August of 2024, Hunter Cantwell sent a text regarding his All State Safety, who was going to be his QB for fall of 2024. That question became a Tough Topic. For CAL, the answer turned out to be yes and Connor Hodge had a great season on both sides of the ball, all the way to a state title.

What do you think? Should the QB play defense?

  • Also everyone, remember Greg Hergott at Beechwood playing QB/LB for three years.  Man among boys for sure.

  • What if your QB has no shot of playing college football as a QB but has legit shot of playing college football on defense.  With no film on defense could cost the kid a chance of playing college footb

  • In 1998 JT Haskins (current Bryan Station HC) took the Bryan Station Defenders to the 4A state finals as the starting QB/DB, he then went on to play DB at U of L.

CovCath QB Cash Harney is doing a great job playing both ways.

I remember along time ago back in the 90s SK had a QB Wanye Neubauer he was probably one of the biggest on the field at  linebacker 6'1 200 pounds. They definitely needed him on defense.

In the small schools it used to be the QB would play safety if they were athletic enough. Didn't Brandon Smith QB and LB? If I was the coach and my QB was better on defense than the next guy, we would be having that conversation especially if the next guy up couldn't do the job.

This year at OHS we will have to have Ty Ashley or Eli Hampton be our QB. We don't really have any other choice.

I would say no to starting QB playing defense, but I'm all for the backup playing another position. Most teams the backup QB is one of the better players on the team and you should allow him to play another position on the field instead of him just standing on the sideline come Friday nights just because he is the backup.

I don't think I've ever seen any of the big 6A teams do this but I could definitely see it at schools that don't have big numbers.

So getting players ready for the next level is more important than having your QB healthy for the entire season? Sell that one to moms, dads, and the rest of the fans.

I remember Male bringing Michael Bush in to play defense too when Male couldn't stop Trinity.  And for anyone that wants to feel old today, Michael Warren Bush Jr. is 40 years old. ??

Also, from Wikipedia:

Bush attended Louisville Male High School where he played quarterback his senior year after seeing action at defensive back, defensive end, linebacker, running back, safety, and wide receiver over his career. As a senior, he led the Bulldogs to the state championship game in Kentucky's highest class. In that showdown against future Louisville teammate Brian Brohm and the Trinity High School Shamrocks, Bush threw for 468 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 116 yards and another touchdown in a 59–56 loss. He also caught two passes for 24 yards, returned a punt and a kickoff, and made five tackles on defense.

Didn't Wera play QB and DE?

Mayfield had it's All State QB (David Fowler) play defensive back for them back in the early 1970's and against Madisonville in the playoff's he tore his knee up in that game. That was the last a QB played defense for Mayfield. Not saying if the right situation and right player ever came along it couldn't happen.

Definitely rare in the upper levels of 6A but I could see a guy like Michael Bush for sure playing both ways.
