  1. I'm sure there is someone here who could give out some numbers around starting a program. What would the low end be and what would the high end amount be?
  2. I believe it was around that number, for sure.
  3. So, what's holding them back in football?
  4. Or is it simply the fact that older guys have simply put in enough time on all levels that they tend to be able to land in better jobs? Not saying Saban (for example) is a bad coach, but Alabama wouldn't be taking a shot on a PJ Fleck type guy. I think the age thing is more of an issue when it comes to guys who are out of touch, and refuse to break from what they did 25 years ago. I've known of older guys who are still able to field good teams and do good things, but don't exactly know how to handle or relate to the young players they have. They don't connect to them and ultimately don't know how to connect with them. For some teams, that isn't really needed. For some, it is.
  5. They should have listened to me. Everybody would have been happy with Stallionitas.
  6. I thought they did eliminate the 5 yard penalty a year or two ago? Am I just crazy?
  7. So, what are the enrollment details and everything like that? Is their first season Fall 17 or 18?
  8. I've got fingers crossed for the Stallionettes! Or the Stallionitas!
  9. I personally don't think anything goes with green. But, isn't green and gold/yellow the colors at Brian Station?
  10. A 50 yard PI that only gives out 15 yards is probably too much of an impact, too, right? I'm fine with it being a spot foul.
  11. I'm going to bend the rules a little bit here, and have two different things. One rule I would like to see enforced better: 1. I think there needs to be a better enforcement of returning kickoffs out of the endzone. By rule, you can't. I've seen players catch it a yard in and return it. I've seen players catch it right on the goal line and not be able to return it. I've seen players catch it at the 1, step into the endzone and return it. I've seen players catch it at the 1, step into the endzone and not be able to return it. I'm fine with the rule, I just want to get a more consistent enforcement. One thing I would like to see changed: 1. I think the taunting/celebrating and similar rules need to be different and better. I've seen kids get a flag for standing over a player they just tackled, and then see the exact same thing the next week with no flag and just a "come on, guy" type thing from the official. I don't know what exactly officials are trained to look for with these types of flags, but there have been times I've seen things that I felt should have been a flag, not get flagged. I've seen a player flip the ball to an opposing coach, and not get flagged for it (seen that happen in the NFL, and he definitely got flagged for it.) I think emotions are a huge part of the game, and are a great part of the experience for players, coaches and fans. But, if we're going to put an emphasis on on-field behavior and antics, it has to be more consistent. Again, I kind of bent the rules, so that's on me. My bad.
  12. I would say start the season one week sooner, and have teams with a second open week. I think a lot of players and coaches would benefit from that second free week to get healthy and rested.
  13. He was a pretty good guitar player in the Back to the Future movie. Spin City was pretty funny, too.
  14. Something I haven't seen mentioned would be the fact that there are a few elite teams at the top of every class who are always going to be brutal to play. For the "have not" teams in the state, they're looking at getting everything on their end to go perfectly, a few things to go wrong at the top, and then to get really lucky. I don't buy that simply having a great QB and a decent coach wins you games. You could take an amazing high level QB, and if his line can't block and his skill players make something happen, you're not going to win in November. A vast majority of teams in this state aren't straight up competing for a state championship. They're competing for a district championship, area bragging rights, and a regional championship. I was talking with a friend about this earlier, and one thing I would love to see would be the last 10 years worth of pre-season rankings. And I'd love to see where the 2 state finals tears in every class started the season. How many would have started the year outside the top 5? Have any started outside the top 10? If you went back to the 4 class system, you would have such a concentration of power at the top, that I would say there would only be about 20 teams who could be in the discussions annually, from all classes combined. Each class in Kentucky is pretty much like women's college basketball. If you aren't Uconn or Tennessee, you're probably not getting it done.
  15. No. And the same could be said for about 40 teams in the state. There might be a regional championship appearance every 15 years, but that is a really high ceiling for most places. And if you went from 6 classes down to 5, I'd add 10-15 teams to that "never" list. Go down to 4 classes, add 10-15 more teams again. High school football in this state is almost always a foregone conclusion every year. There's always 1 or 2 teams who surprise, but generally we all know what's coming.
  16. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the district standing will be the same next year. Maybe not the records, but I think every district plays out the same way.
  17. If you go to that Brand Store in BG, Spalding products are sold there. Along with Russell and Brooks.
  18. If the games are moved, who would the logical sponsors be?
  19. It's not as much as I would have expected, especially with the increase in the "modern" offense thinking. To me, it looked like the additional classes didn't really impact the smaller classes, but the larger classes seem to be less competitive. But, that could also just be because the last few years have had some monster teams.
