I was shocked on how few players Owensboro had. I am also used to a tougher team.....I wish Owensboro all the luck in the world the rest of this season and next.....Nice kids and nice fans!!!!

Normally, this one would be an old fashioned WKC gut check. Not this time...it will probably resemble some of the spankings that the Red Devils used to give us. That's a shame, because this is a grand old rivalry. I hope that I still get to see some of the friends I've made on the other side of the fence in recent years though.

Correction on the final TD: DeWalt scored on a 42 yd pass from reserve So QB Devin Hayes...his first TD pass!

There was no scoring in the first qtr. The only action was a fumble that killed a drive deep in enemy territory for each team. The Purples struck first when Sr RB KJ Cofer scored on a one yd run at 11:23 in the second qtr. Sr K Sam Williams booted the PAT, and BGHS led 7-0. At 5:24, Sr RB Hunter Neveras caught an 80 yd bomb from Sr QB Scooter Hollis. Williams converted again, and the Purples led 14-0. So WR Nacarius Fant caught a Hollis pass and raced 42 yards for the score. Williams failed on the kick this time, and the Purples led 20-0. Henderson Co scored on a run and booted the PAT with 21 seconds left, and the score at the half was 20-7. The Purples benefitted from three long TD runs in the third qtr. Neveras scored from 52 yds out at the 10:13 mark. A pass for the 2pt conversion was good and the Purples led 28-7. With 4:22 left, Cofer rumbled 21 yards for the score. Williams hit the PAT, and the Purples led 35-7. Then, with only 36 seconds left in the qtr, So RB Blue Tisdale ran for 34 yards to paydirt. The kick failed, but the Purples now led 41-7. In the final qtr, So RB Blake Pillow ran the ball in from two yds out, and Jr WR Spencer Renfro ran the ball in for the 2pt conversion for the 49-7 lead with 10:27 left. At 5:32, So RB Danny DeWalt scored the final rushing TD, but the 2pt conversion failed, and the Purples won 55-7. Next week, the Purples will host old WKC rival Owensboro, and these games usually turn out to be good old fashioned gut checks. We are really looking forward to seeing this game! Good luck to both sides!

Thanx a bunch, 'Pick! Congrats on the Cards' win over Tilghman as well!:thumb: Another outstanding player not being mentioned is Sr DB and fourth year starter Michael Bailey. He won WBKO TV's Play of the Week for his return of the blocked punt tonight. He is not very big, but there's very little he can't do. He sacks QBs and tackles for losses, blocks kicks and returns them, punts, hits much harder than his size. Plays DB quite well too! I wish to congratulate both squads for some very intense football tonight...they both deserve it. My old gold game jersey from my senior year in 1976 has now seen two very huge first-time wins in a series. It was the very jersey I wore the night we beat Paducah Tilghman for the first time. Now, it has seen history made again with a first time win over the Tigers. I would further like to add that the staff at the stadium were wonderful hosts and the food was excellent. It was a great experience overall at a stadium where I was looking forward to seeing a football game!:thumb:I sincerely hope that the St X fans have the same kind of experience at our place next season!

IMO, both teams did great!! X has nothing to hang their heads over. I am very proud of our Purples!!! Way to go guys!!!

You know the wheelchair, but I will be wearing my 1976 vintage BGHS gold jersey with the purple #57 trimmed in white on it (the actual jersey I wore the night we beat Paducah Tilghman for the first time ever!). I will also be swapping skin with our guys as they come out for battle and as they leave the field. Also thanx for the kind words of our efforts to make Tiger fans feel right at home during the classic bowl games...it was a pleasure for all of Purple Nation! Three of the games were very competitive. Also, I very much enjoyed talking with Trinity fans after last year's game...they were very gracious in victory. And I feel that I have great rapport with T fans such as you, Pep Rock, and some others here! (Trinity leads 5-0, and I was a soph on the first BGHS team to meet Trinity [1974]).

