Do all schools play games during their spring break or do they allow their kid's to have a spring break with their family? Just like to know if there are any team's that schedule around spring break.

If you have a good program, don't see how you could take off. Most teams play in tournaments that week. Kids have only one opportunity to play high school sports, they can go on vacation w/ family members when they are in college.

 

Baseball gets the shaft... season begins on Feb. 15th you have distractions like the prom, CATS testing, graduation, spring football practice which all occur during the spring. Don't get me wrong, prom, graduation, and CATS testing are all very important things. But everyone knows it's tough to try to practice the day after prom or graduation because most kids were out all night.

 

Student/Athletes should have a life, but Baseball is not treated as seriously as football or basketball. How many football coaches would allow a kid to miss summer workouts, and start the first day of school? How many basketball coaches would give a kid off the entire Christmas break?

 

Hitting a Baseball is the toughest thing to do in sports. Taking off an entire week can't help that.

If they don't, they certainly should play. Unfortunately, some schedule their Spring Break prior to the start of the allowable date, you can play your first game. Many teams head South, for tournaments, bonding, practice and excellent competition, against players who go year round.

 

Spring Break games/practice, are an absolute MUST for any program, whether they are rebuilding, re-loading or maintaining excellence. If a player wants to go on vacation or a parent is forcing them, than he will fall behind and honestly....I would question his commitment to the program. Many families do take vacations and family outings, but the KHSAA has set the guidelines for practice and "can't play the first game, till the Monday following the Basketball championship", so allowances by families have to be made.

 

What would happen if a player practices from Feb. 15th, plays 5-6 games and then goes on vacation, missing his team play 4-5 games....someone else will move ahead, gain valuable playing time, improve, make the commitment to the team and likely, not relinquish their position. I'll be conservative and if any player, misses 4-5 games...it will take another two weeks of practice and 5-6 games or more, to work overcoming the lost time.

 

Do what thousands others do, schedule vacation in late, late summer or fall....or the dead period.

I don't know of to many High School Baseball programs that don't require there kids to commit to playing during Spring Break. I'm not saying there aren't some programs out there, I just don't know of any.

Agreed and with rosters of 21, JV Teams, Freshman Teams and even Middle School, you offer a hint of lack of commitment and another player, who doesn't get as much playing time, who is hungry, wanting a chance to impress the coaching staff and his teammates, will jump at the opportunity.

As a former player, I know a lot of northern kentucky schools schedule games 4 or 5 games out of the week of spring break more depending on tournaments they are in.

Another advantage that Spring Break allows teams is that they do not have to follow the scheduling guidelines that will not allow teams to play more than three consecutive weekdays during times school is in session. That enables teams to get in more play and as we all agree, playing the game is invaluable versus practice. The high school baseball season is short and the weather plays havoc on schedules normally, therefore losing Spring Break week would devastate any quality teams' schedule. I don't know of a quality program in this state or in Ohio that does not play through their Spring Break week. Many public schools now have a Fall break as well and you would never hear of the football coach saying, "aw, just take the week off fellas." Nor would the basketball coach allow his players to take off the entire week between Christmas and New Years. Playing baseball is a choice and that choice will include not going on a Spring Break vacation.

At Boyd Co. the answer to both questions is yes. They have been going to Cocoa Beach Fla. for about 20 yrs. They play 8 or 9 varsity games on the trip and usually 2 JV games a day. There is time allowed for both kids and parents to spend quality time together during the trip. If your child is lucky and say he makes JV team as a 7th grader your looking at making this trip for 6 yrs. And I promise, if you are a fan of baseball these will be some of the best times of your life. I would strongly recommend any school that has ever thought of making this type of trip to do so.

That's what we've been doing for the last 7 years, perfect mix of baseball, beach, good food, and fun. Looks like we're headed back to Cocoa Beach in April.

We do play during Spring Break in a tournament every year. I honestly like it alot better than sitting around the house during Spring Break. It's fun head out to the field early, mess around take a few rounds of BP get alittle fielding in then jump on the bus and head to where ever we are going to play that game. I wish everyday was like that.:thumb:

I have had players quit because they couldn't go on spring break. One of my rules is you do not drink alcohol. When we get back after spring break the stories I hear of the drunkfests amaze me. It's worse because these kids are allowed to go to Florida on their own and do whatever. If they would rather do that then they can go and stay for all I care.

 

Someone earlier said it best - you got a small time period to play baseball but the rest of your life to do whatever.

I can't think of a better vacation than watching baseball in the sun and eating a hot dog. Take the family and have some fun and sun. This a great chance to get in a bunch of games and let a team bond.
