  1. My girlfriend is leaving town for work next week. My first impulse is to grab the old TV out of storage and set it up next to the new TV so that I can play video games on one and watch sports on the other like I used to when I was in law school. I’m perfectly justified, right?
  2. Out late last night. Woke up after 7, went to the couch and turned on the World Cup. I will remain here for as long as I’m able. Will have to get up at some point as I have early dinner reservations in OTR followed by tickets to La Traviata at Music Hall.
  3. Yeah I'm driving to Cincinnati this afternoon and saw that it's at $3.09. I'll be waiting to get out of town before filling all the way up.
  4. That’s a Sagan-ism isn’t it?
  5. I was fortunate enough to be covering the Seventh Region for this site during what I now know to be the greatest period for this rivalry. Watched Quentin Snider and Kelan Martin. Covered Ray Spalding. This is as good as it gets in Louisville high school basketball.
  6. Trinity vs. Ballard for the 7th Region... it makes my heart soar. Should be a great one.
  7. It’s the third response post and I’m ignoring your ground rules because I want to. The DeSales-Christian Academy Louisville Knights of Ecumenical Inter-Denominational Relations will be a force in 2A ball. Now carry on.
  8. Ask the Seneca RedHawks how happy they are that everyone makes the district tournament. One upset over Waggener and now they’re headed to the Seventh Region tournament for the first time in five years.
  9. Trinity St. Xavier Manual Male Ballard Eastern Waggener Central Fern Creek Southern PRP North Hardin Tates Creek Henry Clay Dunbar I’m pretty sure that’s it for me as high school games go.
  10. Was a battle right up to the final minutes.
  11. Didn’t know much at all about X until this thread. There’s another Kiesler? Their parents must have gone half-broke feeding that family. They’re all giants. If he’s half as good as the others, he’ll be a handful no matter who they’re playing.
  12. Trinity and Ballard played a couple classics out there in recent years. Trinity won 53-52 in the 2013 semifinals only to lose the final the next year in OT, 64-62. Two years after that, Ballard edged the Shamrocks 58-54 in the final. Those years with Quentin Snider, Kelan Martin, James Quick, Ray Spalding, and so many other really fun players were a special time. Looking back through those scores reminds me of how much I enjoyed players like Malik Dow, Craig Owens, and Trey Ivory. I saw a lot of high school hoops during that time and it felt like a high point for the Trinity/Ballard rivalry. Here’s hoping they can meet again this year in the semifinals.
  13. It’s my favorite high school tournament. As said above, a TRUE city championship. I wish it was played a little closer to the rest of the city, but I whine about that every year. The decay of the Gardens really hurt us on that one. Great field this year and should be really fun. Great stuff @Smallhoops.
  14. Schedule is tough. Hoping to go to at least one of the Wednesday evening games if schedule permits. I’ll be leaving town for Christmas on the 22nd unfortunately or I’d love to see more of it. Great event and this field is fantastic.
  15. Four of the C-J preseason top five. Impressive field as always.
  16. Like a smart guy once said: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."
  17. Was it 2013 that Ballard had Quentin Snider and Kelan Martin and lost the title game to Madison Central at the buzzer? That team was solid. You could probably put several Ballard teams over the years on this list.
  18. Craziest thing I never knew about the game until recently, substitution wasn't allowed at all until 1958! Until 60 years ago, if one of your players was hurt, you just played with 10 the rest of the way. It wasn't until 10 years after that that teams could use a sub for tactical, non-injury reasons.
  19. PKs are the flukiest weird thing in soccer. I don't like them as a way of deciding games... but come the playoffs, when you absolutely need a winner... I've yet to come across a better idea for how to ensure someone moves on.
  20. ...Because if everyone played played on Week 0, then it would just be Week 1.
  21. As a coach, it's pretty tough to argue against the level of success Bob Beatty has had in his time. But my favorite will always be Chuck Servino. He was the coach when I started at Trinity and as a teacher and a member of the community, Trinity couldn't have had a better man. He was a great man and better than we or anyone could have ever deserved.
  22. I don't watch SportsCenter but it isn't because of politics, it's because the internet allows me to tailor my viewing experience to the things I'm interested in. "Hey did you want to watch the Chargers/Raiders highlights?" No! Maybe I want baseball, so I can open up my browser and find in-depth Twins coverage with almost no effort. The internet was reshaping ESPN long before any of this stuff blew up and, to my mind, their forays into politics are part of a strategy to keep a market share during down times with original programming. It gave us the politics, sure, but it also gave us 30for30, which was the best original programming to ever come out of ESPN.
  23. As with any company, it's liberal until it isn't. "Gays should be allowed to marry." Yaaaaayyyyy! "IT workers should unionize." You're fired.
