This why I said in my previous post that coaches and schools are really in no win situations now. We have seen good coaches be let go of for no good reason, other than giving into parents not liking their kid playing time. Then we have seen schools support their coaches, and then you still have all the social media backlash from those same parents. Trying to say a school is toxic, and the school isn't listening to the complaints of parents. It literally has become a no win situations for both coaches, and admin these days.

Life as a coach is definitely hard, as one of the hardest things is definitely not seeing your family as much as you like. With that said, I am failing to see how teaching at Kings will give him more family time? Maybe during the off season, possibly? Doesn't Kings start their school day earlier than Beechwood though? So still won't be gaining much more if any time in the mornings, especially during the season. Now the pay raise is definitely a thing, as Beechwood I believe is one of the lowest paying school districts in NKY. So the financial part of things definitely will be a help to the family. You mention coach Gray at the end. Coach Gray isn't a teacher is he? So when they hired coach Gray, they knew when they hired him he wouldn't be in the building. When they hired coach Volker, most likely they assumed he would be in the building when they hired him. Plus as mentioned this is just a situation you don't really see. Where a head coach is already in the building, but then chooses to go teach elsewhere. So that definitely makes this a unique situation. Coupled that with the pretty well known aspect everywhere that coach Volker would like to get back to coaching in Ohio on day, that is what makes this move interesting. As I said, I see little to no impact for this season. As I will be surprised if Beechwood doesn't win state title #19 this year. However, after this season is over, I do think this move makes things interesting, and why it is being talked about.

Coach Volker tweeted this out tonight in response to the rumors, sharing his direct communication that he sent to the program and district. So at least for this season, he looks to still be the coach at Beechwood. Which makes sense considering what they have coming back, as he should have a great chance to win state title number 2 in his four years at Beechwood. After this season though, I would be surprised if there is not a change and both parties agree to move on from each other.

I’ve said this in another thread, but dealing with “toxic” parents has become almost a no-win situation for both coaches and schools. Some schools give in and move on from good coaches simply because they don’t want to deal with the constant complaints and pressure. On the other hand, when schools do support their coaches, those same parents often turn around and attack the school publicly, saying the administration doesn’t care or isn’t listening. The reality is that, a lot of the time, the complaints stem from the fact that their son or daughter isn’t playing as much as they think they should, or isn’t the star of the team. The best way to handle it is to try to get out in front of it early. Have a parent meeting before the season and clearly communicate expectations. Establish a 24/48-hour rule after games before discussing concerns. Avoid going back and forth through texts or phone calls. If a parent has an issue, it should be discussed face-to-face in a meeting. And most importantly, the player should be part of that meeting as well. Many times, what parents are hearing at home isn’t the full truth. When the player is sitting there in person, the real reasons usually come out — whether it’s effort, attitude, attendance, accountability, or something else that needs to improve.

If the Bengals and Ravens can have good seasons, and go into the game with all star players healthy. That New Years Eve primetime game, will be a crazy environment. Probably very similar to the Bengals/Bills environment which was the best environment I had been at with how amped up the stadium was, before Hamlin accident.

We also got the Chiefs in December back when the Bengals made the Super Bowl.

I am not sure if that last sentence is true, just based off track record. Considering he was only at Carroll County for 3 years, only at Scott for 2 years, and now hasn't even coached a down at Western Hills yet, but may possibly leave for this job. That really doesn't scream like someone that could stay for a length of time.

I know Rick Honaker was very happy there, and also talked highly of the Superintendent, AD, etc. The only real reason why he left, was because he got a chance to take over the school he graduated from. I have no idea what happened though in regards to this change. Hopefully they can get someone that will stay and be there for awhile. I know the name Justin Franklin has been floated around in the coaching opening thread. However, with his tendency to move around, I am not sure if Gallatin should want to go that route. As it would be good to find someone who will stay and build that program.

It actually is very strange. It is one thing when a school hires a coach, but they teach elsewhere and never teach at that school or not even a teacher at all. Which you are correct that does happen. What is happening here is strange, since he was teaching in the building and coaching there. As you don’t see coaches then stop teaching at the school they are coaching at, so that part definitely is strange to see.

While as you know I don't really think Pope is the guy to lead UK. I also don't think the roster is as bad as you make it seem here. While they have swung and missed on a lot of the guys they wanted. I really do like the new two starting guards he brought in. I think the backup center is a very good pickup, as you need a strong physical presence like him. If Pope can find away to get one of the guys who is currently is testing the NBA draft waters, like the Iowa State transfer who was the top 3 point shooter in the country last year. Then this roster suddenly doesn't look to bad at all, especially if Moreno comes back. The PF from Europe also is a big athletic guy who can shoot the ball. I think a lot of the swing and misses definitely has been a bad look, but Pope has a chance to make this a really good roster still IF Moreno stays and Pope can land one of these guys testing the NBA draft waters.

The weakest part of the bengals defense was the defensive line. That part has been addressed, with that said linebacker is now the weakest.