St Xavier and BGHS have met eight times, the first time in 1925. They have never played more than two years in a row. The only real dominant games the Tigers have played were in 1981 and 1982. The best games were in 1931 (13-12 lead for St X through three qtrs before they scored an insurance TD, and the two bowl games...absolute classics!). The Tigers lead the series 8-0. Though we trail big in the series, I like this series because the games are very competitive and the fans respect each other. I've never met a Tiger fan I didn't like! I, for one, am glad to see that we're playing again. I predict another nail biter, one way or the other! Mrs PH and I will do our very best to make it up there and see if we can enjoy another great game!

I'm sure he was just giving some of the more important backups some real time experience...just didn't work out too well. Besides, Coach Wallace is from the same school as Coach Haley in that he doesn't like to go out of the way to embarrass the opponent. I read the unofficial numbers out of the Park City...unreal!

There's only one BGHS passing attack I can think of that was better than this one...led by a certain West Point QB by the name of Steelman. He holds all of Alma Mater's passing marks. Ryan Wallace is, to date, the best receiving TE in school history. But Hollis and Co. should make their mark...maybe even have the best single year through the air. I just want great things for them on the gridiron and in life, and I want Purples down the road to remember their exploits on the gridiron!

Sr TE Jalen Hunter tied a bowl record with three TD receptions to highlight an explosive night for the Purples. This earned him Offensive Player of the Game honors. For the second year in a row, the defensive award went to Sr DB Michael Bailey. As usual, he did anything required to help win a game, blocking a punt that was returned for BGHS's first score and catching a pass from Sr QB Scooter Hollis for a 2pt conversion. So LB Lincoln Quick returned a fumble 50 yards for a score. Sr DB Jackson Sowell returned a punt 37 yards for a score. Sr DB Landon Turner scooped up Bailey's punt block and took it the last 15 yards for a score. So RB Blake Pillow scored on a five yd run. All four of BGHS's second qtr TDs came within 5:39 of each other. I'm sure that the Pats are not that bad...they just hit up on the Purples on the wrong night. Next up for the Purples will be Henry Clay Friday night (I think it's at Lafayette) at the IHigh Football Frenzy. The Blue Devils weren't too successful in their last outing, having been blasted by John Hardin 56-6. Here's hoping that the Purples will continue their superb play Friday in Lexington!:thumb:

BGHS is solid all the way around. I'd say at least five TDs...more if the defense is hawking the ball the way they did against AC-S. It could get ugly fast.:thumb:

His uncle was at Warren Central and is still assisting his nephew with the Pats. Super nice folks! Great defense by the Cards, especially in the first half. Yep, this BGHS Purples fanatic and his wife were at the game! Greenwood is a team with excellent size and some decent skill players. They play spirited football and can take advantage of other teams' mistakes to stay in the game. I liked Mayfield's effort tonight...they didn't get all wrapped up in it if they made a mistake and kept plugging away. The Gators played hard, but it wasn't enough and shot themselves in the foot too many times. I've always wanted to see the Cards play, and I didn't come away disappointed! Mrs PH wanted me to tell you all that she liked the crowd and the cheerleaders too. The cheerleaders aren't an obvious dance team, and the crowd is full of spirit for their team. I hope I have plenty to brag about tomorrow night after the AC-S game...stay tuned!

Actual score of the varsity portion of the scrimmage was 20-7 Purples. I said, "Uh-oh...!!!:eek:" when Manual scored on their first play from scrimmage on a long pass play. But the Purples regrouped quickly and played typical BGHS Football the rest of the varsity portion. WR Nacarius Fant (I believe a soph or jr) tied the score with a long pass play from Sr QB Scooter Hollis. Sr RB KJ Cofer scored on about a 20 yd run, and Sr WR Michael Bailey caught one from Hollis from about 30 yards to account for the scoring. The Purple goal line defense looked really good a couple of times. The Purples will start Week 0 in the nightcap on the field turf at WKU against defending 4A Runner-Up Allen Co-Scottsville in The Rafferty's Bowl Saturday. I think that this has the makings of an outstanding scrimmage. BGHS returns seven on offense and nine on defense. DB Michael Bailey and LB KJ Cofer are both fourth year starters. Bailey does just about anything on defense, including catching runners for losses and sacking QBs. Mrs PH and I are hoping that the Ram family will be there in force...we really like those fellows!

