If a QB can’t read basic high school defensive coverages, and know if a defense gives us this certain look then we are running this play, and against another certain look we are checking to the 2nd call in the huddle, then they aren’t very well coached. Most high school defenses are running some version of cover 3, Cover 2, and some type of man to man. Not real complex stuff, I’d say the really good teams have a QB competent enough to be able to read basic defensive coverages. Now, if a team is strictly putting their best athlete back there, and making him pretty much an extra running back, then yes, they probably aren’t asked to read much of anything.

While I agree with you, that if you can avoid having your QB play defense, you definitely should, I don’t agree that you can put just about any good athlete at QB in today’s game. Maybe in Dixie’s 4 play, one wide receiver routes, hurry up system, you can get by with that, but today’s game is much more complex than the old days of everyone had 2-3 running backs in the back field and rarely threw the ball. I’d say a lot of teams allow their QBs to make checks within their scheme and to read coverage in the passing game. I think most teams would definitely not want to have their QB play defense, sometimes you don’t have any choice if you want to win.

My point is, when you are hurt and not playing, you get forgotten about. The medical staff and trainers and the kid himself, did an amazing job at being able to come back and finish the season. He was put on a pitch count and offense only his first 2 games back. In the semis the Tigers took the wraps off of him and unleashed him.

Tyler Fryman, Beechwood. The kid is an absolute freak on both sides of the football. Elite speed, smooth as butter, and never drops a pass. He got hurt in week 2 and missed the next 9 games of the season, and therefore kind of fell off the radar. However, when he came back in the 2nd round of the playoffs, he elevated Beechwood, from a very good team, to a great team, and it was lights out for the rest of 2A, as evidenced by the beatdowns of LCA and Owensboro Catholic in route to the 2A state championship! His presence alone, opened up things for other players, because teams had to account for him.

2009 Paducah Tilghman was 4-6 in the regular season, and won the 3A state title.

They played in 2022.

Burch had a great 2 seasons as the QB, but those 4,652 yards need to be cut in half. When the migration occurred from Riherds to Arbiter, some things got screwed up in the 2016 and 2015 seasons. You need to go back and look at game by game stats for correct stats. Burch had about half of that, which was still a very good season, but 4,652 would be off the charts.

Yep, but beggars can’t be choosers when making the schedule. Trying to find games that make sense for the Tigers, isn’t easy to do. I don’t think they will be playing any out of state teams for quite a while, and that’s a shame, because that game against McNick was a great environment and really good game to start the season.

If you think it was bad at Highlands .... the way things were at Beechwood would make your head spin. Amazing how one person can destroy things so quickly.

I am interested to know why you think a young guy is the right answer here? My thought .. SK basically has everything in place for them to become a powerhouse. They will continue to get solid athletes (still plenty of places to build nice, new homes). Yet still has some farmboys around who can man the trenches. Open enrollment ... I just feel like an experienced winner has a better chance negotiating the situation VS a guy. I could be wrong ... but wouldn't it make more sense to go all out for an experienced winning who has a proven track record of getting solid programs to the next level? This job needs a defensive minded coach who has experience dealing with the parents who lack understanding of WE VS ME. Someone with name recognition who immediately commands (and demands) respect. A guy that the kids immediately buy into based on a history of being successful. Ideally that would be a person who has been a head coach in the past but it could be an assistant who has similar experience. I can never figure out why schools don't dig into the coaching staffs at places like Highlands, Beechwood, Cov Cath and successful programs across the river. I am sure some schools and school systems really try to find the right guys ... but a lot more of them tend to only look into people who apply or someone a buddy may already know. System-wise ... they have had a solid offense. The changes need to occur on the defensive side of the ball. The offense can be easily tweaked .... and still run smoothly. Massive changes are not needed there. I think if they truly evaluate where things stand with the program and high a coach who knows how to run a program and understand that defense wins championships ... this could be an immediate, big time winner. With that said ... I don't necessarily disagree that a "young guy that can bring some energy ..." is the best option ... I guess I am interested in hearing about why you feel this way.

I don't think one person will argue your in game points. It happens and it will continue to happen. I think most times kids get over it at the end of the game .. shake hands and move forward and generally handle things pretty well with very few exceptions. With that said ... where things got interesting are when the head coach and star player decided on Tuesday of state championship week that they were going to make statements on the radio that were either misguided gamesmanship or something else. Let's not pretend that this is the only time when the team in question has went out of their way to insult their opponents BEFORE they played. It is who they are. So ... everyone can try to redirect what the issue really was but the fact of the matter is this ... when you play a team that has won 6 out of the last 8 state championships in their class (now 7 out of 9) don't throw statements around to intentionally insult the team in question. Say that to your team or teammates ... and not in public. Did they really think Beechwood players were not football players? If so ... then they made their bed ... have fun sleeping in it. Its just like 2021 .. Beechwood came into the game 14-0 ... had given up 86 points all year to that point ... yet the opponent decides its better to call them out in public and insult them instead of not poking the bear. Great idea ... that stuff rarely works when it comes down to 2 really talented teams. Its really important that we not recreate a narrative that omits the truth. Both teams on the field understand what happens between the lines. Trying to paint one team as just as guilty following those Tuesday comments is comical. I am proud of our coaches and players ... its obvious that they have been there before and they acted like it.

Can any of the Franklin County fans speak to the "RPO BOYZ" uniforms? I am sure someone has explained it before ... but I must have missed it. I know what an RPO is ... surprised to see it on a uniform like that.

Under dog? How is the unbeaten (until yesterday) #1 team all season in AA the underdog exactly? Quite a few football "experts" bailed on Beechwood after the Covington Catholic game. Not understanding the reverse psychology on that one. By the sound of OC and their "interesting" statements all week ... It is pretty much a dead certainty that OC never thought of their selves as the under dog.

Last year they took shots at Beechwood saying OC had the “Beechwood path to the finals” and this year they take a jab, downplaying their overall talent. OC better figure it out and keep it closed or they will forever be left holding the bouquet.

Hergott and Berger both have 13 rings. Hergott 4 as a player and 9 as a coach. Berger 2 as a player and 11 as a coach. Both of them will be in their 17th state title game on Friday.
