VARSITY FOOTBALL HEAD COACH

Gallatin County Athletics is excited to announce that Cody Smith will be our Head Varsity Football Coach!

Coach Smith comes to Gallatin County with over 13 years of coaching experience at the high school level and 1 year at the college level. Most recently, Coach Smith was the Defensive Coordinator at Dixie Heights High School.

Coach Smith is known for a "student-first" coaching philosophy and emphasizes discipline, academic excellence, and community involvement. "Our goal isn't just to win on Friday nights," says Smith, "but to build young men of character who will lead their communities long after they hang up their cleats."

Coach Smith holds a Master's degree in Special Education from the University of Saint Francis and is supported by his wife Cynthia and daughter Kaylin.

Coach Smith improved the defense each year he was a defensive coordinator at each school he was at. The offensive and defensive system will be an intense, attacking style with grit and determination.

MATTHEW HOLLIDAY
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Gallatin County Athletics is excited to announce that Matthew Holliday will be our Defensive Coordinator!

He brings 7 years of experience to the High School level and 1 with Middle School. Most recently he was an assistant at Scott High School.

Coach Holliday has worked alongside and learned from coaches and players who have competed at the highest levels of the game, including numerous student-athletes who have played Division I SEC football and gone on to play in the NFL. These experiences have helped shape his defensive philosophy and prepare him to develop and lead a championship-caliber defense at Gallatin County.

Coach holds a degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from the University of Cincinnati. He currently works within the middle school, supporting students in special education while also helping develop young student-athletes and building a strong foundation for the future of the program.

COACH NICHOLAS STEFFEN
ASSISTANT COACH

Coach Steffen was born and raised in Ludlow, KY, where he played football for 12 years. After graduation he joined the US Air Force and served our country for 7 years. He has traveled all around the country and the world.

After separating from the Air Force, he moved to Warsaw with his wife Brittney, his two sons Benjamin and Grayson, and his daughter Lilly.

He began his coaching career within the Gallatin County football community, helping develop players and build a strong foundation for the program.

He started coaching high school football for Gallatin County High School in 2024 as WR/DB coach. In 2025 he stayed with GCHS as WR/DB coach, Special Teams Coordinator and JV Head Coach. Coach Steffen is excited to bring his passion and energy back to the sideline in 2026 after spending last season in the Coach's booth.

Coach Steffen treats his players as if they were his own kids with love, respect, and encouragement. He
genuinely cares about their development on and off the field. He works his hardest to instill discipline and hard work into his players.

I know Matthew from Holmes, very down to earth when it comes to working with kids, coaches hard someone who deserves a shot at being a coordinator.
