No you guys are not mistaken , as I remember the game very well that you are talking about. I think that it was part of the Clarence D. Rice Tip-Off Classic. It, at that time, was a series of all day games showcasing all of the county teams beginning with the elementary teams , progressing to the middle school teams, and then ultimately a series of scrimmage games at the high school level. You are right, Rose Hill did win that particular game pretty handily as well as the 7th grade game. Apparently the JCMS people viewed them as scrimmage games , because they were not recorded as a loss to the regular season record. Whether it should have been or not, IDK, but it wasn't recorded as being a regular season game, I assume, because of all the other scrimmage games that took place that day. But to give the Rose Hill folks the deserving credit, JCMS was not anywhere in the same league as those Rose Hill teams, but heck nobody else in the state was either for that matter. I do remember those series of middle school games with Rose Hill very fondly over that two or three year period. JCMS on a few occasions was very competitive with those great Rose Hill teams. I know that JCMS was never able to win any of the games, but I remember a couple games where Rose Hill had to go to overtime to beat JCMS. Matter of fact I still have a few of those games on film. They were definately highlights of my sons childhoods. I also need to correct a statement I made in my initial post. I mentioned that there had been a loss of several players over the last two years. That should have been stated as saying over the last 4 years.

I dont know anything at all about that , but since the current group of senior(s) were 8th graders the current roster of those 15 players plus one Sheldon Clark freshman transfer has dwindled from a total of 16 to 1 in the last 2 years. McCarty is the only one left from an 8th grade class that was considered one of the best classes of players to ever enter into JCHS. However it should be noted that that was not McCarty's original class, as he stayed back in 8th grade once. His original class did end up with a 28-0 record in 8th grade play however.

I like Memorial. It could be a great gym if they would clean it up the way Prestonsburg has done theirs. PBurg was always my favorite place to play. I remember playing at Allen Central when they had a tartan playing surface. When was it that they went to hardwood?

I dont think that the Etown team or the JTown team would have even come close, although both teams did knock my school out of the state tournament both years en route to state titles.

I think that Tackett was more on the side of about 6'1"- 6'2".

You had to see them to understand how good they were. There is a common conception that the players of today are always bigger,faster and stronger than of the era of 30 years ago but these guys could play and were as athletic as any player that plays the game today.

sfan, in post #19 I did indeed include the '79 Lafayette team. That was a great team.

Just by pure athleticism I would say that the Male teams that I mentioned would have been the best I have personally ever witnessed. In the '75 state tournament I saw the entire team form a dunk line before the referees came out and every player on the team put one down. I played for Johnson Central that season and if we had of won our opening round game , I would have had the chance to play against Griffith and Turner in that tournament. Unfortunately we were beaten by a team that we had beaten two weeks earlier in the regular season and did not get the opportunity. As a side note Male went on to beat the team that beat us by the largest margin ever at that time in state tournament history. Could have been something to tell the grandkids about.

That was a great team Frances, and you could be right, but I think that maybe the '75 or '76 Male team could have been a better challenger. In my opinion that may have been the best team to ever come out of Kentucky. I may be wrong but I think at one point in one of those seasons ( probably '76) they were the #1 ranked high school team in the country. The '79 Lafayette team was pretty danged good too. I am positive that they finished the season ranked as the #2 team in the country.

And still a friend, advisor, father figure, and mentor to many of us. He wasn't just all about basketball.

Yeah it is McCarty that he was talking about. After the first 4 or 5 games he was averaging about 37 points per game. I think it is down to about 27 or 28 now. Still pretty good to get 20 yesterday.

Welch is not the one that has been injured, it is #4 McCarty. Are you saying that Welch looked like he played poorly? I think he ended up with something like 19 points. I think that even McCarty ended up with about 20.

Whoa Frances , you are taking this one way out on context. I'll PM you where I am coming from. Ashland had a great team that year. It was a huge victory for Johnson Central. I certainly assure you no offense was directed at Ashland's players or their program.