A good or bad speechless? I don’t mind this addition. He is not a bad backup center to have. He is physical and can block shots and older. With that said, he has an injury history. So if he gets hurt again, I don’t want to hear people use injuries as an excuse again for Pope. As Pope knows he has an injury history and going with him anyways.

As many misses as coach Pope has had in this cycle. He could still potentially put a very good team together next season, depending on these last few possible additions. With the NBA deadline to drop out comes up in two weeks. There could be a few very good players available, and UK should have the money to make a serious run at some of them. Since they have missed out on most of their other guys they went after.

I believe you are correct, as that may be the only 2 districts with 6 teams. With that said also probably more so a coincidence that it happens to be with two teams that got moved up. As there has been 6 team districts even before this multiplier took effect.

I have heard the same about Morgan.

I would also say the toxic culture created by some parents at Cooper probably did not help the search process either, especially with the timing being so late. Coach Borchers is very well respected throughout the coaching community, and when coaches around the area see how some parents acted toward a coach who built that program from the ground up and led it to three state title games — including back-to-back appearances recently — it can definitely become a turn off. Despite all the success, there were still complaints from some parents who believed their child should have been the star or receiving more attention. Situations like that can absolutely be a turnoff for experienced head coaches who are already in good positions elsewhere and considering whether they want to step into that environment. With all that said I think Cooper made a good hire here. Coach Begley has been under and learned from Borchers these last 4 years, he knows these players, can keep the staff intact, knows the families. I am excited to see how he will do.

I believe this is a very good hire for Cooper, and I think Coach Begley will do a great job. Having been at the high school level at Cooper for the past four years, he already understands the program and many of the things that helped make the program successful under Coach Borchers. While he may not have as much varsity coaching experience as some candidates, he has been around the game for a long time. He is also extremely organized and experienced in overseeing and managing things the right way. By hiring from within, Cooper also gives itself a much better chance to retain a large portion of the current assistant staff and keep the program moving forward with continuity. If they had gone outside the program, there’s a good chance many of those assistants may have moved on as well. Another big positive is the relationships Coach Begley already has with many of the players from coaching them in youth football and at the freshman level. That familiarity should help provide stability within the program and strengthen the connection with the youth pipeline moving forward. Congratulations to Coach Begley!

Curious what name were you originally hearing based off this post? Which by the way I believe Adam Begley was a good hire by Cooper!

While I understand that type of thinking, and a lot of admin think just like that about wanting someone with head coaching experience. I also believe that is where a lot of schools also mess up, and then miss out on guys, because they didn't want to be the first to give that coach his first head coach experience. Which take Holmes for example. While Holmes has a great history of basketball success, the key word there is history. As sadly that is not what Holmes currently is and hasn't been in awhile. Gone are the days where many proven head coaches probably would leave their current program to get the opportunity to go coach there, as it isn't exactly a desirable job at the moment. Which maybe they could get a Ricardo Johnson, Tracy Pope or someone like that to come back because of those ties to the program and would be good hires. However, take Ricardo for instance. Why should he want to come back, if he had applied before and Holmes wasn't willing to give him that first chance, but yet Holy Cross was willing to do that and he has done a good job there. So unless there is something to that post earlier in this thread, about people maybe wanting Johnson out at Holy cross. He literally wouldn't have much reason to go back to Holmes unless he is no longer wanted at Holy Cross. I definitely get the attraction to hiring someone with head coaching experience. I feel like a lot of programs are also tying their own hands behind their back, and sometimes letting good coaches end up elsewhere because of that need to get someone with experience. So yeah Holmes could decide to continue to only hire guys with head coach experience, but then put them in a spot where that coach they passed up on, doesn't come back after now getting that experience. To me you hire the best coach you can for that program, and that doesn't always mean the guy with head coaching experience is better than someone without it.

Tracy Pope teaches at Walton-Verona now, but would be a good hire if he wanted to go back. Someone that I believe would be a very good hire and was already on the staff, and does currently teach at Holmes and that is Dan Penick. He has been an assistant coach at Ludlow under Dan Sullivan, and Aaron Stamm. Then has been an assistant on Sam's staff at Holmes. He already teaches there, can relate and build relationships with players, and would continue building off the positive momentum of the last two years. I have no idea if he is interested in becoming a head coach or not. If so, then I think he would be a great hire for Holmes.

I know for me I have said on here that I believe if they were to do the multiplier, then it needs to be done to public schools as well who have out of district kids. Now with all that said, I don't believe any of that should be done. The only thing that should be considered is the success factor idea, that they originally talked about back in January, before then for some reason switching to this multiplier for private schools. The success model makes sense as an approach, if they were going to try to change something.

Walton-Verona is bringing on board coach Ed Smart to be an assistant coach this season. Coach Smart brings in over 30 years of coaching experience, with over 20 of those years being as a varsity head coach. Many of those years as a head coach being at Grayson County High School. He should bring great knowledge and experience to the staff at Walton-Verona.
