Glad to hear B. Buten played an excellent game tonight! Kid has spent a lot of time in the gym, battled through injuries, and could have given up a couple of years ago...kid is a class act and a competitor! Keep playing hard B!

Good for Buten. Glad to hear it.

Shannon with a solid game for BBHS. They needed him tonight.

 Comments in the update thread, especially Mustangs take on the officiating.

Tough for Jennings to find any rythm tonight. Very Solid game from Buten

Congrats to the Mustangs. Another nice win for Brossart.

Congrats also to the Birds. Sounds like they are gaining some traction and making progress. Keep it up!

Best that Highlands has played to date. The effort was excellent and the results spell that out. Now the key is playing with that emotion and effort in each and every game going forward. Really like how Coach Listerman handled himself throughout the game and after. Immediately after the game he cheered on the effort of his team and asked Dale to have those students in attendance remain in the stands. He then went over to them and applauded them for supporting their fellow students and encouraged them to keep showing up. Really felt that the student body and some parents had a lot to do with how well the team played. Great atmosphere for what turned out to be a very energetic and fun game to watch. The ship is heading in the right direction, but it is still going to take time and hard work by coaches and players.

Congrats to BB, didn't think Highlands would keep it this close. Then again, I have not seen them play...lol

No question the environment can play a small role.

TAC's take:

Brossart came out gunning and took a commanding lead and the rout was on. Not so quick! Highlands started creeping back into the game and than the Brendan Buten show started. What could have been a 13 point lead at half was negated by a Buten half court buzzer beater. After halftime Listerman had him team channeling the momentum. He did a great job recognizing Brossarts sets and his team responded. He then got his fans into the game and the birds nest became electric. Brossart drew cold from the field and thanks to some interesting whistles by one of the 9th regions finest, Brossart was without the services of Burns and Jennings. Buten was unstoppable. Whomever Brossart put on him he seemed to be able to get around them or shoot over them. Brossart was in no hurry to score and Highlands D did a great job making them work for each attempt. The saving grace for Brossart was the ice in the veins from the line the last quarter. I believe they were 11-12 in the Final stanza.

Highlands is scrappy and Listerman has them playing hard. I think it was a moral victory and something to build on. Hard to think a 9 point loss could be a positive, but after the slow start in the season and the slow start in this game, the light may have switched on. They started believing in themselves.

Great to see the good folks from my old home town. Best wishes to the birds and a special shutout to Ryan Greene for a speedy recovery from the ACL injury.

Mustangs are back in action today at 3:30 in district play at Calvary Christian.

Not much more can be said about the effort from Brendon Buten. It was awesome.

Nice effort from the Birds defensively. Hergott, Houliston, Harris, and Shepherd did a nice job battling the twin towers of Brossart. Nice weakside help from Weyer, Brockett, and Buten. Few easy baskets given up. In the first quarter, tne Mustangs hit a couple of threes but went cold from outside the rest of the game. As others had said, at 19-3 after one quarter, I thought the route would be on. Refs starting calling those touch fouls that have become "point of emphasis" and it helped the Birds to get into a better flow offensively.

Trentman had a real nice game. Young man really runs the floor well. He is tough to handle in the open floor with his length and finishing ability. He also knocked down several of those free throws at the end. Tough to overcome a deficit when a team shoots that well from the stripe.

Nice to see and hear the support for the Highlands team from those in attendance. It was a nice crowd compared to some in the past. It got really loud in the second half. Some may say a few got a little overzealous with the support. I get it. The boys have struggled. Last night they did a lot of good things against a good opponent. It was fun. The boys had fun.

Oh and did I mention - Buten was worth the price of admission himself.
