Jo-Jo13 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Me being a Manual grad I find this startling. I heard from a very reliable source that Manual has canceled it's freshman season due to extremely low numbers. Has anyone else heard this?
BigVMan23 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Wow, if true that's amazing considering that size of school.
That One Guy Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 A 6A school with a deep history and rich tradition of football cancelling a freshman season is alarming. Is Manual's incoming freshman class lower than usual this year?
plantmanky Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Two of the feeder (well for JCPS anyways) schools failed to field MS teams last year, so Im not surprised by this.
Purple88 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 This does not surprise me in this day and age. Manual is a school that the "majority" of kids go there for academics first. Manual just had a coaching change. In the past, the coach was responsible and good at making sure football players were "at least considering Manual" and then working with administration on "helping" them get in. It is NOT easy to get into Manual. SO, if the former coach stopped this practice (which he did), it will take Coach Carmony at least a season to overcome this shortfall. Plenty can come onboard for academics AND football, but the coach is needed to set that table. Check back next year and that will tell you more than this.

plantmanky Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Plant, why do you think that is? More kids playing other sports; parents scared of concussions, other??? Honestly two things play part in this IMO. 1. Both of those feeders were, not the greatest in a sense. I remember one of them back in 2013 I think it was, had to cancel the rest of their season because 3/4 of the team ended up grade ineligible. So im sure if they cant make the grade at the feeder school, getting into manual might be a huge challenge. 2. JCPS (and any BGPer inside JCPS that can elaborate more on this please do) is in the process of changing things around at the middle school level. A few schools have been closed and consolidated with other middle schools, several have combined and taken over old HS buildings. Some of this facilities related, some educationally related. IMO those changes have left some holes in the feeder map for JCPS that isnt helping either in the short term. The situation isnt the best, but one thing I have learned about the JCPS coaches is they all tend to help each other when pinches like this come about, so Id say they get some fresh more games schedule and in the end all will work out. Things like this happen at big schools sometimes, I mean Simon Kenton pulled up a decent amount of 8th graders this year to their freshman team.

I wont throw Carmony under the bus for this, as I think he may have been instructed to pause this for the moment.

Plant, my comments weren't to throw him under the bus and if they are implied then that is clearly not my intentions. Only to say that he didn't have adequate time to "build" a new freshman squad when the process was too far ahead of him for this season. I think Coach Carmony is a great hire and I wish him the best of luck. FWIW, my daughter goes to Manual and clearly want the best for them.

IMO those changes have left some holes in the feeder map for JCPS that isnt helping either in the short term. IMO I don't think this has anything to do with Manual. The Crimsons fielded a team of 20+ Freshmen the past few seasons. Former coach Dr. Lucas was vocal about not getting that many players in the program. This could be blamed on a number of reasons, partially academics and partially kids wanting to go elsewhere. I know for a fact when Manual was on a roll beating rival Male they were not having a problem getting kids. Being a district wide magnet, if a kid puts DuPont Manual as their number one, the administration gets the pick of the litter. No other school in JCPS can offer this with added transportation. I wonder how the teams scheduled to play will fill out their schedules.
Toothpick Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Not that big of a deal, the frosh that want to play will simply play jv. This maybe a good thing as it will cut out a little cost to the school and there should be no effect on the quality of the football programs preformance
Old-School-Football Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Agreed...Freshman was an issue with Lucas the past few years. Just low numbers. Give it some time, Carmony will have the Crimsons playing solid football at all levels. And rest easy, academics will remain a priority.

I'm a solution-oriented guy.
