  1. I know HS is different form Pro. I think it has something to do with the prior play being a run (where the clock was running) v. an incomplete pass or out of bounds run. In the pros, I don't think the clock starts until next snap regardless. In #2, there might be a runoff of time if A doesn't have any timeouts left (although odd since the penalty was for delay of game). Also, a little birdie told me there may be some discretion available to the ref to start the clock at a different time if the ref feels a team is "gaming" the system -- for example, when leading to keep an offensive team from getting penalties just to get another 25 second runoff when the clock starts running at the ready for play.
  2. B leads A by 3 late in the 4th Qtr. A is driving deep in B territory. With 2:00 left, on 2nd & goal, A runs the ball down to the B 2 yd. line. Clock is running A approaches the line of scrimmage and attempts to draw B offside. 1 - B jumps offside. Clock is stopped, ball is moved to the 1 yd. line and clock is restarted at the "ready for play" whistle and it remains 3rd & goal from the 1, right? 2 - B does not jump and A is whistled for delay of game. Clock is stopped, ball is moved back to the 6 yd. line and it remains 3rd & goal from the 6. Does the clock restart on the "ready for play" whistle?
  3. Didn't 1 of the striped shirts solve that problem for HHS a year or 2 ago? Maybe he can't be in the gym for the opening tip for the jinx to work / be avoided.
  4. Let's assume for purposes of this thread that the workouts being conducted by whatever team are KHSAA-compliant.
  5. What's everyone doing? I know HHS got their 1st workout in yesterday despite school not being in session. TUE, THU & SAT from here until 2.15 when I expect it to go to MON - SAT (and some SUN if the weather is nice and they can get outside on those days.) Looking forward to baseball with all this cold weather.
  6. Saw Houliston's name in the box score. Did he play much or is he easing into it? Regardless, when he is back in basketball shape, he will help this team. Seems odd for a team with such a late start to be taking a full week off now. Some post-football practice may be the best thing for them. Good to hear the crowd was good and vocal.

