  1. I'll keep the receptacle in a place of honor fitting for my victory in outliving you. Then when I go, we're both getting launched out of a cannon like Hunter Thompson.
  2. I caught Pet Sematary on cable when I was WAY too young. Still gives me the creeps.
  3. Never has being the one seed in the ACC tournament mattered more, considering the dropoff between Louisville, Duke and FSU... and everyone else. Massive advantage in the one-seed that Louisville all but squandered away last week. Still a chance, but they have a long way to go and will likely need a win at FSU to get it.
  4. He just has an incredible motor too. He's the one guy you can count on for intensity in defense and rebounding even if everything else is going wrong.
  5. I'm genuinely glad to see some things that have changed since the Pitino era. There's fresh air in the athletic department and it's really nice as a graduate and a fan. One thing I'm glad hasn't changed: Louisville steamrolling Syracuse. That was quite something. Nwora back on track with 17 points (although 5/18 from the field could use some improvement). The three-point line always matters against that Boeheim zone and Louisville went a perfectly decent 10-24. More importantly was how Mack attacked the zone with Dwayne Sutton at the free throw line and Williams patrolling the baseline. Against the 2-3 zone, the player at the free throw line in the middle of the defense HAS to have a good game. Sutton ended with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Fantastic. In the end, Louisville had 23 assists on 30 made field goals, taking the zone apart and doing really well in transition at times. Back home Saturday against North Carolina. With Duke's loss to NC State, Louisville remains right in the thick of it for the regular season crown.
  6. The Flyers -- now 13-0 in the Atlantic 10 and winners of 15 straight -- pass the first of their late-season tests with a win at VCU in which the Flyers led from the time it was 8-7 and never let the game get level again. The aggressive VCU defense held the Flyers to one of their lowest shooting percentages of the season: 45%. That's well below the average of over 50%. Obi Toppin had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Jalen Crutcher added 18 points that included going 8-8 from the free throw line in the second half to seal it away. Only five games remaining before the A-10 tournament: Duquesne at George Mason Davidson at Rhode Island (circle that one, folks) George Washington
  7. From a soccer and personnel management perspective, he was in over his head from the beginning. BUT He was brought in to get the team into MLS and get a stadium built to justify that investment. Done and done. That's bought him an awful lot of leeway with the guys holding the purse strings.
  8. Second incident. Made some very odd comments about slavery during a team meeting some time ago apparently. I don't know the specifics though.
  9. This team can still string it together, but the years of recruits decommitting and players leaving campus are perfectly evident on this team. We shouldn't be in a position of relying on Fresh Kimble and Ryan McMahon to pull us out of this (as when the Adidas scandal broke, we lost an entire class -- among other things). It just doesn't work on a bad night for the star players on this team. This is a simple rule for Louisville: if Nwora is bad, UofL has a lot to overcome. Two home games this week for the Cardinals to figure out who they want to be the rest of the year.
  10. I don't think we'll see David Johnson start the next game on the bench. After yet another slow start, Louisville finally drops one. It was a perfect circle as well as once Johnson fouled out with Louisville down two and with a possession to tie the game, Fresh Kimble immediately dribbled into traffic and turned the ball over. None of which is to excuse the fact that the preseason Player of the Year, Jordan Nwora, has six total points in two games against Ga. Tech this season. As a team, they shot a pathetic 3-24 from the three-point line, including 1-8 by Ryan McMahon who, when he isn't hitting long-range shots, is just a step above having a traffic cone on the floor. Let's see how they regroup. Instead of strengthening their hold on the league, they've dropped a dumb one and put themselves back in position to lose this lead. At Clemson Saturday. Ugh.
  11. I will always feel that doom is right around the corner for any Dayton basketball team... but I'm really enjoying this Flyers team. They have some rebounding issues (which will ultimately be the reason they lose in the tournament, whatever round that might happen in), but they move the ball beautifully and shoot it really well. They're an absolute pleasure to watch. It's likely I'll never see a UD team this good again in my lifetime. It's a sight to behold. Rhode Island entered the game in second place in the A-10 with a 10-1 conference record. The 11-0 Flyers now have a 2-game cushion on the rest of the league. Obi Toppin had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jalen Crutcher added 21 on 5-7 shooting and 9-9 from the free throw line. Flyers jumped to a ridiculous 17-0 lead in the first five minutes and never looked back. Finished the game 50% from the field as a team, which will actually hurt their NCAA-best season field goal percentage, which was at 52.4% before the game started. Return game up in Kingston, RI, will be March 4. Flyers next game will be a trip to Amherst to take on UMass Saturday afternoon.
  12. Ugh. Hate that this blew up. Normally I hate the Twins trading away prospects but the front office knows how short the window is and that they have a chance to control the Central right out of the gate this year. I hope this goes through without the Twins having to give away the farm system.
  13. HUGE game on Tuesday night as Rhode Island (10-1 A-10) visits Dayton (10-0) for the first of their two meetings this season. A Flyers win would put them two full games clear of the rest of the conference.
  14. I’m thrilled about the win, but there were some big flaws here defensively.
  15. The big thing that could doom Louisville in this one is sleepwalking on defense for a half like they did on Wednesday. This Virginia team is low-scoring even by Virginia standards. If Louisville can keep their points down, the Cards should be able to put enough on the board to pull through. Louisville 64 Virginia 58
  16. Trinity had some pretty solid cafeteria food back in the day. I was a brown-bag-lunch kind of kid, but I made a point of checking out the lines when it was chicken patty sandwich day or chalupas.
  17. I'm hoping a couple things go right that can make this a really fun league. The first is the coaching staff of the Dallas Renegades. Head Coach Bob Stoops hired Hal Mumme to be the OC. Man that could be fun if things break right. Some great college players on a lot of these teams, and I'm especially looking at the DC team that features Buffalo's Tyree Jackson and Ohio State's Cardale Jones at QB and the NCAA's all-time leader in yardage in San Diego State's Donnel Pumphrey. I'd love for some of those guys to get another shot at the NFL out of this. I'm glad they're still trying to make another football league work. With the big networks behind it, I think this has a much better shot than the AAF did last year, which was a disaster from the get-go.
  18. Flyers went up 36-17 at halftime and put on the cruise control. Lots of minutes for bench players. Obi Toppin’s backup, Jordy Tshimanga, played over 10 minutes, the most he’s had this year. Man is he rough. Big drop off there.Fordham... it’s never been easy for the Rams in the A-10. They’re just not good.
  19. Did I just see on Twitter that someone was ejected from this game for biting?
  20. Rocky first 10 minutes that featured 10 turnovers and 8 fouls by the Cardinals. Got themselves together after that. NC State got within 4 in the second half but the Cards burned back ahead. David Johnson again looked great. Nice to start the long slog of February with a win. Lots and lots of land mines ahead in this part of the season.
  21. So far this is just every Indiana team for 25 years. They win big games at Assembly Hall but drop perfectly winnable games on the road. And they've been absolutely blown out away from home a few times already this year. After another huge home contest against Maryland on Sunday, they hit the road for games at Penn State and at Ohio State. That'll be a big test for where this team is.
