Was told the Breds were down in the 4th quarter, but rally to claim there 8th All "A regional title in a row and 12th overall ('95, '01, '02, & '03, '07 - '14).

Congrats Breds. :ylsuper:

Was it true the Breds were down one in the 4th of this one?

Confirmed via text from a Beechwood parent.

Great showing by the Tigers as well.

Yes

Beechwood had a good game plan and in my opinion newcath looked very tired. I am guessing that its from the game last night and having to come back and play at 4pm today. Ware was by far the MVP of the tournament...

Ncc did look like the were sluggish through most of the first half. Beechwood had a very good game plan and Ncc kept settling for outside shots for the most part in the first half. (Not making many). The Breds were able to get a late spurt to take the lead at the half. Beechwood in the 3rd period had the offense clicking and Ncc was still cold and the Tigers took a small lead at the end of the 3rd period with a (things are going your way) bank three by Stuempel. In the 4th period Ncc hit a couple hugh three's by Neace that gave the Bred's the lead for good. With only one player subbing in off the bench for Beechwood they simply ran out of gas but played with a heart of a lion. Stuempel isn't overly fast, quick, or flashy but just makes things happen. Played an excellent game under constant pressure. Ncc is going to have to figure out how to get off to a faster start if they want to make a deep run in the all A.

NewCath wins 12th All 'A' championship

Newport Central Catholic, the most dominant team in the history of the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic Ninth Region girls' basketball tournament, reasserted itself as boss Saturday with a 49-39 win against stubborn Beechwood in the championship game at St. Henry.

A balanced scoring effort, led by Alexus Mayes' 11 points, powered the Thoroughbreds (17-2) to their eighth consecutive small-school regional crown. They earned their fourth win in six days.

It marked the first appearance in the final for Beechwood (8-7), led by Macy Stuempel's 15 points.

Nicole Kiernan, playing with sore ribs, added nine points and 10 rebounds for NewCath, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll. Sarah Neace sank three 3-point baskets, two in the fourth quarter, for nine points.

Stephanie Lewis had eight points and nine rebounds for the Thoroughbreds, who advance to play 15th Region champion Paintsville in a first-round All "A" Classic state tournament game at 5 p.m. Jan. 29 at Frankfort Convention Center. NewCath finished state runner-up last season.

Thoroughbreds point guard Michaela Ware scored seven points and was named tournament MVP. Mayes, who played at less than full strength after battling an illness, Lewis, and Beechwood's Stuempel and Allison Johnson were named all-tournament.

It's NewCath's 11th All "A" Classic regional title in 14 years and 12th overall. But it came with some anxious moments. The Thoroughbreds trailed 31-30 after Stuempel's 3-point bomb banked in to put the Tigers ahead as the buzzer sounded to end the third.

There were 14 tie scores and lead changes. Consecutive alternating baskets changed the lead seven times in the second quarter, but Beechwood went more than five minutes in the fourth without a field goal.

Though the loss stung, it won't be long before the Tigers get a chance to avenge it. They host NewCath on Thursday.

PLAY OF THE GAME: Neace's trey making it 33-all in the first minute of the fourth started a 15-2 NewCath run that gave them a 19-8 final-quarter scoring advantage.

VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE: "We're banged up and we're tired, and I told the girls' they had to wake up or they were going to lose," said NewCath coach George Stoll, who chewed out his team in between the third and fourth quarters. "I'm happy we won, but we are absolutely spent."

Said Beechwood coach Dick Maile: "The accomplishment is we stayed with our game for three and a half quarters. Then we got back into some of our old ways in the fourth, and they got their little spurt."

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ware added six assists and played solid defense. "At one point, we had our heads down. But it was still a close game and we had to keep going," she said.

QUOTABLE: "Mr. Stoll yelled at us, saying this was real and that we had to do better," said Mayes. "So we stuck down on defense in the fourth quarter."

ALL-TOURNAMENT: MVP-Michaela Ware, Alexus Mayes, Stephanie Lewis (NewCath), Macy Stuempel, Allison Johnson (Beechwood), Kira Ross (Bellevue), Alex Hennge (Villa Madonna), Dajah McLendon (Holy Cross), Nicole Schowalter (Dayton), Tori Wofford (Ludlow), Sam Hentz (St. Henry), Katlyn Hoeh (Newport), Taylor Schwarz (Heritage Academy), Victoria Stegge (Lloyd), Ashley Fusting (Covington Latin).

BONUS POINTS: Either NewCath or Holy Cross has won the Ninth Region All "A" Classic girls' tournament every year but one since 1996. Newport won it in 2000. Holy Cross has seven titles. St. Henry, with two, is the only other team with more than one. Walton-Verona won the first small-school regional crown in 1992.

When Sarah Neace gets in a "zone" she can hit 3's in bunches. Great job Sarah. :ylsuper:

Solid effort by Stephanie Lewis. :thumb:

Congrats to Michaela Ware on being named the MVP of the tourney, she has really stepped up her game this year.

They had to overcome a slow start.

But the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 49-39 win over the Beechwood Lady Tigers to claim their eighth straight All “A” 9th Region championship. NewCath (17-2) will take on 15th Region champion Paintsville (10-6) at 5 p.m. at the Frankfort Convention Center on Jan. 29 to open the tournament.

NewCath had balanced scoring Saturday. Alexus Mayes led the way with 11 points with Sarah Neace and Nikki Kiernan scored nine each. Neace made three three-pointers. Kiernan had 14 rebounds and Stephanie Lewis grabbed 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

Beechwood saw just one player reach double-digits. That was Macy Stuempel with 13 points on three three-pointers.

The Thoroughbreds and Lady Tigers (8-7) meet again Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Fort Mitchell.

Fort Thomas Sports: NCC wins another All "A" Girls crown; Highlands teams win

Very nice showing by a young Beechwood Tiger team. The two players that made all tournament for Beechwood are a sophomore and a freshman.

Anyone who thinks coaching is not of paramount importance need look no farther that this Beechwood Lady Tigers team.

Dick Maile is, and has been, an excellent coach for a lot of seasons, and it is telling with this year's Beechwood's girls.

Coach Stoll and I are good buddies and I'm so impressed with the way he has taken on this team and the challenges of being a young head coach. Keep up the good work players and coach!
