Jenkins has had football success in the 50's-70's.

 

A couple of regional championships. A couple of wins vs Belfry and Pikeville and Elkhorn City and Lynch. It's economics and politics that contribute to that program ceiling.

Jenkins would need to get an elite coach, a new feeder system, a massive increase in money to completely upgrade their strength and conditioning program, sustain success for long enough that parents will choose to send their kids there instead of Letcher Central, The Virginia HS and Shelby Valley, and then they would need for all of it to come together and have a little luck as well to win five playoff games

So much has changed in Kentucky that it would be very hard to compete for a title. Unless some commerce returns to the rural areas I think we are going to see alot of Jenkins-like schools being consolidated with larger schools.

Every program can grow and build, but every program is different.

 

I truly believe that ANY program CAN succeed at the highest level.. it just takes a Next level type of competitiveness and the work ethic to get to that level. Yes it's cliche but it is very possible.

 

Also another thing people don't look at.. sometimes to be successful you have to work outside the box. Get creative, change the game, do something different

Something I haven't seen mentioned would be the fact that there are a few elite teams at the top of every class who are always going to be brutal to play.

 

For the "have not" teams in the state, they're looking at getting everything on their end to go perfectly, a few things to go wrong at the top, and then to get really lucky.

 

I don't buy that simply having a great QB and a decent coach wins you games. You could take an amazing high level QB, and if his line can't block and his skill players make something happen, you're not going to win in November.

 

A vast majority of teams in this state aren't straight up competing for a state championship. They're competing for a district championship, area bragging rights, and a regional championship.

 

 

I was talking with a friend about this earlier, and one thing I would love to see would be the last 10 years worth of pre-season rankings. And I'd love to see where the 2 state finals tears in every class started the season.

 

How many would have started the year outside the top 5? Have any started outside the top 10?

 

If you went back to the 4 class system, you would have such a concentration of power at the top, that I would say there would only be about 20 teams who could be in the discussions annually, from all classes combined.

 

Each class in Kentucky is pretty much like women's college basketball. If you aren't Uconn or Tennessee, you're probably not getting it done.

I say it's possible. Look no further than Paintsville just a few years ago. They were cellar dwellers in 1-A East (all due respect), and with a fine HC and staff that a lot of larger schools would love to have, along with great community support, look where they brought it to. Just one win away from an appearance in BG. So yes, I would never say never.

This is not as important as many think. It's not needed. It is needed for football to be important and the players on the lower levels have positive experiences. It is not necessary for the lower levels to mirror the HS.

 

I would think it's more important at the small school level than the bigger schools. The better the fundamentals and familiarity with the program, the more consistent the kids play.

1A this hold true for sure, 2A you've still got some chance with just that. 3A and above you've got to have more than that. You need a decent O & D line and 2-3 studs in the skill positions who can do it on both sides of the ball.
