keep'em warm: PLAY BALL! :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

I think Shelby County's new fields (Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Concession Stand and Restrooms) that just opened 2 or 3 years ago, is one of the nicest I've seen in this part of the State. They put a lot of money into that place. It's natural grass and it is very well maintained. I only hope the put together a good endowment fund to keep it looking that good into the future.

:thumb: It's turf grass; not natural grass, with natural dirt around home plate and the pitchers mounds and dirt colored turf grass down the base paths and the infield. There won't be many homeruns hit out of this park! If there is, the kid will likely get drafted out of High School and never make it to college. It's 340 down the lines and 405 in Center field. Outfielders will need to run a 4.5 - 40 or better to cover that much ground in a timely fashion. :jump: Opening day is Monday, March 26, @ 5:30 PM, against Meade Co. Only 46 Days from today!

KHSAA will not allow anyone to schedule a game prior to the conclusion of the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen State Basketball Tournament. This year that happens on March 24, 2007. Teams are allowed to play scrimages prior to that and that is limited to only two (2). So early March games are not a possibility.

BD77. You owe me a snow cone. I am totally against separating the Privates and the Publics. I think it would be an injustice to them all for a lot of reasons. Call me old fashion if you want, but competition is competition. Who cares what the other teams back ground is or where they come from. I just don't like trying to level the playing field by any other means other than on the field. You put your best nine against my best nine and the winner takes home the iron. It took me a long time to get over this in the game of Football. I now agree because of the physical nature of the sport that there needs to be multiple divisions to help the smaller schools. I won't go so easily when it comes to Baseball. The numbers needed to compete and to cover injuries are just not the same. Sorry it's JMO

No, I'm paring down a football roster of 50 to 60 kids, to 40 who actually get playing time on the field. You are forgeting about special teams; extra point - offense and defense, Field goal - offense and defense, kick-off, kick-off return, punt and punt return. It's JMO, but if you play only 20 kids both ways and on every special team, you don't stand a chance of being competitive at any level. By the time you got to the 4th quarter they wouldn't have any legs left. 14 on a baseball team is an absolute minimum. The odds are not in your favor of going deep in a tournament with only 14. But you can be competitive. There is no comparison between Football and Baseball from a numbers perspective.