  8. In an ideal world, you are correct. Q knows very well that HHS hoops does not operate in an "ideal world." When you have 80% of your roster heavily occupied with the pigskin from the 1st day of summer break until the 1st week of DEC, you get "chemistry and muscle memory" via on the job training during the 1st 1/3 of the season. Coach Listerman's main job, IMO, is to increase the participating talent level across all levels (middle school to SRs). For those that want to hoop only, give them the reason to do so. For those that want to hoop and play football, make sure you make it as easy as possible to do so to the maximum. Most importantly, for those that stop playing hoops, at whatever level, find out why and try to change it for that kid, if possible, and try to prevent it from being the same reason for the next kid that comes down the line.
  9. Saw a lot of good things from the Birds on SAT night. They are very scrappy -- and they need to be. Buten runs the point well and is a continuing nuisance to the opposing PG with his defense. Harris has progressed nicely and has good length and skills. The return of Houliston will help and the other footballers transitioning to the round ball will improve. Hergott never got into rhythm as he was saddled with foul trouble the whole game. Although admittedly a very limited sample, in-game coaching seems to have improved. Very calm & steady from a demeanor standpoint and Xs & Os improved. For example, in the 1st half, Birds simply threw the ball around the top of the WV 2-3 zone. In the 2nd half, they made a concerted effort to flash players to the elbow and baseline on the same side when the ball rotated there. Ended up with 2 or 3 nice "give n go" layups feeding from both locations. Without a spot up 3 point shooter, zones are going to sag on the Birds. Without an aircraft carrier in the middle, only crisp passing forcing the defenders to move will allow inside scoring.
  10. Congratulations to Collins. They played a whale of a game and did not fade in the 3rd & 4th Qtr. Good athletes, well coached, solid system and a program on the rise. Enjoy it. You earned it. In reality, the Winner / Loser was decided by a single pass that was well covered. If the LB gets there a second earlier and tips the ball, is HHS "clearly the better team?" If #85 juggles it (which he clearly did not -- he grabbed hold and would not be denied), is Collins' program less on the rise? Winning and losing matters. It is not, however, the only thing. As Teddy Roosevelt said (and many on BGP could stand to remember): "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
  11. If the starting QB was still in there, I agree. Let them get in formation and then call a TO. They either have to change from their "best play" formation OR you get some time to prepare for that formation. HOWEVER, with the backup QB in (and not having much time to be prepared since the refs did not appear to give them much time after notifying the Collins coaching staff VERY late in the TO that the starting QB needed to sit out a play), I think you play it out and make the backup beat you with less preparation -- which he did.
  12. If I recall correctly, it is still a haze, I don't think Collins ever had 1st & Goal. The last play was 4th & 7 from the 11, I think. That means on that series if they get the 1st down and you've burned all your TOs, you give them more clock to work with.
  13. Does Collins rotate any DBs? If not, the WR rotation can wear on you EVEN IF the DBs are not also playing offense. Problem is, 1 or 2 of the 4 WRs runs mid to deep on each play (even running plays). As the DB jogs back to the line of scrimmage for the next play, snapped as soon as the ball is placed ready by the White Hat, he stares across at a new WR who just came off the sidelines after resting while he was running deep with the WR that is now jogging to the sidelines to get his blow before the next play. Take a play off as a DB and that is when they go over the top. It is challenging to say the least.
  14. After some consideration, I would prefer a higher starting point and a return to normal timing at some lower point. For example, even if you keep it at 36 to start, return to normal timing when lead drops below 25 points (4 possessions). I don't like those games where you get running clock and then the opponent's 1st team scores quickly on the 2nd team to return to normal timing. This would at least give some cushion to play some reserves. Although admittedly a rarity, my main reason is to keep the system from being "gamed" and making a farce of things. For example, if HHS wanted to, they could have simply chosen to: * tackle any receiver that got behind a DB (penalty is pass interference and the clock continues to run while they figure it out and assess it) * anticipate the snap count aggressively (if you are offsides, again it is only 5 yds and the clock runs while assessed; if you guess right, you can blow up the play and could conceivably cause injuries) * take multiple illegal procedure or delay of game penalties (clock runs) on offense * take a knee after gaining a 1st down to allow more plays to run clock via longer drive Most of the above would have been "smart" strategy to get the clock to run and limit LexCath possessions (and chances to score) but not real sportsmanlike IMO.
  15. Sounds like they are on their way and continuing to improve the program. Wonder what changed in the 1st game that convinces a coach to change the plans set forth during an entire summer of intense practice. As discussed numerous times on here, the benefits of 2 platoon are many. Coach Lucas identifies a few in the article. Hope for a well played game.

I think they played on the JV and Frosh levels this year which makes me think it was addressed.   19. Don't think it changes the result, but I suspect Ashland without Baker (flu, I heard) is not the same team. Regardless, lack of any meaningful pressure on the QB meant HHS would score as often as they possessed the ball and did not turn it over. Nice work by Kendall for the 2nd week in a row. Kid is quick and shifty. Daugherty ran hard when given the ball. Looking forward to next week and this group of Seniors' last home game -- regardless of outcome.

To the JC folks, 2 or 3 issues have been identified year after year: 1 - weak schedule 2 - no balance on offense (run, run, run) (3) - platoon football (guys going both ways) I hope there is no argument that those are critical factors inhibiting a good JC program from progressing to the next level. Assuming that is correct: Are they UNABLE or UNWILLING to change on these 3 points? 1 - Unless good teams refuse to play JC (certainly possible given some of Matney's antics), this seems to be UNWILLING. HHS went to John Hardin and Paducah this year. There are teams that will play you. You just have to find them. It would be interesting to hear the answer if Matney called Dale and offered a home & home series. 2 - I can't figure out how this would be UNABLE. Even if you don't currently have QBs who can throw and WRs that can catch, you can develop both of those. Do whatever it takes from youth football to Frosh to JV and start to develop these talents. The kids see it every SAT and SUN on TV, you gotta figure they are wondering why they can't do the same. 3 - Not sure what the total participation or depth of the roster looks like, but this could be UNABLE. Even if it is just reducing the # of players going both ways OR reducing the # of snaps that those players play, you can at least start moving in that direction.
