Can a team like Jenkins ever compete for a state title?

Featured Replies

I use Jenkins only as an example.

But can a small team that seems to have a roster of home grown compete, with other schools in their class, for a state title?

What would it take for a school like that to start the uphill climb?

I say stable coaching staff

An all out blitz by staff and current players to try and build the roster

Major weight time for all players

Big time film study time

I also firmly believe team unity.(Maybe to fund raiser as a team along with other team activities)

Players have to 100% believe in the systems on offense and defense the staff

puts in place.

Plus, you need a consistent youth development program that is mirroring the HS program in all aspects with great support from the community.

It'll never happen. You could write them a $10,000,000 dollar check to get whatever they wanted in terms of facilities and equipment, but unless they have more talent they'll never make it.

Every team has a ceiling. Most aren't, and never will be, state championship contenders.

No and there are a lot of teams that I can say no for too.

We agree.

Much easier in basketball, volleyball. Too many players on a football team for ncf's scenario.

Never is a mighty long time. Practically speaking, probably not in my lifetime.

This is not as important as many think. It's not needed. It is needed for football to be important and the players on the lower levels have positive experiences. It is not necessary for the lower levels to mirror the HS.

Jenkins has had football success in the 50's-70's.

A couple of regional championships. A couple of wins vs Belfry and Pikeville and Elkhorn City and Lynch. It's economics and politics that contribute to that program ceiling.

No.

And the same could be said for about 40 teams in the state.

There might be a regional championship appearance every 15 years, but that is a really high ceiling for most places.

And if you went from 6 classes down to 5, I'd add 10-15 teams to that "never" list. Go down to 4 classes, add 10-15 more teams again.

High school football in this state is almost always a foregone conclusion every year. There's always 1 or 2 teams who surprise, but generally we all know what's coming.

No.

1st Bold- Probably more than that.

No.

Could Burgin ever win the Sweet 16 in Basketball?

Could they? Yep, they COULD...and it's much much easier to see in basketball. How could it happen?

Some transfer trickles in from out of state, turns out to be a darn good ball player. Maybe at the same time a foreign exchange student who just happens to be a 6'8 stud ball player shows up from X country. Couple of up and comers in the county see this and suddenly instead of being at Mercer County they are now at Burgin. Add in the 3 or 4 role players from Burgin who give everything for God, Country and Burgin basketball and now actually have a chance to get to the state tournament and bam, instant contender. Hey, it COULD happen.