  20. I was doing a little bit of research about the overall state finals results. I'm going to reserve my opinion (and what little weight it carries) but here are the pure numbers for the 10 years of 6 classes, and 9 years previous of 4 classes. 6 Class System 6A Avg. Margin of Victory: 31.3 Largest Margin: 54 in 2012 Smallest Margin: 7 in 2013 5A Avg. Margin of Victory: 28.9 Largest Margin: 52 in 2011 Smallest Margin: 7 in 2014 4A Avg. Margin of Victory: 21.7 Largest Margin: 48 in 2016 Smallest Margin: 3 in 2013 3A Avg. Margin of Victory: 17.2 Largest Margin: 43 in 2015 Smallest Margin: 1 in 2011 2A Avg. Margin of Victory: 16.4 Largest Margin: 42 in 2010 Smallest Margin: 4 in 2012 1A Avg. Margin of Victory: 21.6 Largest Margin: 47 in 2012 Smallest Margin: 1 in 2014 9 Years of 4 Class System 4A Avg. Margin of Victory: 17.9 Largest Margin: 40 in 2004 Smallest Margin: 3 in 1999, 2002, 2003 3A Avg. Margin of Victory: 27.9 Largest Margin: 49 in 1998 Smallest Margin: 11 in 2002 2A Avg. Margin of Victory: 19.6 Largest Margin: 51 in 2002 Smallest Margin: 3 in 2006 1A Avg. Margin of Victory: 17.2 Largest Margin: 35 in 2003, 2005 Smallest Margin: 1 in 2001 Again, I'm not making a statement about either system or the current games or anything like that. But, these are some numbers that I thought were interesting. I just think stuff like that is interesting. And I've got some more stuff if anyone is interested.
  21. Why can they not guarantee locker room space? Is it an issue with the WKU equipment and the stuff for the visiting team? If I had made it that far, and we were cramped in a hall way, I'd just keep them out on the field.
  22. Your best player is used to win games, after the game is won they aren't needed any more. It's kind of like having the middle rotation guy in baseball, once it's out of hand then you send him in and let him do his thing. It's like letting those 9-12 guys on the basketball bench in the game. I think the Bear Bryant quote is the best philosophy, especially when it comes to high school athletics. It's not about making a point, and to an extent it's not about perfecting whatever you feel you need to work on. It's fine to keep everybody in for as long as you want. It's fine to run whatever you want. But, if someone is consistently putting up running clocks on people, is there really that much that needs to be worked on? And on the flip side, if you're putting that running clock on someone, are they really going to be good enough to give you a good look at anything? If they couldn't give you a game, then they probably can't give you enough of a good look to get a good feel for anything, can they? One thing I think that hasn't been mentioned is there are plenty of guys who will use the running clock time to give a guy some touches who maybe didn't have anything yet or hadn't quite gotten there. It doesn't mean anything, but it is at least something for that kid to hang his hat on. I've seen plenty of times when a team gets to 36, and when they get close the coach will try his best to make sure that a certain player gets more shots to get in the EZ. I once saw a guy up by 50+ throw to a kid and score, and the other team got pretty upset but after the game the coach let the other guy know that he was a kid with a pretty rough home life and had bounced around foster care. Took a little bit of the sting out of it. There are also teams who refuse to take out their starters just to prove how good they are. Nobody gets hurt, and it doesn't cost them anything that year. They put up huge numbers and have a great season. Then, the next year after everyone has graduated, you're trotting out guys who barely saw any sort of real action on a Friday night. And you can talk about "that's what JV games are for" all you want, but the difference between those JV games in the evening with whomever you can get are just a little bit different than that cross-town rival under the lights on Friday. Game speed is just a little bit different. Everything operates on a little bit of a different level at that point. For me, it would have been nice to have had him experience that as often as he could, even if it was mop-up duty last season.
  23. Here are some numbers for anyone who might find them interesting: The distance from every team playing in the finals to the stadiums at WKU, UofL and UK. Beechwood 203 to WKU 79 to UK 98 to UofL Hazard 206 to WKU 115 to UK 188 to UofL Danville 133 to WKU 33 to UK 84 to UofL CAL 116 to WKU 73 to UK 0 to UofL Central 114 to WKU 80 to UK 0 to UofL Belfry 284 to WKU 163 to UK 232 to UofL Franklin Simpson 21 to WKU 173 to UK 131 to UofL Johnson Central 263 to WKU 116 to UK 187 to UofL Bowling Green 0 to WKU 154 to UK 113 to UofL Pulaski County 112 to WKU 78 to UK 124 to UofL Trinity 117 to WKU 74 to UK 0 to UofL Lafayette 152 to WKU 0 to UK 81 to UofL I simply put any schools mileage as zero if it was in the same city, because I didn't feel there was any real travel issues for them. I know they would obviously still have to get there, but the time and logistics of going a few blocks away is vastly different compared to getting across the state. EDIT: The average mileage to each location is: 143 miles to WKU. 94 miles to UK. 103 miles to UofL And something else worth considering would be that a team like Mayfield doesn't figure to be out of the championship picture for long, so some of those numbers would obviously have a decently good sized change on a year to year basis.
