I got a little bit starry-eyed about CAL's chances against Simon Kenton, but I think they handle Eastern fairly easily. CAL 35-10.

Through a Varsity, JV & Freshman scrimmage, one varsity game and one JV game, DeSales has not been scored on. That will end Friday, but I don't expect Butler to put more than one score on the board. However, I think our offense is still a work in progress. I'm taking the Colts 13-7. Here's a picture of the opening night crowd.

I'm very curious to see how Danville fares this week. Meanwhile, DeSales' JV team just dismantled Butler (it was 34-0 in the 3rd quarter when I left), but the varisty game against 6-A Butler concerns me.

Meade looked pretty unimpressive in the scrimmage against DeSales, especially on offense. Their defense actually looked pretty good against the Colts, but this definitely isn't an elite Meade County team.

It was quite a night....there was a LOT of pomp and circumstance before the game, but the Colts handled the distractions well. They scored on their first four possessions, and led 23-0 at halftime. The second half was...well...bad. A Fairdale player suffered a neck injury and the game was delayed 25 minutes while waiting for the ambulance. I have heard that the young man is okay and I hope that is the case. Then, in the 4th quarter, the lights went out in the brand new stadium. It turns out someone forgot to turn the 10:00 timer off. OOPS! Another 20-minute delay. That being said, the Colts were good on offense and dominant on defense. Thy had 21 first downs to only 3 for Fairdale. The Bulldogs managed only 41 yards of total offense and DeSales' highly touted secondary picked off two passes.

The Colts officially open the new stadium tonight against Fairdale. While the distractions are many (the Louisville media has been on campus ALL WEEK), I expect the Colts to christen the new stadium with a victory. Thoughts?

This is true - I heard it from a Manual Freshman Dad. Manual has a tougher road than most with the 6-A classification. They have the YPAS (Youth Performing Arts School) program, and many kids go there JUST for that. Unfortunately for football, those kids are counted in the enrollment even though YPAS is almost an entirely separate entity.

QB is only a sophomore, but is a big kid with a big arm. He put up nice numbers as a Freshman. TE/DE Paulson is a beast. 6'4" or 6'5" and solid. Div I prospect. He may have already signed but I can't remember. To me, their best player is Milton Wright. 6'2" 185 (approx), lightning fast. WR and DB. He had a 100-yd INT return for a TD, a TD catch, AND a kickoff return TD against DeSales last year (the KO return was called back but it was still electric). Those guys are surrounded by solid players and they run a pro-style offense. Size up front and depth would be the two big concerns against a team like SK.

Two of CAL's best weapons were freshmen last year. As sophomores, I would look for them to step up in a big way - especially Wright. He is lights out. I agree with your top five, even the order. DeSales fits nicely into that #3 spot. They have a lot to replace, but man oh man are they bringing the speed and athleticism this year! They are young, but they could be very dangerous by the end of the season.

They do appear to have some work to do, particularly on offense. However, to your point I remember a similar outcome in a scrimmage between these two teams a couple of years ago. By the end of that season, Meade was in the 6-A championship game. Better to be good at the end of the season than in a scrimmage.

The varsity only played two quarters, and the 14-0 is the varsity score. The Colts looked really good on defense - speed EVERYWHERE. Meade Co was limited to two first downs and only got across midfield once. DeSales used all three QBs, although Recktenwald and the sophomore Pfaadt got most of the snaps. Both looked good as the Colts opened up the offense, passing on 5 of the first 7 plays and splitting about 50/50 pass/run the rest of the way. It was an entirely different look.

I totally agree about Meade County. I missed the 7-on-7 but I heard several DeSales folks talking about how good Meade looked at the skill positions. This should be a real test for both teams this evening. When you say 30 returning juniors, do you mean 30 guys that are juniors THIS year or 30 that are now seniors?

Coach Marksbury is a pure football guy as well as a great advocate for his program. The people are behind him 100% and he is doing great things there. I agree with Ed, no one player is going to replace Holbrook, but the cupboard is far from empty.

Sorry Pick...Lord knows I saw enough of Bright last November, but Wright is different. he's probably 6'1' or 6'2", solid build, and can absolutely fly. And that was as a Freshman!

No doubt. He's electric. I've seen most of the top players on this list except Henderson. Given that caveat, I agree 100% that he's the best player in 2-A. If he stays healthy, he will be receiving offers from elite schools, if he hasn't already.

Well written article! Just curious about the omission of Milton Wright. He was outstanding as a freshman last year. Is he still at CAL?

Stick it to the Tennessee guys!!! I'll give the Mayfield fan base this, they have street cred with me. Practically everything they said would happen last year happened. It sounded like bluster, but it was entirely accurate. As they say, "it ain't braggin' if you can back it up!"