QB Hunter Gary did everything except pop the popcorn and flip the burgers!! He should be a candidate for BGP's All-Athlete team. The Purples gave everything they had in playing Trinity. The staff and the players at Trinity know that they were fortunate to come away with the win even though the numbers were overwhelmingly in favor of the Rocks. A FG would have won it...a 2pt conversion would have tied it and sent it into OT. The Purples were understandably down after the Trinity loss. Grayson Co has a schedule that is not condusive to earning high rankings. But they do have an excellent coach who knows how to get his troops ready for a game. They have superb discipline. Their defense was unscored upon going into this game (they had only given up a safety going into this game), but the Purples hung 41 pts against them (34 by the offense). I think that AP had it right, although seventh was a little high...they should have been recognized anyway, and the fact that they faced down the mighty Purple machine and didn't blink should get some much needed recognition. Trust me...the Purples will be just fine! Sic 'em, Purple!!

Hunter Gary is a superb all-around player...did just about everything except pop the popcorn and flip the burgers!!:lol: Hunter Neveras (jr) was unstoppable last night. The latest Purples star caught scoring strikes from junior QB Scooter Hollis of 75 and 71 yards, and he also ran one in from 59 yards!:eek:Senior Tevin Anderson pounded the ground for 15 and 5 yd scores. LB Armando Music (yep, another junior) sealed the deal with his 20 yd return of a fumble. I think that the final in this game was a combination of factors. BGHS was physically beat up and had 3-4 starters out from the Trinity game. Also, star junior Brandon Green was injured very early in this game. The Purples were also still down from coming sooo close to beating Trinity last week. They were dominated in the statistics, yet still had a chance to win it or tie it in regulation. Bob Beatty knows that BGHS is nobody's doormat and was jubilant with last week's victory. Believe me, we really appreciate the fact that he holds BGHS in such high regard! Also, Grayson Co, maligned schedule or no, brings it to the table and plays you hard! If they were to strengthen their schedule, they would probably be regarded as an outstanding program. They have a superb coach, and he really knows how to motivate his troops for big games. Super game if you like this kind of game! Too close for our tastes, but it did give us a share of the district lead with Warren Central at 1-0, and Grayson Co falls to 1-1. The Purples have their open date next week, then come back the following week to host Doss, who won their first three games and since have dropped their last three.

Hey jb! Today's players consider Warren Central as BGHS's main rival, especially when they're in the same district. Many of those players are friends off the field and even played with each other in Pee Wee League Football, hence my nickname "The Backyard Brawl". However, our oldest traditional rival is Franklin-Simpson (the big city school v the county school). We've played each other every year at least once since 1944 (they did not meet in 1953). We've played Glasgow 75 times and Big Blue and Owensboro 69 times each.

That would be great, JS! With the Murderer's Row we have facing us starting in the 2nd round through the 5A title game, it is one of the toughest roads by anybody in the postseason for the last five years! I would love for Coach Wallace and the guys to get that brass ring someday...that time may be soon with only 12 seniors this year! It would be great for us to hook up with you, PepRock, rockmom, and others come December. Just ask some of the BGHS faithful where Bulldog is, and you will find me...the wheelchair is a dead giveaway!:lol: Thanx for the props!:thumb:

Great Post, JS! I tell our guys, "Shut up and play football!!" They know I mean it because they're representing themselves, our team, our school, and our community and their parents. They have their slipups, but they know how they're suppoosed to handle it...just that sometimes in extreme emotion, it's going to happen. Like I said, great post!:thumb:
