Our two fastest players were timed running 4.7's this weekend in a camp. We are a small school and that is fast for us. What are you guys seeing.

Are you talking about at the High School level?

We have a guy couple of guys that run, 4.3 - 4.6, they are track and football stars and might not even play for us this year because their future is in one of those two other sports.

If you make a good hit, obviously a 40 doesnt matter, plus isnt it 90 feet to first. Stealing a base requires a pretty quick sprinter and i'd say a time of around 4-5 seconds for a forty is pretty good, IMO.

A 60 yard time is what is commonly used to determine baseball speed. Anything that is sub 7.0 is generally accepted as pretty good speed. Although I have seen a few prospect questionaires requesting 40 times as well as 60 times.

Thomas Tolliver from Raceland ended up being breaking the state record for stolen bases in a career last season and he ran his 40 in the 4.4 or 4.5 range. The kid could just flat out run!!! He is now playing ball at Transylvania University. But as firebird said, it is usually the 60 yd. time that is most important in baseball.

Wouldn't a 60yd time be a great measure for a baseball player? 40 yd time would be great for those infield hits.

Actually an assistant coach at Transy told me they clocked him at 6.6.

Football times are requested in 40's and Baseball, is requested in 60's. Times can vary by several .10's, if using a hand held stop watch or being electronically timed.

 

4.3-4.5 is excellent, while 4.6-4.8 is very good also. I often equate each .10 to being approximately 3 feet of distance.

60 yard times are the standard for baseball and our top base stealers run 6.8 to 6.9. However, scouts time players out of the box and down the line, a little over 30 yards and lie yo see under 4 seconds.

Miss a track meet here & there. Just go to home baseball games or when you don't have a track meet ? If the kid is that fast then he can afford to miss a practice or meet. He will still be "practicing" on the bases.

Takes a little more then speed to steal a base. Some of these lefties have such deceptive moves they ought to be illegal. You have to have speed, but you also need to be able to read the pitcher and have first step quickness.

I think on the high school level anything below 7 is a good time in the 60. Most small colleges would like to see all position players around or below that mark as well.
